Evaluating the Effectiveness of Top-Down vs. Bottom-Up WBS Methods

Types of WBS
The different types of WBS approaches are as follows: -
1. Top Down Approach: Top Down approach helps in generation of more complete and
an accurate Work Break Down Structure (WBS). In this approach compartmentalising
of tasks are performed. the deliverables are decomposed to their smallest parts and the
prosecutions are taken into consideration. Focus is suppressed more in the
departmentalized data of the scheduling rather than that of the design that is made.
This is one of the most rational method of drawing a WBS (Ahmed 2016). These are
the reasons of using Top Down Approach of WBS formation.
2. Bottom Up Approach: In case of the Bottom Up approach, problems that are
fundamental in nature are solved. In this case the issues that are prolonged are not
solved with similar equity. Encapsulation of the data that are examined are also
performed in this approach. The information used are somewhat hiding from the
entire source mitigation process. High amount of communication is needed in this
process (Simion-Melinte 2016). Testing of the iterative steps are also required in this
approach.
Reasons of Using the Top Down process
Reasons of using the Top Down process includes realization of the focussed usage of
the resources that are present in the commencing process of individualistic management of
the application. The implementation of the firsts case acts as the identity management of the
entire solution. Better management of the identity solution is achieved with the help of the
Top Down approach of the WBS (Martens & Vanhoucke 2017). The impact of the
operational resources is well maintained and this is the main reason that Top Down approach
is chosen over the other approach. Decision making of the projects are also positive affected

in case of using the Top Down approach. This insists the fact that the management of the
project will be performed with the help of better prosecution terminology. Project goals that
are set are very specific in nature. This also leads to the fact that scope development gets
easier.
The major reason of implementing the Top Down approach over the Bottom Up
approach includes the fact that the flexibility of the policy that is framed with the help of the
Bottom Up approach is low. This leads to failure in projects that are concerned with the
iterative stages of the project (Kerzner & Kerzner 2017). Greater cooperation is required in
case of usage of the Bottom Down approach in case the management of the project is
performed with the help of the Bottom Up approach. This acts as one of the prime reasons
that the usage of the top down approach will be used over the Bottom Up approach ins
commencing of the project (Harrison & Lock 2017). The entire process will have to be
completed with the infrastructure that is initially present rather than the infrastructure that us
required by the business organization. This aspect decreases the cost efficiency of the project
that is performed with the help of the Bottom Up approach. Bottom Up approach is more
time consuming as well as more energy consuming, hence in today’s society usage of Top
Down approach is considered to be beneficial.
