INTRODUCTION
It can be said that work based experience is one of the important aspect of business and
institution learning and enhancing skill, knowledge and education. Work based experience
helps in acquiring comprehensive understating of workers and time within organisation. In
this regards, the report will cover suitable business that can improve experience in a
particular industry. For this report, Owens Corning organisation is selected. In addition,
negotiation with work and academic supervisor a proposal towards working experience and
business constrains on working experience will be discussed. Further, tasks and
responsibilities in working experience, plan and benefits of proposed activities to
organisation and learner will be discussed in this report. Finally, the report will demonstrate
needs of placement following all codes of practices, systematic records. Initial plan and
suggestions for improvement to review the appropriate supervisor with this will be covered.

TASK 1
P1.1, M1 Evaluating appropriate organisation that could provide industry experience
It is very essential for students to get work experience in order to acquire professional skills
with appropriate industry based experience. It will be beneficial for the students to take
proper work based learning for their career growth and development. There are various types
of establishment for placement which includes placement for part-time job, paid placement,
summer work in any industries. It is a significant way for students to have a work based
experience.
In order to get a work based experience, I have to determine a suitable organisation and
industry where I can place and get experience for my future career growth and development.
It can be said that manufacturing industry is terms of general building material will be
suitable for being an engineering student (Vernon, 2017). It is a vast industry that provides
many part-time and full time job opportunities in order to get a real experience associated
with different task and activities in this industry. This sector will assist me in getting better
work experience as there are diverse roles and operations involves. The career opportunity in
this sector includes engineer, formwork engineers, project manager, and back office
department hob roles.
Being engineering students, I always wanted to be an engineer in a construction sector. The
most suitable organisation for me to get a work based experience is Owens Corning Veil UK
Ltd, is the world largest manufacturer of insulation, roofing and fibreglass composites. It has
around 15000 workforces in more than26 countries. This organisation will assist me in
getting better work experience related to Roofing and asphalt in building construction.

In order to negotiate with the academic supervisor, a good proposal is required which can
showcase my ability and capability, and creditability for the assigned work. Below presented

Job Specification: Intern at structural engineer
Position supporting my career: The structural engineer has always been my professional
goal. Being engineering in construction student, I have studied related to the graphics
designing for the Roofing and asphalt and realised my interest towards it. I have taken work
experienced of the designing and physical integrity of buildings that is required for bridges
and tunnels etc. I being an intern learned that structural engineer is the career that I wanted to
peruse. This organisation will allow me to gain ample knowledge and industry experience of
the construction and the working pattern of other employees in organisation. There are
various terms which will help me in to sharpen my career and my skills of analytical thinking
in terms of my responsibilities, authority and work performance (Fukuzawa and Boyd, 2016).
This work based learning experience will give me opportunities to work with the experienced
seniors from whom I can learn different roles and responsibilities of a structural engineer and
the way they carry out their operations. I can also learn the difficulties and challenges related
to the job role in workplace.
P1.3 identifying the business constraints on work experienced offer
Work based learning in effective in getting a real experience of organisation and its
operations. However, there are certain business constraints and challenges which can I need
to encounter in my employment. The business constraints can be of two types internal and
external. Internal constraints includes the educational level, my education level is an effective
aspects which assist in boosting up confidence to carry out job responsibility effectively. As a
construction students I can easily overcome these challenge with sufficient qualification
another challenge is time-management. Further, supportive colleagues and mentors are also
crucial elements that leads to develop a better work based learning experience. If I do not get
positive working environment or supportive colleagues and mentors, it would be challenging
for me carry out my responsibility without proper feedbacks and guidance.
Another business constraint which I have to encounter is properly managing time. It requires
me to develop effective self-management and time management skills to carry out and
complete my assigned task in within the time schedule effectively and efficiently. Another
constraint can be varied in the work location which is quit challenging for me to manage
(Crook, 2018). It can be said that, structural engineer have to work both in office and on
construction sites. Depending on the size of the project, I may have to work for long hours
which are other business constraints that I have to face. It is very essential for me to gain

work based learning experience to attain my professional goal of being a structural engineer.
In order to accomplish this, require effective experience of their roles and their activities.
However, many a time’s trivial work assigned to the interns that can affect my development
and growth for the career goals. Some external factors of business constraints includes
various laws and legislation related to design and construct safe and sustainable buildings,
communication with diverse workforce is some challenges that I have to face.

P2.1, D2 assessing and prioritising the activities and responsibilities that are involved work
experience
Owens Corning is an effective organisation working in designing different parts needed for
the construction work. My tasks and responsibilities here will help me to accomplish
professional goals. As my work here is in construction sites and offices, I will work
according to the size of project. I will require outstanding abilities such as conceptual skills,
problem-solving skills and effective physics including ability to apply the mechanic
principles, safe construction and sustainable buildings. The work experience here will assist
me in different ways such as to deal with structure designs, calculating the stresses and leads
to have safe withstand. In addition, this will help me to deliver range of building raw material
and will provide understating regarding foundations, supporting beams and columns.
The work experience will also help me to have proper understanding of investigation before
starting the work regarding surveys of sites and determining the sustainability of earth which
is required for my next project (Gould and Taylor, 2017). In addition, I can develop my
coordination skills in order to consult with other on project including scientists, engineers,
and architects for landscape. It will also help in assisting the government requirements so that
they can make their inspection related to project effectively. I have responsibility to deliver
material and equipment required to complete the project and also the supervision of on-site
labours which is necessary (Structural engineer: job description, 2019). I will assist in
training programs required to work on my professional skills etc. It will help me to increase
my dedication level and time management skills to complete the project on time. In Owens
Corning has an RAMS system which will assist me to efficiently prioritize the jobs and task
as per the priority ranking for the task that has been assigned to me.
P2.2 presenting planning for work based experience
Effective work based experience is significant in order to ascertain various task and time
taken in order to undertake and complete the assigned work and project within the given time.
The work base experience plan will involve different task and activities that I have to perform
for structural engineer during my probation period in organisation. This plan will be
beneficial for me to carry out my responsibility in more effective manner. Below presented

P 2.3 Analysing the significance of proposed task to organisation and learner
I have understood that there are several benefits that I can dig out from the construction
industry in a precise manner. Owens Corning is one of the most effective organisations
working in construction industry and the working style shows its concepts of functional
system. In this regards, the benefits that I will gain during my probation period working as a
construction civil engineer are provided below:
Understanding of construction operations: During my probation period, I will learn how
an organisation working in a construction industry functions. In this regards, code of ethics
such as corporate governance and sustainability are the major factors which will be accessed
by me (Chiviacowsky and Harter, 2015). This will help me to open my new construction
business in future.

Importance of team work: I have provided with work of construction structural engineer
with team members who will help in assisting tasks. This helps in generating a cooperative
behaviour at workplace which is very important for a construction business. This will help
me to observe talent and qualities required to operate effectively.
New measures: This job opportunity will help me to identify the new measures in terms of
potentiality in working environment. I have realised that potentiality within working process
and individual efforts helps to bring down the cost of operations.
In addition, benefits of proposed activities to both business and me will help in reducing the
burden of work in different fields. It will help in monitoring all the procedure involved in
construction business to learn something new (Duffield and Whitty, 2015). This will help to
generate responsive behaviour in me and synergy as well in the organisation value chain
activities effectively.

P3.1 appropriate requirement of placement conforming relating to codes of practice
It can be said that there are different tasks will be performed by me within organisation. It
will help me in improving my knowledge and skills to work as a structural civil engineer. In
this regards, there are some British standards and code of practices which must be undertaken
in order to manage the government policies.
Health and safety: While working in my probation period, it is important for me to manage
the occupational health and safety management at workplace in order to check that the
organisation has all the safety records such as Power and Loner. This helps in minimising the
risks involved in working environment.
Waste management: As I am working as a structural civil engineer, it is important for me to
determine the wastes involved in the working process (Adnan and Boz, 2015). There are
number of raw materials required in a construction business that it is important to have their
proper use to reduce wastes and improve working process effectively.
Quality management: The organisation required to keep record of their quality
management. As the inspection process majorly consider the quality of building or any other
structure. In this regards, I have role to manage the quality such as effective management and
utilisation of resources to manage the quality of work.
In addition, I am working to complete my internship in Owens Corning. It is important for me
to aim for minimising the risks involved in my work such as injuries and risk assessment that
are the statements provide records towards effective management of my work.
P3.2 , M2 Building systematic recording of work undertaken
Systematically recording of the task and activities done is the most effective manner which
assist me to cross check my own work and analyse it effectively. Systematic record of the
assigned task includes deep study of the task and responsibilities that I have carried out in the
business cycle. It can be said that, Owens Corning has effective communication line and
system to record the task and activities done by the team as per the priory basis. Owens has a
job card system which is efficient in systematically record every job that team and its
members perform print on the job card (Wilson, 2018). This system will assist me in properly
recording my own work and activities. As per the system of organisation, after the job has

been done and assessed it will be signed by the production leader of engineering supervisor.
After completing the task and activities are properly computerised and properly recorded.
Log index book is the book in organisation which contains information related to the job role,
employee’s name, their phone numbers and the data that is related to qualification as well.
Log index book is also helpful in identifying the task and activities which I have performed
during my probation period.
P3.3, D3 Revising the initial plan for work based experience
In my initial plan for work based experience in Owens Corning in manufacturing industry.
The work based experience learning programme in my initial plan is created to identify
different elements helps me in proving and developing my professional career. This initial
plan is very effective for me to understand the working culture and system in the organisation
(Lapina, Roga, and Müürsepp, 2016). However, I have analysed that there are certain change
that I have to undertake in my plan in order to enhance my ability, capability and skills to be
a structural engineer. To enhance my skills and knowledge, I have to make appropriate
changes in my plan through making changing in work schedule and considering different
aspects of roles and duties of structural engineer. I need to undertake different task and
activities in order to improvise my skills to enrich my professional career.
Revised work based experience plan involves assigning more task which relates design,
investigation, communication and management and training. These are some prime
responsibilities that I have to perform as a structural engineer includes monitoring and
inspecting works undertaken by the contractors. This task is beneficial for me to explore how
structure engineer activities and task. This new task has been assigned to me that will
increase my efficiency in performing other works which is helpful in growth and
development of professional career.
P3.4 Suggesting improvement and review with the supervisor
In order to get proper suggestions, that will assist me in get review from my supervisor so as
to improve my work based experience. It can be said that, the primary suggestions that can be
make is to revise and improve my initial planning of work based experience so that
appropriate modification can be done. It would be beneficial for me to acquire proper
knowledge and skills required to be a structural engineer. It can be recommended that,
effective guidance is necessary related to the industry and work environment from seniors
and colleagues. It can be said that the first suggestion is to improve my skills and knowledge

by undertaking various roles and responsibilities during my probation period in organisation.
It is effective way to get glimpse of how a structural engineer works and perform their task
effectively. I can also take direction from my modified plan to undertake various new
activities which could help me in improving my career objectives (Staddon, 2016). It can be
said that, the changes in my initial plan of work based learning experience is itself a
recommendation to review my previous performance as per the initial plan and the new
performance as per the revised and modified plan. Another aspect of improvement is to
consider every aspects while preparing the plan and act step by step as per the planning
efficiently and learned from the previous mistakes.
