Introduction
The age of technology makes it easy to explore various innovations that can solve many
issues that exist in society. Waste management is one of the significant problems that different
cities across the globe try to solve. This paper explores the modern ways of managing wastes and
monitoring the relevant procedures involved. Through these innovations, local governments do
not have to employ plastic containers to collect garbage but instead use an automatic system that
assists in management and monitoring. Besides creating a more efficient way of managing
wastes, the system can also enhance the creation of an eco-friendly environment.
Concept Description and Literature Review
Pollution is harmful to the environment as it leads to contamination and disorder. Waste
management involves the collection, monitoring, and disposal of waste materials from factories,
industries, and droppings from individuals. Through the use of the Internet of Things (IoT) and
IR sensors, a device can be constructed that helps in automatic waste management and
segregation to create a smart city. Cleanliness promotes healthy living, and this project aims to
minimize improper waste disposal. In many parts of the country, garbage bins are loaded with
solid waste, and this compromises hygiene. Bad smell becomes rampant in towns, and
contagious diseases spread quickly. Automatic waste management and segregation device can
eliminate all these limitations. Instead of the conventional plastic bins, the system herein uses a
method that allows wastes to be thrown into a pipe, and the IR sensory system allows an almost
immediate detection and notification to the relevant personnel. The system works concurrently
with the traditional garbage bins. The collectors get the report when the garbage reaches a certain
percentage.

To understand the concept better, and to help in the assembly of the device and the
algorithm that will help in the notification processes, a review of different studies is essential.
The system also has merits and demerits that may require analysis and assessment before
investing in it. Various scientists have invented multiple systems that separate waste. Some
include- Smart Garbage Monitoring System (uses an algorithm created through the IoT)
(Chaware et al., 2017); and the Automatic Waste Segregation System (WSS) that uses machine
and Image Processing (Dev, 2018). Even though there is evidence of attempts to use technology
to solve the issue of waste management. The existing systems seem to depend on the computer
systems without major mechanical components entirely. The WSS is a prototype automatically
collects garbage, receives incoming wastes with the aid of the processor, and then does the
segregation using a machine learning algorithm. The proposed Automatic Waste Segregator is a
mechanical system which uses an impedance sensing mechanism to pick metallic wastes,
differentiates between wet and dry residues using capacitance-dependent sensors
Concept Analysis
In contemporary society, many nations strive to gain an economic edge over others to
attract investors. Many companies invest in places that are environmentally friendly since it
through this that their employees would be assured of safety regarding health matters. An
automatic waste management system enables such countries that appreciate attracting more
investors hence more revenue as opposed to those who have stuck to the traditional waste
management systems. Studies have indicated that countries that embrace new automated waste
management mechanisms like the AWS gain a better position in the world market. The
sustainability of such economic advantages entirely depends on the maintenance of the system.
In this case, the regular management of the systems would be the responsibility of the

municipality, with all the systems connected to a centralized server via a computer network
(Rajaeian & Lane, 2017). The devices would be distributed in towns at strategic places for easy
supervision. Also, sensitization of the society would be appropriate so that they can appreciate
the importance of the innovation. The management team should also consist of a scientist who
will be conducting regular research to keep the system up to date with the emerging
technologies.
Different countries have their ways of doing things, and some projects cannot be
implemented due to government policies governing various aspects of the economy. The
assumption in the automatic waste management and monitoring project is that the government
policies do not prohibit its use (Turekulova et al., 2019). Also, I assume that the competition in
the production line is not stiff enough to hinder the testing and final implementation of the
project. The risk in the current plan is that investment plans of the country do not seem to favor
Research and Development, thereby hindering the innovation scales. In addressing the challenge,
the project aims to use the locally available resource at the initial stages to implement models
that can then help in securing funds for development (Tsai & Oda, 2018).
Skills and Team
Waste management is probably one of the most critical tasks within an organization. Automatic
management devices are very innovative and require several skills to construct and implement
(Rajaeian & Lane, 2017). For this particular project, the team will consist of individuals who will
be engaged at various stages of development. At the planning level, the team will have a
scientific researcher with a background in mechanical engineering. The person will be
responsible for conducting studies on the viability of the device, availability of resources, and the
necessary certifications and regulations governing the use of the final product. The team will also

have a finance officer, with a background in accounting and budgeting, to assist with the
formulation of the necessary budgets. Most importantly, the project will require mechanical
engineers to help in the design of the devices, construction, and placement at the right places.
Since the management plan includes automated notification, computing skills will be necessary,
and this is why a computer scientist will have to join the team. The expertise of computing will
help in formulating an algorithm to enhance notification and reporting. Every member of the
team will be assigned roles, with high expectations on the delivery of the expected outcomes at
every stage.
Conclusion
In conclusion, science continues to revolutionize the world. Technological advancement
is at its peak, and this has made it possible for innovations to emerge concerning waste
management. Various countries across the globe compete to get a market share of the world
economy, and waste management strategy is one of the critical factors that support the
investments. With the introduction of automatic waste management systems, it is clear that
controlling pollution due to waste materials will be much more comfortable, more efficient, and
much economical. The project is not very expensive since it is an integration into the traditional
mechanisms; hence this would allow easy implementation.
