1Management Practice and Theory
Introduction
With the advent of 21st century, the concept of Managerial Theories took a significant
turn. With a more neo-liberal policies, the corporate organizations, played a pivotal role in
reshaping the organizational approach. Organizations, those who have experienced a steadfast
growth in 21st century, are empowered with greater organizational values. The leadership of
these organizations, impeccably trained with sheer brilliance have succeeded in creating an
impact on the corporate world. This essay tends to focus on several aspects of Managerial Skills,
with a reflective approach to the topic (Berman,2014). Also this essay tends to focus on several
terminologies and their connotations and perceptions from and individual’s as well as from an
organization’s perspective.
Discussion
The global corporate and organizational outlook took a vehement turn with the advent of
21st century. The realistic and more analytical approach to the situations eventually led to the rise
of several organizational theories. The several terms associated to the Managerial and Corporate
thesaurus started to depict different connotations (Hogan,2017). The newly emerged theories
have succeeded in creating an impact on the organizations in most effective way.
My personal experience in corporate world has so far been excellent. The organization I
am associated with is a renowned banking service in Australia. My organization ‘Westpac’
started its journey in 1817. Being the oldest banking service in Australia my organization has
experienced various dynamic situations, which eventually led it rise to the heights of its power.

During the initial days, this organization was known as ‘The Bank of New South Wales’. And in
1982 it merged with another banking service, and the journey of Westpac started. Needless to
say, being an organization that dates back to 19th century, has been through various situations.
The newly emerged ‘Westpac’ faced situations like the decline of Soviet, the vehement advent of
Neo-Liberal policies.
The growth of an organization depends on the managerial skill and the aptness of the
leadership. Though the employees are the revenue generator and responsible for the productive
output of an organization, still the leadership of an organization plays a pivotal role in re-shaping
the prevailing ideas (Czaika,2013).
I have been working in this organization since couple of years, precisely a year or two. I
have witnessed changes brought into this organization. When I am using the term ‘Change’ I am
talking about the connotation that has been perceived in corporate world. Change is referred to
the alteration of the prevailing traits of an organization (Fowler,2013). Often it can be observed
that the change brought into the organization has been denied by the employees. The utmost duty
of the leadership is to look into this matter and resolve the issue with greater sense of
responsibility.
A pertinent question may arise, that why I have chosen Westpac? As an employee of this
renowned banking organization, I have seen so many changes adopted by the organization to
sustain in the market. The purpose of this organization is to serve people with the best banking
service possible. Apart from banking service, this organization looks after other segments, like

lifestyle, tours and travels. The main objective of the organization is to serve people with better
service. The operational management of this organization is efficient enough to bring about the
changes that are dynamic in nature and pertinent for the market scenario. As per my experience I
have somehow felt a need of reformation in market survey process and the data analytical
system.
The term ‘Effectiveness’ carries different aspects and connotations. The basic idea of
‘Effectiveness’ bears the basic understanding of doing things rightly. In case of organizational
set yup, the term carries a much heavier connotations (Cameron,2014). The term in case of
organizational output is used as a parameter to determine the qualitative output of an
organization. There lay a subtle difference between efficiency and effectiveness. The way I have
perceived these two terms, may vary from than that of others. I have never been an efficient
employee, but an effective one. I have executed things done in a very unusual way. My
perception of ‘Effectiveness’ depends on how aptly the work has been executed, and how it has
succeeded in creating an impact on the organization (Covey,2013). The qualitative and
quantitative output of an organization with a more socio-corporate outlook is the most effective
criteria I would have looked for in the organization.
Now if I consider myself as a stakeholder of the Westpac banking service, I would have
considered several other aspects of the term ‘Effectiveness’. Had I been in a decision making
position in the organization, I would have thought otherwise. My perception from a consumer’s
point of view would have been otherwise also. As a customer, my opinion on Effectiveness
would have been completely different than that of mine as an employee. It is quite evident to say

that a customer is not well accustomed with the nitty-gritty of a production unit of an
organization
(Rahim Afzalur2017). He is only aware of the commodity, had I been a customer, the sole
criteria of ‘effectiveness would have been otherwise. The quality of the commodity would have
been the only determinant to mark the effectiveness. Often in a haste to maximize the profit,
organizations compromise with the qualitative output.
Conclusion
During the initial days in WESTPAC I have always been eager to know how an
organization with an enormous expansion runs. Initially being an impatient though effective
employee I was always in a haste to cope up with the workplace ethics and the organizational
approach. It has always been very interesting and inspiring to witness an organization with a
dynamic pragmatic approach. Adoptable to any kind of changes, this organization tends to
accumulate various socio-ethnic cultures, which eventually helped this organization to flourish
with a more pragmatic outlook.
It can be concluded that the term ‘Effectiveness’ carries different connotations depending
on the various perceptions perceived by an individual or a group. The individual or a collective
conscience often determines the future of an organization. With an intricate approach to the topic
this essay has tried to focus on the several aspects of the Managerial Theories keeping in mind
the organizational values and how the ethics of it is related to the productive output.
