Structure of web
Difference between the web and the internet
One should clearly understand that the web and the internet are two totally different things.
The global connection of computers which is mostly through telephone lines is called
the internet. We can send emails, update blogs, read news, watch videos all by the
means of internet while the web is an application of the web.
The global collection of images, text, audio files, videos and other multimedia content
is called the web. It is called the web because of the way all this data is linked
together. The web pages contain all this digital information along with hyperlinks all
across the pages such that people can navigate between different web pages. In other
words, internet is used by the web to deliver information.
Overview and Architecture
The World Wide Web is better known as www which is the collection of network accessible
data. It is used to pass on information between two nodes in internet. The architecture of
WWW is shown below:
Figure 1: Architecture of web
WWW uses client server architecture to function. Below are steps which show how world
wide web functions:
The user enters the website url (for example, http://www.google.com) in the browser.

It is then the job of browser to request the domain name server for the internet
protocol address corresponding to the website that was requested.
The browser then sends web page request to web server using HTTP protocol. The
HTTP protocol defines the way of communication for the web-server and browser.
Web server then obtains requests using the HTTP protocol & verifies its web page
search. If discovered, it will send it back to the web-browser & close HTTP
connection.
Browser then receives and displays the web page.
This complete system runs on the standard networking protocols (TCP/IP, DNS etc.).

Website development process
Information collection: Scope, Target audience, Purpose, Main goals
The discovery & research at this stage, defines how the website will look like in the
successive steps. At this stage, the most essential task is to get a clear sense of the purposes of
the website that will be developed, the main objectives that need to be achieved along with
the target audience we want to lure towards the website. Various types of web sites offer
different functionality for visitors, which implies that different technologies must be used for
the respective purposes. A well-described & comprehensive plan based on this pre-
development information can safeguard the development team from spending extra assets on
overcoming unforeseen issues such as altering design or adding unplanned functionality[2].
Planning
At this stage of website development, the development team provides the client with an
overview of the website design and shows a basic structure so that client can request for the
changes if any before the actual development process begins. A sitemap is used to describe
the relations among the different areas of the website. This sitemap can be used to analyse
how easy will it be for a user to navigate among the different pages of the website.
In order to make sure that the customer is satisfied with how the website will look,
wireframes are created which are rough sketches of the website design. Wireframes provide a
visual representation of the website that is going to be developed. Providing wireframes
ensure that the client is satisfied with the website in terms of how it looks and can suggest
changes if required.
Website design and page layouts
Layout of the website is the result of the work of the designer. It may be a sketch of visuals or
a graphic design. The layout's main objective is to portray the structure of information,
represent the content visually, & show the basic functionality. Layouts comprise of colors,
logos, icons, images, and may provide a general idea of the website to be developed. The
client can then evaluate the design and provide feedback. If the customer is not sure of certain
aspects of the design, the layout is altered and sent back to them for review. This cycle is
repeated until they are completely satisfied[1].
Content assembly
Writing as well as collating content generally overlaps with other phases of creating websites,
and its importance cannot be undervalued. In this phase, the very essence needed to
communicate to the website's viewers is put in writing and calls-to-action added. Writing
material also involves creating capturing headlines, proofreading text, adding new text,
collating current text, etc., which takes effort & time. It is better to gather all website content
before or during the coding of the website.

Coding phase
The website coding begins at this phase. The elements that are added at the wireframing and
review stage are actually added to the website as per the requirements and the design in
turned to reality. The home page and the sub pages of the website are created one by one on
the basic structure of the website which ensure that all the pages have a similar look and feel.
Besides the front-end designing, the back-end development also begins which contains the
main business logic for the website. The backend development provides features to the
website on which web-application are executed. Web responsiveness is also added at this
stage if required[1].
Maintenance
After the website is delivered to the customer it is also necessary to keep updating and
maintaining the website. In case any features are required to be added or any bug fixing is
required. The client may face errors while using the website which are fixed at this stage.
