Executive Summary
The Australian Government has introduced a number policies over the years in the
country of Australia. While some of these policies were liked and enjoyed by the people of
the country, there were other policies at the same time, which proved to be unpopular with
the Australians themselves. Thus, all these good and bad policies were a part of the
Government of Australia itself. This report will look at the White Australia Policy which was
implemented by the Government of Australia.

Introduction
The Australian Government had introduced a number of policies in the countries over
the years. All these policies were made up by the Government of Australia for the welfare of
the people. However, some of the policies were liked by the people while others were not.
One of these policies was the White Australia policy which was introduced by the Australian
Government to prevent the immigration of the non-white people into the country of Australia.
This report will look at the White Australia policy of the country and will find out how the
policy had affected the people of the country and whether they were benefitted by the policy
or not.
Discussion
What was the Policy About?
The White Australia Policy was launched by the Government of Australia to
implement a number of policies which was used by the Australian Government to prevent the
people of non-European origin from entering into the country of Australia itself. These
people included anybody who were non-Europeans like Asians, which primarily included the
Chinese and the people of the Pacific Islands which included the Melanesians (McGowan,
2013). The policy met mixed reactions from the people themselves because while some of the
Australians supported the policy themselves, there were others who were opposed to the
policy themselves. Later, the policy was removed by the Australian Government between the
years 1949 – 1973.
History
The beginning if the White Australia Policy was said to be in the year 1901 with the
passing of the Immigration Restriction Act of 1901 by the Government of Edmund Barton.
Thus, began the White Australia Policy which would continue all the year till the time of the

Second World War (Levey, 2015). The result of this act was that the British migrants began
to become prevalent in the country itself. Thus, it can be stated that the people who were not
Europeans were not allowed entry into the country itself. However, this act received
objections from the Brits in the country who felt that such an objective by the Australian
Government might offend the people from other countries as they might feel the policy unjust
for them (Hogan, 2015). It was then the policy was modified by the Government by making
the immigrants go through a 50-word dictation test, which if they managed to pass, would be
allowed entry into the country itself.
The policy was supported by the Australian Labour Party who wanted to protect all
the jobs in the country for the white people in the country, and the reasons that they provided
ranged from the economic protection of the people the country to the racist remarks that the
white people are superior than the black people and hence they are the ones who deserved the
job and not the people from the other countries. Thus, the support from the Australian Labour
Party, helped the White Australia Policy, to strengthen the demands that only the Australians
would get the jobs for themselves (McGowan, 2013).
Paris Peace Conference, 1919
At the Paris Peace Conference in 1919, Australian Prime Minister Billy Hughes fully
supported the White Australia Policy and disagreed to Japan’s demands of racial equality.
Other Prime Ministers of Australia like that of Alfred Deakin and Stanley Bruce also were
supporters of the White Australian Policy.
Abolition of the Policy
Australia was in a vulnerable position in the Second World War with the
advancement of Japan in to the world. Billy Hughes, declared that the country was in a
position where it had to be populated or it would perish in the war (Hogan et. all, 2015). Once

the war was over, large number of began to populate the country from other countries. These
people included both Europeans as well as non-Europeans in the country. This ultimately led
to the abolition of the White Australian Policy from the country of Australia.
Effect and Impact of the Policy
The effect of the White Australia Policy in the country of Australia was that the it
opened the policies for the Australian Government to have the jobs only for the white skinned
people in the country so that the people from other countries of the world are not able to get
the jobs for themselves. The policy became strong because of the support that it gained from
the Australian Labour Party itself. It was because of the support that they gained from the
Australian Labour Party that the policy managed to become strong hand and had an impact in
the country itself.
The impact of the White Australian policy in the country of Australia is that the
policy managed to keep the country under the control of the white skinned people especially
the British for a longer time. This enabled the British to control the resources of the country
for a longer time which prevented the people from the other countries from using the
resources (McGowan,2013).
Conclusion
Thus, from the above discussions, it can be concluded that the White Australia Policy
was one of the most impactful of the policies made by the Government of Australia. It nor
only prevented people from other countries to enter the country, but was the biggest example
of racism ever took place in the country itself. Therefore, it can be stated that this policy had
impacted the country in many ways by allowing only the white skinned people of the country
to continue their use of the resources of the country itself. Hence, this was the so called the

white people of the country itself.
