Introduction:
The organisations in order to achieve high levels of performance emphasise on
management of their manpower in alignment with their business requirements. This means that
they train their employees and compensate them as per the industry standards. The purpose of the
assignment would be exploring the importance of strategic people management or strategic
human resource management in a business organisation. The organisation which would form the
basis of the research would be Woolworths Supermarket, the leading supermarket chain in
Australia (Woolworths.com.au, 2020). The structure of the report would be divided into three
main parts namely, SHRM, motivation and communication.
Background:
I can reflect upon this my experience to point out that human capital is the key capital of
business organisations. This is because the employees of the business firms acquire, management
and implement knowledge as well as skills while operating which in turn contribute to the
performance of the concerned business organisations. That is why managers at the top level and
the middle level emphasise on management of people or in other words the employees in line
with the business requirements to achieve high productivity.
Overview of the situation:
I can reflect upon my own experience as a marketing manager to point out that the
employees play important role in achievement of marketing targets. For example, the employees
of the marketing department of Woolworths are responsible for selling goods to the customers
which in turn generates revenue for the retail chain (Woolworths.com.au, 2020). I can also
reflect upon my experience to point out that the employees attending the customers at the outlets

of the retail chain to gain information about their expectations in terms of products from the
retail giant. The employees communicate the feedbacks obtained from customers to the
managers who in turn incorporate these feedback while forming product strategies. This ensures
satisfaction of customers which in turn generates high revenue.
The nature of organisation- Woolworths Supermarkets:
Nature of business:
Woolworths is a chain of supermarket owned by Woolworths Group and is based in
Australia. The supermarket chain operates through a vast chain of brick-and-mortar outlets and
on its own ecommerce platform. The product line of Woolworths consists of FMCG products
like food products, homecare products and skincare products.
Application of SHRM in the operations of Woolworths:
I can point from my own experience that people management plays a very significant role
in the retail operations of Woolworths. This is because, the knowledge, skills and competencies
of the employees enable them to serve the customers better. This creates customer satisfaction
and generate revenue for the retail chain.
Key concepts and importance of strategic people management or strategic human resource
management:
Strategic human resource management or SHRM:
Wright and Ulrich (2017) define the term SHRM as, ‘the pattern of planned human
resource deployments and activities intended to enable an organization to achieve its goals’. This
means that business organisations manage their employees in alignment with their business
needs to enable them to achieve high performance standards. For example, Woolworths train its

tenured and new employees to improve their skills, knowledge and competencies. The
employees as a result would be able to serve the customers more efficiently which would
generate higher revenue.
Job satisfaction:
Strategic human resource management contributes towards creation of job satisfaction
among the employees which enables the concerned organisations retain employees in higher
rates. This is because training of employees enables them to perform better which in turn enables
them to achieve more targets. Achievement of higher targets enable employees to achieve salary
and incentives which in turn results in job satisfaction among employees.
Relevance and Experience:
I can point out upon reflection upon my experience as a marketing manager that SHRM
enables the business organisations retain employees and achieve higher levels of market
performance. This is because retention of employees enable business organisations like
Woolworths deploy their employees along their long term strategies which ensure better
execution of these strategies and higher revenue generation. Thus, I can establish on the basis of
this discussion that SMRM is extremely relevant in business organisations.
Relatedness of SHRM:
I can point out that SHRM is extremely related to the market operations of business
organisations. It enables them to achieve higher business performance levels and generate more
revenue.

Learnings:
I have learnt from my experience that SHRM is extremely important. However, I have
also learnt that gaining total employee participation in SHRM is difficult because some
employees may not consider it important. I would take a different approach to implement SHRM
in the future by training the employees prior to asking them for participation in the SHRM
strategies of the retail chain.
Motivation and Influence:
I can point out that strategic human resource management motivates the employees and
has positive influence on their performances. This is because implementation of SHRM
strategies like training motivates employees to achieve higher performance levels.
Relevance and Experience as above:
I can reflect upon my own experience to point out that SHRM motivates employees to
deliver higher performances. Thus, it holds great importance in ultimately contributing to the
high performance of the organisations concerned like Woolworths.
Learning:
I have learnt that managers should motivate employees to achieve higher levels of
performance. They should provide both financial benefits like salary hikes and non-financial
benefits like work from home facilities to motivate employees.
Communication, Conflict and Negotiation:
Communication, conflict management and negotiation play important roles in ensuring
high employee performances. This ultimately contributes to the high performances of employees.

Relevance and Experience:
I can reflect from my professional experience of that of a marketing manager that
communication between the upper level employees, middle level employees and lower level
employees enables smooth implementation of business plans. This also reduces chances of
conflict between the upper level and lower level employees. The business organisations are able
to negotiate more profitably with clients.
Learning:
I can point out from my experience that communication enables the employees develop
more in depth knowledge about the strategies and ways to attain them. This to a great extent
reduces chances of conflict and facilitate efficient execution of the strategies.
Conclusion:
I can conclude from the above discussion that the management of the companies should
adopt SHRM as the core of the people management policies. The managers should motivate their
subordinate employees. The management should maintain continuous communication with the
employees. This would contribute towards better conflict management and boost the all over
performance of the companies like Woolworths.
