ANNOTATED BIBLIOGRAPHY
The topic chosen for the assignment is the article on a Saudi woman who “dared
to drive” to spread the message of women emancipation especially in the Middle East
(Npr.org, 2018). The topic gives a strong message about gender inequality and the
ways to fight it. The dare shown by Manal Al-Sharif is an inspiration to other women.

The book authored by Katie Coleman, talks about gender roles and inequality
that is visible across the globe in almost every field both professional and private. The
book has dedicated one entire chapter to gender inequality where the author talks about
the role of women as minority. Further, the author explores the violent traditions across
the globe that is affecting women in an uneven manner.
The book has maintained a lucid flow throughout in defining and explaining the
role of gender and its differences. The fight by Manal Al-Sharif for introducing driving
rights for Saudi women is a prime example of gender inequality. As the author very
clearly mentions in her book that women face various forms of oppressions one of
which is, veiling and they opt various ways to fight this oppression.

In this TED Talk with Michael Kimmel, he talks about gender equality and how it
is good for everyone. Kimmel gives references of several researches and studies that

show the benefits of gender equality for countries, for companies and for men as well.
He also brings forth race inequality within gender to demonstrate the visibility of race
within gender.
The video is enriching in terms of knowing the way men feel about gender
equality because Kimmel provides real life experiences where some men support
gender equality while other do not. On the other hand, there are men who have little
idea about gender equality but only support it because they associate gender equality
with only women.

The TED Talk by Tillett Wright brings forth a new dimension of gender equality
where it is not about women but about all forms of gender. The presenter shows portrait
photographs of people who are not cent percent straight to show the audiences that
gender equality is not confined to equality of women.
The video opens new spectrums of gender equality in the sense that it confronts
the world and questions the notion that people with different gender choices have less
rights as humans.

The American Association of University Women (AAUW) is an American based
organization that has as its mission to utilize research, education and advocacy for

advancing gender equality for women. The values upheld by the association include
nonpartisan, fact-based, integrity, inclusion and intersectionality.
The association’s policies work at all levels from local, state, national and global
to give power to women and girls. In terms of equal rights for women, AAUW commits
itself to the course and authorization of the Equal Rights Amendment. The issues and
articles mentioned in the website reflect the inherent issue of inequality even in most
powerful countries like the United States.

In this news article published last year in Japan, gender inequality issue is further
explored from a South East Asian perspective. The article mentions Japan’s downslide
from being at 111th in World Economic Forum’s global gender equality ranking in 2016
to 114th in 2017. Gender equality in Japan, as the article states, is showing good signs
but it is still very slow as compared to other countries.
The author of the article puts forward several instances from the media world in
Japan where gender equality for women is still absent. Examples such as animes made
in Japan where women characters are never seen commuting to work provide a clear
picture of gender inequality in a developed country like Japan.
