Level of Performance Expected in Assessment Tasks
This is a Cert IV course and the standard of performance expected is high. We expect that you are able to
explain, describe and articulate your response to each assessment task using three to four sentences
maximum. We do not accept dot pointed answers unless the question asks you to “list”.
You will not qualify for your Certificate IV WHS until all assessment tasks are completed and you have been
deemed competent in all of them.
Self-Paced Training Days
If you feel that after the 5 days of face-to-face training that you would benefit from additional training days,
offers ‘Self-Paced Training Days’ days throughout the year. No appointment is necessary, and these days run
according to the schedule that can be seen in your Student Portal. These days are designed for you to master
your learning in any area that you feel you need more training in. These self-paced training days will give you
an opportunity to work one-on-one with a WHS trainer and assessor and to come together from WHS students
from other cohorts. Assessment questions can also be clarified in these days.

Due Date
Due date is from the first day of the face to face component of your WHS course with .You will not qualify for
your Certificate IV WHS until all assessment tasks are completed and you have been deemed competent in all
of them. Please note that your enrolment with will cease after 12 months and any assessments that agrees to
process due to special needs beyond this date will incur an enrolment fee of $400.

MARKING OF ASSESSMENTS
Requirements for Competency
Assessment tasks will be marked by a qualified assessor. We will endeavour to mark your assessment within 10
business days of submission.To be deemed competent, you will need to have provided evidence that shows
competency against all the performance criteria.
Assessment Outcomes
Once marked, will send you a checklist where you will see your assessor’s assessment decision of S
(Satisfactory) or NYS (Not Yet Satisfactory) marked against each part of your assessment tasks. If you are
deemed NYS in any part of the assessment tasks, then the outcome on your checklist will be ‘further evidence
required’ and you will be advised what evidence remains to be submitted. You will be given an opportunity to
resubmit your answer for reassessment. You will be issued with your Certificate IV in WHS only after all
assessment tasks are deemed S (satisfactory).
Resubmissions
You may be required to re-submit assessment tasks and will be notified in writing via email if this is the case.
You will have 2 weeks to then resubmit any assessment tasks initially deemed NYS. After the initial assessment,
will allow a further two resubmissions before a $199 fee will be charged each time a student wishes to be
given a further chance to resubmit their work.
Candidates who submit assessment tasks after this period will be deemed not competent unless there is a
special need that are made aware of during this period.
Literacy and numeracy
Candidates will need to have sufficient numeracy and literacy skills to read and comprehend instruction for
referencing legislation, preparing reports, completing assessments and searching the internet.
Please discuss any language, literacy or numeracy issues with us prior to attending. This will enable the
instructor to organise appropriate support facilities, for example we can arrange to conduct assessments orally
rather than in the written form, or extra tuition, as appropriate.
Health Issues
Please discuss any health issues which may affect your training and assessment with the instructor prior to
attending.
Access and Equity

specialise in fabrication of steel products for the agricultural, construction and mining sectors
as well as for the housing industry. They also make made-to-order pieces of equipment and
machinery. They operate from a very large purpose-built facility with three factory workshops
and employ about 100 workers.

ABC Steel has been in business for seven years and in that time, they have seen their
company grow both professionally and financially. They have a good rapport with most
workers and a lot of them are long standing employees. They have just taken on 10
immigrant workers who are new to the country. These workers tend to stick to themselves
and do not speak much English although their job skills are good, and they are quick to learn
by watching others.
One area of the business that needs attention is work health and safety. ABC Steel has had
their share of incidents both minor and serious over the years and given the nature and
hazards associated with the work it is surprising that injury rates have not been higher. They
have a WHS Manual within their document system, but it is not being utilised at this point.
You have been employed as a WHS assistant to help assist with the establishment of a WHS
management system for the company and to evaluate the overall needs in relation to
workplace health and safety.

At this point in time there is a lack of understanding of WHS legislation. A WHS policy is in
place but has not been integrated into work practices, workplace safe operational
procedures are few and far between and injuries and incidents are only recorded if a
compensation claim is made. There are no regular WHS meetings, no elected HSRs and no
established WHS committee. The Human Resources Manager, Michelle Baxter, has designed
a mentorship program around WHS and Factory 2 Supervisor Norm Smith is a certified WHS
trainer and assessor but neither of these functions are being utilised.
As well as helping to rectify the problems outlined above, you will also be required to; assist
with effective WHS organisation of contractors; collect and evaluate workplace hazardous
conditions; investigate incidents and file reports on any serious injuries that may occur as
well as develop a workplace safety alert.
As WHS assistant, your duties also include help with producing comprehensive action plans,
reports that outline major areas of concerns as well as your recommendations to help get
ABC Steel back on track with its health and safety obligations.

Assessment 1 Part 1 WHS Legislation
Scenario – Additional information
Contractor services have been engaged by ABC Steel to carry out general metal work duties as work has
been very busy and the company are understaffed. The contractors are all South Korean nationals who are
fast at their work but have little to no English language skills. They have had a 15-minute induction session
that was delivered in English but none of the workers has signed off to state they understood what was
discussed. It is worth noting that the company does not carry out regular meetings for WSH and there are
no elected HSRs or established WHS committee.
On 12th July 2019 one contractor, Kim Lee, was working alone, moving, cutting and welding a manhole
cover inside a silo (confined space). After finishing the weld Kim Lee applies a chemical to clean the piece of
metal. He was not wearing safety goggles, a face mask, gloves or hearing protection. The area was quite
dark and noisy and at times temperatures can get above 45 degrees Celsius. He was also working un
supervised as it was lunch time and the supervisor was having lunch while the worker “worked through” to
make up time on the job task.
While carrying out the finishing task, the chemical fumes have built up in the area and the contractor has
collapsed due to toxic fumes. One of the other Korean workers (Jin) who heard the collapse, runs to the
scene to help but he has not been trained in first aid. It is relayed through Jin that Kim needs medical help
and an ambulance is called.
After Kim has been taken to the hospital a workplace meeting is called by the factory manager to find out
what has happened. It is decided that a factory inspection should be carried out to note any other areas
where unsafe situations may be occurring.
Head management has asked that the factory managers sit in at a board room meeting to discuss what the
company’s health and safety legal requirements are and to consider implementing a companywide health
and safety management system to help make sure these types of injuries do not occur again in the future.
Factory 1 manger has also been informed that this incident will need to be investigated to find out areas of
non-compliance and where controls have broken down. You will be on the team as the WHS assistant.
