AI Summary
This project focuses on the design of a water treatment plant, addressing water scarcity and ensuring the supply of pure water for domestic purposes. The project involved data collection for a feasibility study, analysis of water quality parameters such as alkalinity, hardness, iron, and chemical oxygen demand, and the design of treatment units including rapid filtration, flocculators, sedimentation tanks, and rapid sand filters. The student's work included designing the water treatment plant, analyzing water quality, determining water demand, identifying water sources, and designing the storage reservoir. The project also identified issues such as cracks in the water storage reservoir and loose railings, providing solutions using polymer-based repair materials and all-purpose grouting materials. The project aimed to produce creative and innovative work through collaborative effort and the application of civil engineering knowledge and skills.

CE 2.2 Project Background
CE 2.2.1 Characteristics of the project
This project of Design of Water Treatment Plant was my second important project in
civil engineering career. There is often scarcity of water and our project helped in solving
these issues. A water treatment plan comprises of the ability in supplying pure as well as
healthier water for the several domestic purposes. This particular project comprised of the
collection of data for feasibility study of any such plant within the provided area. The water
quality parameters like alkalinity, hardness, iron, sulphate, and chemical oxygen demand,
chloride, MPN and many more were eventually tested in our project. The various units of
treatment like rapid filtration, flocculator, sedimentation tanks or rapid sand filter were being
designed here.
CE 2.2.2 Objectives developed for the project
The project of Design of Water Treatment Plant consisted for two objectives. They
are as follows:
To design specific water treatment plant with proper measures.
To remove the issues of scarcity of pure and healthy water for the domestic purposes.

To analyze the water quality.
CE 2.2.3 My area of work
My major area of work was to make the basic design of the water treatment plant in
this particular project. I was responsible for checking the various impurities within the water
and also to check the demand of water in the project area provided to us. My other areas of
work involved analysis of the water quality with respect to the alkalinity, hardness, dissolved
oxygen, pH determination, sulphates, turbidity, demand of chemical oxygen and biochemical
oxygen and many others. Moreover, I even made the design of the storage reservoir in this
project.

first and the foremost responsibility in this project was to check the demand of water within
our project area. I knew this was important, since it helped me to understand how much water
is consumed on a daily basis by the consumers. My next responsibility in the project was to
search for the several sources of water in our area. This helped me in understanding the
current position of water usage by the people. I was also responsible for checking the most
common impurities within the water and what were the harmful effects of them on human
beings or other residing animals. I even analyzed the water quality for the hardness, pH
determination, dissolved oxygen and many others. The storage reservoir of the project was
also made by me.
CE 2.3 Distinctive Activity
CE 2.3.1 Engineering knowledge and skills applied in the project
I have utilized my extreme knowledge as well as skills of civil engineering to make
the project successful. I am a hard-working and sincere individual and I also have several
skills like problem solving or critical thinking. Since, I have better skills of leadership; I have
the core capability in managing or providing appropriate guidance to each and every junior. I
even have used my various computer proficiencies within this project, which included
Primavera, Microsoft Office and Microsoft Project. I even have utilized my linguistic skills
and hence was able to communicate with all the local workers easily.
CE 2.3.3 Comprehending the Theory of Project
Water pollution is the most dangerous issue in today’s world. It is the significant
contamination of the water bodies, generally as the major result of several human activities.
The water bodies involved such as rivers, lakes, oceans, groundwater and aquifers. This water
pollution eventually results when the contaminants are being introduced into natural
environment. For solving the issue of water pollution, the water treatment plan is considered

as the most effective of all. It guarantees the supplying of cleaner, purer as well as hygienic
water for the purpose of drinking. It solely removes every impurity from the water. It
comprises of the collection of water from various suitable sources, removal of the impurities
and maintenance of hygiene in water. The entire process is called the water purification or
water treatment. The most significant procedures of purification of water are screening,
filtration, disinfection and various others.
The water demand for per person is around 5 to 8 litres in one day and thus in a larger
area, the water consumption is much higher.
Table 1: Water Demand for Institutional Needs
The most common impurities of water are classified in three sections, which are
suspended impurities, dissolved impurities ad colloidal impurities. All of these comprise of

various effects on the human beings or other animals. The pH for the acidic ranges from 0 to
7 and for the alkali ranges from 7 to 14. The hardness of the water occurs by the divalent
metallic actions.

Our project area was Indira Gandhi Institute of Engineering and Technology for
Women, Nellikuzhi that is situated at about 3km from the Kothamangalam town. The
population is around 2000 people. Therefore, we designed the project for 2000 people. Water

treatment can be defined as any procedure, which improves the overall quality of the water
for making it much more acceptable for any particular end usage. These end usages might
be drinking, irrigation, supply of industrial water, and maintenance of river flow, recreation
of water or many more usages. The water treatment is responsible for removal of undesirable
components and contaminants, or even reducing their distinct concentration for the purpose
that this water would become fit for the desired or expected end usage. Proper treatment for
the production of drinking water majorly involves the elimination of several contaminants
from the raw water and thus producing water, which is absolutely pure enough for all the
human consumptions without any type of short term and long term threat of the adverse
effect of health. The substances, which are eliminated in this procedure of the treatment of
drinking water, subsequently involve algae, bacteria, suspended solids, fungi, viruses,
and various minerals like manganese or iron. The procedures included in the elimination of
various contaminants mainly include several physical processes like filtration
and settling, chemical processes like coagulation and disinfection as well as the biological
procedures like slow sand filtration. Various measures were taken for ensuring the quality of
water not only by relating to the water treatment, but also to the distribution and conveyance
after treatment.
The determination of the total solids was made by the drying of measured sample or
the evaporation of sample at the temperature of 1050C for the period of around 1 hour. For
analysis purposes, we classified the total solid as inorganic and organic solid. The sewage
sample was allowed for stand for about 2 hours and then we observed the settle able solids.
We have used Winkler method in our project checking the dissolved oxygen. Technologies
for the potable water as well as all other uses were also well developed, and several
generalized designs are eventually available from where the various treatment processes
could be chosen for the pilot testing over the particular source of water. Moreover, a set of

various private organizations often provide the technological solutions to remove some of the
contaminants.
CE 2.3.4 Identified issues and their solutions
2.3.4.1 Issues
There were few issues in the project, which were required to be solved as early as
possible. The first issue that I had faced in this project was the presence of cracks in our
designed water storage reservoir. The cracks were subsequently diminishing the longevity of
this storage reservoir and hence were very risky for using in our project. The next problem,
which I had faced here, was the loose railings. When the concrete cracks form, the adjacent
railing along step or the perimeter could easily become loose. The loose railings were
extremely problematic for our water storage reservoir. These two problems were substantially
bringing significant delay in the project. Therefore, we checked these problems perfectly and
thus were able in resolving them.
2.3.4.2 Solutions
I provided various solutions to all the issues or problems that we had faced in this
particular project of Design of Water Treatment Plant. For the first significant issue of the
detection of cracks in water storage reservoir, I suggested that these cracks within the slab or
driveway, which are about ½" wide to about ¼" deep, could be easily fixed by the repair
material that is based on polymers. This type of repair material then helped us to detect these
cracks promptly. For the next issue of the loose railings, I provided the suggestion using the
all purposes grouting materials for the purpose of re-anchoring the various bolts or the
railings for the most secured and lasting placement.
