LITERATURE REVIEW
Introduction
After focusing on introduction chapter the researcher need to focus on literature review
section. By having an improved focus literature review section the significant aspects related to
the subject. It is referred as most essential part of research study because it helps in
understanding subject. In this section, information which the researcher has gathered from a
range of secondary sources is presented. It is considered as a part of research which is consisted
of statements provided by diverse authors and researchers. It means literature review allows to
explore the previous studies in appropriate manner so that better outcomes can be attained in
desired manner. Research studies which are developed previously on the same subject so that
objectives can be accomplished in desired manner. Along with this, by having an improved focus
on the section the gape presents within previous researches so that issues can be overcome in
desired manner.
It also provides a theoretical evidence in respect to the subject so that better support can
be offered to overall outcome of study. It means success and effectiveness of such values is
dependent over theoretical substances associated with the study. In addition to this, it can be said
that information is being collected from secondary sources which need to be consider effectively
from researchers. In this respect, as present is based on workaholism and mental stress so
researcher has also evaluated learning in significant manner. In this literature review section the

factors that impact mental health of professional and organisation performance need to be
evaluated effectively. Along with this, it will also provide information in regard to relationship
between workaholic culture and mental health of professional. By having an effective focus on
highlights provided under study will offer better outcome.
Concept of workaholism and work engagement
As per the view of Decembrele and Lord (2008), it can be stated that workaholic situation
impacts the overall outcome in diverse manner. It has been noticed that if any business firm is
facing issue in regard to workaholic conditions then it impacts the business firm performance in
diverse manner. However, effective understanding about the subject is significant because it
helps in long term sustainability and meeting organisational success. In addition to this, it can be
said that there are very few theories have been proposed to explain impacts of today’s stressful
working lifestyle on mental health and therefore on the organisation. Jaremko and Meichenbaum,
(2013) has stated that workaholic culture might be influenced due to work engagement. It means
management need to consider such values effectively so that long term sustainability can be
advanced. It has been noticed that workaholism is considered as a force to work and manage the
stress. It was initially used by Oates in 1971 to understand the key values related to work
conditions. In addition to this, it can be said that workaholism involves two core elements
which return in most following definitions such as working extremely hard and the existence of a
strong and desirable inside ambition (Richardson and Rothstein, 2008).
Folkman(2013) has asserted that porter suggests that workaholism should be construed as
a habit. In addition to this, It is considered as unwarranted and tenacious performance with
destructive drawbacks. It is significant for businesses to focus on rejecting sights that reflect
workaholism and referred as constructive state. It has been noticed that individuals have
impressive level of efforts at the job if he or she is attracted towards workaholic aspects. Such
kind of people are focused towards hard work conditions so that long term sustainability can be
advanced effectively. Workaholic aspects helps in dealing with organisational issues and
promotes collective working. Boss, Bryant and Mancini (2013) has contended that it put much
more exertion into their jobs than is anticipated by the people with whom or for whom they
work. Such kind of people are focused towards engagement so that goals and objectives can be
accomplished. Stereotypically, they labour so stiff out of an internal obligation, necessity, or
9

initiative, and not because of peripheral issues such as fiscal booties, vocation standpoints,
organizational philosophy, or deprived matrimonial. In addition to this, burnout is a comparison
that is generally used to define an overall of psychological tiredness. Although there is certain
argument near the environment of burnout. Chiesa and Serretti (2009) has stated that the most
roughly used conceptualization instigates from Massac. In addition to this, it has been
predictable that over 90 percent of the studies on burnout use the Maslach Burnout. Due to the
prevalent amount of divergence about what operative assignation is, a substitute direction is to
describe it by starting what it is not. This has stood done by lecturing appointment on the subject
of exhaustion. It has been witnessed that demonstrative exhaustion is the fundamental piece of
burnout. Moreover, Hostility is an instantaneous report to exhaustion and depersonalization and
has been found dependably in burnout enquiry, across an eclectic range of job-related situation
(Van Gordon and et.al., 2014). Burnout is a psychosomatic syndrome that involves an extended
comeback to lingering interpersonal stressors and tips to moods of pessimism and disinterest,
tiredness, an all-purpose sagacity of ineptitude, and can be seen as the attrition of commitment.
In addition to this, the fact that studies on burnout and workaholism are practically scarce is all
the more conspicuous because already 20 years ago it was suggested that workaholism might act
as a derivation grounds of fatigue as disproportionately and hysterically salaried staffs use up
their mental resources, leaving them depleted and “burned out” (Taris, Schaufeli and Shimazu,
2012).
Shimazu, Schaufeli and Taris (2010) has contended that the previously stated qualitative
revision on work engagement recommended that betrothed staffs not disregard their social life
outside work; rather, they devote time on entertaining, interests, and work as helpers. With an
assistance of this, issue can be resolved effectively. Work engagement is positively related to
sleep quality and job performances whereas workaholism affects negatively to sleep quality. The
unspoiled that was verified effectively in both lessons expected that exhaustion was harmful
related to health, while engagement was distinct to well-being problems. In addition to this,
Kortum Leka and Cox (2011) has said that psychological meaningfulness refers to the value of a
work goal about the ideas of an individual. Psychological meaningfulness is a strong predictor of
employee engagement. Psychological safety entails being able to show and employ one’s self
without fear of adverse consequences to self-image, status or career.

Factors that impact mental health of professional and organisation performance.
As per the view of Hu and et.al., (2014), it can be stated that there are number of factors
which need to be referred effectively by the organisations. It is because such kind of aspects
might affect the mental health of professionals. Classification of factors can be as long hours, job
security, relation with employer, terms of employment, resources and communication. If any
kind of such factor is having changes then it will impact the overall outcome in diverse manner.
It has been noticed that in many organisations the work hours are very high which impacts
negatively on professional morale. If individual is having working for many hours as compared
to his capabilities then it will influence the overall outcome.
Clark and et.al., (2016) has asserted that many of individuals faces issue in regard to
work stress due to job security. If job security aspects are not appropriate then it will create an
unsuitability for individual. It means such kind of issue is most common among temporary based
work style. Job security is not a critical issue for permanent professionals which reduces the
stress level. It has been noticed that if such kind of aspects are not properly maintained then it
will advance the stress among individuals. It will impact the overall morale which influences
work productivity as well. It means the overall performance of organisation will also be impacted
in negative manner. Christian and Ellis (2013) has also contended that work relationship also
creates an issue of stress management. If such kind of aspects are not properly maintained then it
will create negative impact on the organisational performance. In some of the cases, it has been
noticed that if employer and employees do not have better relations than employee does not feel
comfortable while working within organisation. Such kind of values also create stress situations
and impact overall outcome in diverse manner. In addition to this, it can be said that by having an
improvement in work relations the level of stress can be reduced in appropriate manner.
Along with this, terms of employment can also create stress level among professionals
which might affect the overall performance. It has been noticed that if employment terms are not
satisfactory for employees need then it will promote stress within organisation. Chan and et.al.,
(2011) has stated that in some of the situations the HR policies are very strict. For example,
holidays are not being approved as per employee needs which impacts the morale and create
stress among individual. If employee is having working with stress then work effectiveness will
also be affected in negative manner. However, such kind of aspects also influences the stress

level in negative manner which impacts directly on mental state of individual. For continuous
improvement, it is significant to overcome such kind of issues so that goals and objectives can be
accomplished effectively. Christian and Ellis (2013) has argued that factors like resource
allocation and communication also creates stress for individuals. If such kind of aspects are not
considered effectively then overall outcome might get affected. For example, company is not
offering appropriate tools to perform work activities. Such kind of situations create stress among
employees and influences their motivation level. By having an improved focus on such aspect
the issue can be resolved effectively. If employee satisfaction is not appropriate then it will also
influence the outcome of company. In addition to this, it can be stated that stress can be reduced
by analysing situations. Communication with management also need to be referred effectively so
that stress level can be reduced.
Relationship between workaholic culture and mental health of professional
Clark and et.al., (2016) has stated that workaholic culture and mental health of
professional has great relationship with each other. In addition to this, it can be said that in recent
years the ratio of psychiatric disorders has advanced in recent years. By having an improved
focus on work culture analysis. It has been noticed that due of high ratio of stress and psychiatric
disorders the professionals are not much able to remember things and important activities. It
reflects that workaholic culture impacts the mental health of professional. Hu and et.al., (2014),
has also asserted that level of stress has also changed the behavioural values among
professionals. It is one of key reason that professionals are becoming more aggressive towards
work so that they can manage work properly. If stress increases in such situations then it also
influences the level of anger. It reflects that workaholic conditions impact the overall outcome in
diverse manner. By analysing key aspects the issues can be overcome effectively so that long
term sustainability can be advanced.
Kortum Leka and Cox (2011) has contended that workaholics scored higher on all the
psychiatric symptoms than non-workaholics. It has been identified in the report of experts that
due to high level of stress and focus on workaholic values creates the issue of deeper
psychological and emotional. It means if stress is advancing among professionals then it must be
creating an issue of emotional state. By having an application of diverse methods such kind of
issue can be advanced. In addition to this, it can be state that overlapping genetic vulnerabilities

disorders leading to workaholism or conversely, workaholism causing. Shimazu, Schaufeli and
Taris (2010) has asserted that there are number of elements which need to be referred by
management in order overcome issues. Number of issues are mainly advances at the situation
where employee is prohibited from working. It has been noticed that such kind of elements also
impacts the morale in negative manner so that long term sustainability can be advanced.
Ways to improve control on workaholism, burnout and work engagement
As per the view of Decembrele and Lord (2008), it can be stated that there are number of
methods which can be employed by the experts in order to have better control over workaholic
culture. In this respect, management need to create better awareness among employees in regard
to diverse steps. By having an application of step like change in values so that key aspects can be
measured effectively. It is necessary for individual to ensure about key values that he holds so
that he can take decisions accordingly in order to overcome issue. It is necessary for experts to
make sure that employee is having a focus on peace so that overall aspect can be advanced
effectively. In addition to this, it is also significant to gain better knowledge in regard to work
activities. In many situations people at workplace feel stress because they are not aware of work
activities. It means by having advancement in productivity and information about activities so
that goals and objectives can be accomplished. It assists in overcome issues for sustainable
development. Jaremko and Meichenbaum, (2013) has also asserted that by having a focus on
setting out the limit on work assignments the issue can also be overcome. By having an
improved focus on the work assignment allocations the individuals can easily understand key
aspects. It is necessary for business firm to promote flexible working so that goals and objectives
can be accomplished in desired manner. In addition to this, it can be stated that by having an
improved focus on work engagement the issue can be overcome in desired manner. It is
significant for business firm to focus on building consistency of engaged employees.
Folkman(2013) has stated that engagement starts with each person and is subjective. Employees
don't check their personalities at the door when they come to work. Knowing that they are
respected as individuals at work can have a significant impact on how employees view their
overall lives.
In addition to this, it can be stated that company can also focus on employee engagement
survey so that long term sustainability can be advanced. It has been noticed that by having an

RESEARCH METHODOLOGY
Introduction
It has been noticed that research methodology is being referred as most critical aspect
which need to be referred effectively. It is a combination of methods which are being developed
at the scale to acquire evidences so that analysis of research questions can be taken into account.
In present dissertation, current aim is to analyse the impact of stress and workaholic situation on
organisational performance (Bhattacharyya, 2009). Research methodology is regarded as the
most important section since it delivers a pathway through which research outcomes can be
attained through using different methods and tools. Thus, the present study is a detailed
document that is being prepared to analyse the impact of stress and workaholic situation on
organization performance.
In this chapter, different methods of methodology has been taken into account. Methods
like approach, philosophy, etc are need to be considered effectively so that long term
opportunities can be attained in desired manner (Daniel and Sam, 2011). Certain techniques have
been used by the researcher for collecting data. Significant assistance has been provided by these
techniques in the analysis of the data which represents the views of the employees. It has been
noticed that key reasons behind selection of tools will also be discussed effectively so that better
outcomes can be attained.

Research philosophy
Research philosophy is referred as one of most critical aspect of methodology section so
researcher need to consider it in appropriate manner (Cassell and Symon, 1998). It allows to
have better information about the research nature so that goals and objectives can be
accomplished effectively. Research philosophy allows to have research accomplishment through
individual belief. There are basically two kind of philosophies which are being employed the
experts such as interpretivism and positivism. Interpretivism is generally employed by the
researcher to provide better support of his own belief. It helps in attaining information about
facts and figures so that goals and objectives can be accomplished in desired manner (Jollis and
Hussey, 2009). It is mainly useful while having an analysis of small sample size. On the other
side, positivism approach is mainly employed by the investigator to have evaluation of social
values. It means data can be gathered effectively from the social sample in order to meet
objectives.
The other categories of research philosophy are ontology, realism, axiology and
pragmatism. Specific research onion is prepared by the researcher for the purpose of showcasing
the types of research methods that are being used in the dissertation. Pragmatism research
philosophy accepts concepts which are relevant and it happens usually when they support the
actions. It also recognizes that there are many different ways for interpreting the things while
undertaking the research; thus there is no single point of view that can give the entire picture for
getting multiple realities (Panneerselvam, 2014). It states that Positivism and Interpretivism both
are two extreme mutually exclusive paradigms about then nature and source of knowledge that
aids in enhancing scope of the research study. As per pragmatism research philosophy, research
question is regarded as the most important determinant of the research philosophy.
Realism is another epistemological position which is related to scientific enquiry and its
essence shows that reality is truth which has an independent existence of the human mind. The
theory of realism states that scientific approach is useful in developing the degree of knowledge;
hence this underpins data collection procedure. Further, ontology is concerned with the nature of
reality and to a greater extent, it develops questions on research assumptions. This also portrays
the position that social entities exist in reality which is also concerned with external social
dimensions and their existence (Kumar and Phrommathed, 2005). However, on the other hand,

subjectivism holds that view that social phenomenon are created from the perception and
consequent actions of those social dimensions which are concerned with their own existence.
Axiology is yet another branch of philosophy that studies judgements about value and it also
includes process of social inquiry.
For present investigation the researcher has focused on interpretivism philosophy which
assists in meeting key goals and objectives. With an assistance of this, data collection process is
being accomplished effectively. It has allowed to understand the concept of workaholic and work
engagement. Along with this, it also helps in analysing factors that impact mental health of
professional and organisation performance (Clark, 2002). Interpretivism philosophy offers an
effective accomplishment of key goals and objectives. Interpretivism has been selected in the
research study as it is associated with the philosophical position of idealism and is also used to
group together different approaches. It is also important for the researcher to appreciate
differences between people because researcher itself acts as a social actor. Moreover, this
technique also specifies those studies that usually focus on meaning and which employ multiple
methods in order to reflect different aspects of the research issue. Further, researcher also
specified that it is being selected since it is based on naturalistic approach of data collection such
as interviews and observations. Thus, this is highly useful in enhancing the value of secondary
data.
Research design
It is referred as one of most significant aspect for overall study, it helps in effective
selection of tool so that research objectives can be accomplished in desired manner. By having an
improved focus on such aspects the level of understanding can be advanced in critical manner. It
has been noticed that logical values can be presented effectively by having an application of
design. Appropriate blue print of study can be also be taken into account. In order to have
effective accomplishment of present investigation, application of descriptive design has been
taken into account. With an assistance of this, collection, measurement and analysis of data can
be taken into account effectively. Descriptive design has been used because it helps in providing
answers to questions of who, where, how, what and when, which are associated with a particular
research problem (Bernard, 2011). By having an analysis of such values the objective of outcome
can be attained.
17
Document Page
It has been noticed that in-depth analysis of information can also be taken into account by
having an application of descriptive design. Along with this, it has been witnessed that
application of information is also necessary to consider because it helps in meeting key
objectives. By having an effective application of tools the business firm can have understanding
of the concept of workaholism and work engagement. In addition to this, to analyse factors that
impact mental health of professional and organisation performance experts has employed
descriptive research (Axinn and Pearce, 2006).
Thus, it can be said that descriptive research design is being selected because the method
is useful in obtaining general overview about the subject. From researcher’s point of view, the
subject is being observed in a completely natural and unchanged natural environment and it can
also assist the researcher to ascertain the reasons behind development of stress among the
organisational employees (Hakim, 2012). Stress has a direct impact on organizational
performance; therefore it is crucial for the researcher to showcase what is the basic reason behind
this development of stress. Nonetheless, Quantitative experiments are often expensive and time
consuming; thus this gives clear picture about hypothesis testing. However, on the other hand
there are no variables manipulated; hence there is no way to statistically analyze the results.
Research approach
Research approach is the way in which a researcher takes a study forward. This acts as a
strategy for increasing the validity of social research. By having an effective application research
approach the key objectives of the study can be accomplished in desired manner. There are
various approaches which are being employed by researchers such as inductive, deductive, etc.
Through application of deductive approach the appropriate consideration of quantitative values
can be taken into account. It means by having an application of deductive approach the key facts
and figures can be presented in statistical manner (Bernard, 2011).
However, for the present study, application of inductive approach is being referred by the
experts. In addition to this, it can be said that application of inductive allows to understand ways
through which stress level can be taken into account so that issues can be overcome effectively.
Inductive approach makes a research move from particular situations for making or inferring
broad general ideas and theories (Cassell and Symon, 1998). It means theoretical knowledge in
regard to the subject also need to be taken into account. Inductive approach has been selected for
18
Document Page
the present research work since it lies in establishing probability. The approach seems to be
beneficial for the researcher as that aids in sensing the problem that prevails in the existing
situation.
Moreover, researcher states that inductive approach is significant in organizing the
information in systematic and logical order. It is also the classification of information which may
be used in the research procedure (Budgell, 2008). Thus, according to that it can also aid in
framing optimum solution for the problem. Thus, from research point of view, it could assist in
reaching towards research aim and objectives. Since, it is a logical approach which develops
thinking and observation; therefore it is being selected for the research work. Further, it is also
imperative in terms of developing scientific attitude so that to reach towards aim of the
dissertation.
Data analysis
The most important section of the dissertation is data analysis in which data will be
analysed through Qualitative design. The basic two categories of data analysis are Qualitative
and Quantitative and researcher has used Qualitative design. Interview has been conducted from
the employees of company so as to identify the impact of stress and workaholic aspects on
organizational performance (Bryman, 2008). Qualitative technique has been selected as it is a
method of inquiry that develops understanding on human and social sciences. Thus, it is also
useful in finding out the actual reasons that causes stress among organizational members.
Whereas, on the other hand Quantitative research method is used to generate numerical data and
hard facts through employing statistical, logical and mathematical technique.
Thus, Qualitative is being selected because it also aids in providing insights and
understanding of the problem setting. It is also unstructured and exploratory research method that
studies highly complex phenomenon which are even impossible to elucidate with the quantitative
research. Thus, it can be said that Qualitative is being used for acquiring in-depth and thorough
analysis of impact of stress on organizxairon performance (Bhattacharyya, 2009). Thematic
analysis has been conducted wherein researcher has prepared charts, tables and diagrams so as to
showcase the findings of the collected data.

Sampling
On the basis of random sampling, sample size has been collected and 20 employees from
the organization are being selected for the research procedure. Interview has been conducted so
that to acquire information about the impact of the research problem on the study.Data collection
There are basically two kinds of data collection methods which need to be referred effectively so
that long term sustainability can be advanced effectively. In present investigation the researcher
has considered both primary and secondary data collection. In order to meet the objectives the
Ritz Carlton Hotel is being taken into account so that appropriate learning can be taken into
account.
In addition to this, it can be stated that primary data collection is referred as fresh data
and information which is being initially collected from researcher. It is a first-hand data which is
accessed from use of diverse tools and techniques of primary data collection. In this, methods
like interview, questionnaire, semi-structured, etc. Primary information was collected with the
help of questionnaire method which includes both close-ended and open-ended questions.
Questionnaire is being designed to take responses from patients who visit to NHS and suffering
from workaholic circumstances. It has been noticed that on the basis of collected information
from primary respondents the issues can be overcome in desired manner. Key reason behind the
selection of primary data collection is that it offers an effective outcome. It means accurate
information in regard to the research problem can be taken into account. It allows to understand
the workaholic situations effectively so that goals and objectives can be accomplished in desired
manner. With an assistance of this, better ways can be identified through which work stress
situations can be overcome in desired manner.
On the other side, secondary data collection is also considered as critical aspect so that
information can be attained effectively. By having an appropriate use of secondary information
the findings and views of different researchers can be examined in desired manner. In this,
researcher has focused on concept of workaholism and work engagement so that key values can
be understand in desired manner. Along with this, secondary information will also focus on
factors impact mental health of professional and organisation performance. It means different
literature written by experts are being analysed effectively so that goals and objectives can be
attained. In secondary data, diverse sources are being accessed such as journals, books,
20
Document Page
researchers, articles, newspapers, etc. Through secondary data collection the experts can
understand the relationship between workaholic culture and mental health of professional. Along
with this, ways to control workaholism, burnout and work engagement for reducing mental stress
can also be considered as critical aspect. The major challenge which encountered during the
study was taking permission from the management to allow employees to fill the questionnaire.
Moreover, issues were faced by researcher in regard to patient’s interview. It is because NHS
and hospital authorities does not allow to have direct interaction with patients. By having an
effective analysis of information the key goals and objectives can be attained in desired manner.
Validity and reliability
Validity and reliability of information need to be referred effectively so that goals and
objectives can be accomplished in desired manner. Along with this, it can be stated that it allows
to have effective delivery of findings and conclusions so that study can be accomplished. By
having an improved focus on validity and reliability aspects the issues can be overcome
effectively. In deliberation to the validity of the information detail in the report, initially precise
amount of reviews accessed in the literature review section and it also helps to underpin the topic
in more elaborate way. Along with this, by having improved focus on overall aspects the
researcher can easily attain better outcome. In addition to this the analyzed results of primary
data was also compared with the views and findings of authors and researchers. By having an
appropriate analysis of such aspects the authentic information can be gathered in order to meet
key goals and objectives. Questionnaire are also being designed according to objectives so that
better outcome can be attained effectively.
Ethics
In order to have effective accomplishment of research objectives, consideration of ethics
is essential. By having an effective reference of ethics the research problem can be attained in
desired manner. Confidentiality of members are being well maintained in order to ensure that
long term sustainability can be advanced. If confidentiality aspects are not well maintained then
it will impact overall outcome in diverse manner. It is significant to ensure that personal
information of respondents is not being shared with anyone so that goals and objectives can be
accomplished. Proper information in regard to purpose of study is also being shared effectively
with members. It will assist in meeting key goals and objectives so that better understanding can
21
Document Page
be attained effectively. Prior permission is also being taken from the respondents so that ethics
can be well maintained. Along with this, it has been noticed that forcefully data collection is not
being referred in order to promote ethics and ensure about key goals and objectives.
Limitations
There are various limitations of the study which need to be referred effectively from
management in order to overcome such kind of issue. By having a consideration of limitations
better outcome can be attained. One of key limitation of the present study is lack of time during
the analysis. It has been noticed that every analysis requires effective allocation of time. If such
aspects are not appropriate then it will impact the effectiveness of overall outcome. Another
limitation was cost as primary and secondary research also requires huge cost such as all the
secondary sources are not always free cost. Due to lack of finance the issues are being faced by
experts which has influenced overall outcome effectively.

the potential and enthusiasm of personnel. From the analysis of books, journals and scholarly
articles it has been identified that for enhancing the motivational level of personnel business unit
is required to conduct motivational programs, workshops, games and other cultural programs.
Moreover, it energizes personnel to a great extent and thereby maximizes both productivity as
well as profitability. However, employees of Ritz Carlton who visit NHS to resolve the issue of
mental stress stated that stress level is high. It shows that hotel unit fails to make proper
arrangements for increasing motivation and reducing the level of stress.
Along with this, articles published by different authors also present that conflicts among
the team members, issues in performing the tasks etc. are another main reasons that have high
level of impact on the motivation and stress level of personnel. On the contrary to this, 30%
personnel said that working environment of Ritz Carlton is not filled with the high level of stress.
Brief thesis prepared in the literature review section clearly entails that stress is part of working
life or situation. Moreover, now high level of competition takes place in the hospitality industry
of UK. Hence, with the aim to gain competitive edge over others hotel units place emphasis n
delivering standard or high quality to the customers. The reason behind this, customer
satisfaction and loyalty are the main key elements which helps company in achieving the goals
and objectives. Further, data evaluation also presents that some people feel stressed when they
are allotted with more responsibilities. Thus, by considering this it can be presented that 30%
respondents come in this category.

above mentioned aspect. On the other side, 25% neutrally agreed that stress causes to low level
of motivation among the personnel. Further, 5% personnel disagreed and remaining respondents
strongly disagreed with the statement presented above.
Interpretation: Outcome of survey is highly in line with the findings of secondary data
evaluation. Moreover, high stress has direct and negative impact on the health of individuals.
Moreover, mental stress when individual is loaded with excessive work and pressure. The main
reason behind this high stress level is that due to high work pressure personnel sometimes feel
difficulty in balancing both personal and professional life. Along with this, author defined job
stress as a psychological reaction which is given by individuals in relation to their work
performance and aspects. Hence, in accordance with such aspect job stress occurs when
individuals fail to make co-ordination between job demand and their capabilities.
Thus, such aspect leads high level of job stress among the personnel and thereby
influences their satisfaction as well as overall performance level. By considering the Herzberg
theory of motivation it be stated that stress and motivational aspect of personnel are negatively
correlated with each other. In accordance with such aspect, if stress level increases then job
satisfaction as well as motivation level of personnel affected in a negative manner. Moreover,
there are several which have major impact on the satisfaction and motivation aspect of personnel

include job security, working condition, work life balance, administrative policies, salaries, wage
and other benefits. Hence, one of the respondents of Ritz Carlton entails that due to facing
difficulty in managing the work line they feel stress. This in turn places impact on the
motivational and thereby productivity as well as profitability.
Moreover, employees make their best efforts and deliver high quality services to the
customers only when they are highly motivated. Thus, working conditions and policies
introduced by higher management or department have great impact on the performance of
personnel. Hence, high work stress may result into increasing rate of employee turnover and
absenteeism. For enhancing customer base and overall profitability aspect hotel unit or firm is
required to reduce the stress level of personnel by providing them with better working
conditions. The rationale behind this, employees are not in position to give their 100% when
they feel high level of burden or frustration.
On the other side, personnel stated that low salary and wage is one of the main factors
that have great impact on the motivational aspect of personnel. Moreover, when salary and other
benefits which are offered by the personnel are favorable then personnel perform activities with
the high level of efficiency. At operational level, motivational aspect of workforce is affected
from the incentive and other monetary benefits which are offered by it. Further, now individuals
are highly concerned in relation to the aspects of job security. Hence, due to this 10%
respondents do not agree that stress have bad or negative impact on the motivational aspect of
personnel.

Interpretation and discussion: From the assessment of books, journals and articles it has been
identified that employee’s feel less comfortableness while working with supervisor. Along with
this, such aspect also has direct influence on the creativity or uniqueness of personnel. The
reason behind this, when personnel act under a supervisor then they do not have more freedom in
relation to decision making aspect. One of the employees of Ritz Carlton presents entailed that
they are obliged to perform work in accordance with the guidelines or instructions provided by
the supervisor. Hence, by considering the views of individuals who visit NHS it can be stated
that they are not in situation to think and perform in an innovative manner while working with
supervisor.
On the contrary to this, 25% respondents entailed that supervisor plays a vital role in
creating or developing highly productive environment. Moreover, supervisors enable personnel
to carry out in the best possible way by preventing the level of mistakes. Along with this,
supervisors also enhance the efficiency level of personnel by resolving their issues and queries.
Further, by making continuous monitoring of performance supervisors assess deviations that take
place in employee performance. In this way, by taking corrective action or measure within the
suitable time frame supervisors maximize both productivity and profitability level. Hence, some

higher management that they are not is position to work for longer hours. Along with this,
overload of work also is the main reasons due to which mental pressure is faced by personnel.
Employees of hotel unit who visit NHS clearly stated that workaholic situation have high level of
impact on overall work culture. Moreover, when people feel high level of stress then it may
cause of high level of negativity at workplace. Moreover, usually colleagues share their issue or
problems with others and thereby affect performance level or aspects. Thus, Ritz Carlton should
work on such aspect for the development of highly effective or supportive culture.

considering such aspect it can be stated that workaholic situation and commitment is highly
different. In survey, most of the respondents belong from Ritz Carlton stated that they are
suffering from the situation of workaholic aspects. Along with this, employees of hotel who visit
NHS mentioned that they perform their work with the high level of dedication. Further, higher
response also shows that they are highly committed towards their work. However, they stated
that in the situation of excessive workload it is not possible for them to perform business
activities and functions with the high level of efficiency. Thus, by considering all such aspects it
can be presented that large number of respondents presented their views that workaholic culture
closely influences their performance. Thus, for enhancing the productivity and profitability Ritz
Carlton hotel needs to develop effective work culture.

Findings: The above mentioned chart presents that 35% respondents show that high work
load is one of the main factors which may cause of mental stress among the personnel. On the
other side, 40% strongly and 20% personnel of Ritz Carlton neutrally agreed with the above
depicted statement. Whereas, 5% respondents entails that situation of high load is not only the
factors that have major impact on the mental health of personnel. Hence, patients of NHS who
are the employees of Ritz Carlton clearly entail that there are several other factors which have
significant impact on the mental health or stress level.
Interpretation and discussion: By reviewing secondary data sources it has been
assessed that occupational stress usually arises from unexpected pressure and accountabilities. At
workplace, individuals are highly differing in terms of their knowledge, skills and potentials.
Further, by making assessment of study published in Personal Psychology it has been identified
that employees who feel high workload had high blood pressure. Along with this, it also has been
identified that situation of heavy workloads is also highly associated with the possibilities of
heart attacks and other health problems. Moreover, situation of high load has direct impact on the
mental health of individual. Along with this, high load closely affects the excitement and joy of
individual because they are not in position to spend quality time with the family members.
Excessive workload may result into frustration among the personnel which in turn ruin their life
to the significant level. For instance: Ritz Carlton hotel increases the timing hours of personnel
during the peak load. In addition to this, now company places high level of emphasis on
developing multi-tasking ability among the personnel. In this, employees are assigned with the
responsibility to perform wide range of tasks or activities. Due to having high level of
responsibilities employees are not in position to free on time. Thus, frustration in relation to such
aspect may result into high mental stress. Such stress level place high impact on the
motivational, efficiency and job satisfaction of personnel. This in turn places direct impact on the
overall productivity and profitability aspect of firm.
Further, occupational stress occurs when employees feel that their supervisors do not
support them. Moreover, individuals can deal with the situation of high work load easily when
they perform in a good team where each employee supports another. In this way, situation of
high workload can easily be resolved by the personnel through the means of effective co-
ordination. Thus, by keeping such aspect in mind 25% individuals said that high work load does

not enhance the stress level. Moreover, in the hospitality sector, manager places high level of
emphasis on team working with the motive to maximize both productivity and profitability.
Along with this, conflicts are common when individuals work in a team. In this, conflicting
situation between the colleagues may result into high stress level.

Findings: The above chart shows that 35% respondents are agree with this phenomenon that
situation of balance working is essentially required to capitalize the personal aspects. On other
side 30% respondents of Ritz Carlton Hotel are strongly agree with this concept as they do
believe that in working hours of the office there should be a balance. 25 % of the respondents are

completely disagree with this situation of balance working. Another 5 % have no impact due to
this condition, they are strongly disagree according to this chart.
Interpretation and discussion: in working situation the employee must have an equilibrium in
his work despite of his personal life. When the situation is not in balance the he will not able to
give some personal time for his family and for other things. Ritz Carlton Hotel have so many
employees as they do their job in different shifts, thus there is a lot of pressure on them during
the working time. As the pressure is increased the work may not be in successful state. Mental
stress is also a important factor for this situation, in the case of serve the good services to the
customers, an employee will always have the pressure on it. On the other hand he should have
the better communication skills to attain the better feedback from the customers. As the 35%
agree with this situation because they are facing some problems apart from the working hours.
They are capable to handle the personal and professional parallel as he is not getting over to the
issues related to their family and other.
Basically the person who have no problem or who are completely disagree with this
thing, have maintained their personal and professional work with an calibrated plan. Hotel
industry is full of competitors, so the management does always pressurize their employees to be
on the top of that industry. If the workload is quite high then the mental pressure will also get
high that leads to the high blood pressure, thus it may cause some health issue to the employees
and after that the quality of services can be affected. In the seasonal time of the Hotel, the
workload in on its peak so the timing hours does increased by the management of Ritz Carlton
Hotel. Some employees have to do multitasking apart from their designation when the most of
staff is on leave. In this situation the employee should have patience regarding their heavy
workload he have to manage a lot of responsibilities and due to these responsibilities the
employee is not have the access to be free on time. The employees who are on night shift
generally not able to sleep properly in day time, so frustration comes to employee and this
situation can be the reason for his mental stress. Motivation for job , an efficient working,
satisfaction throughout the job, these factors have impacted by high level of stress.

Findings: The above depicted table presents that 70% personnel of Ritz Carlton do not have idea
about what organization expects from them. Whereas, remaining 30% employees disagreed with
the fact that they know very well about organizational expectation and activities need to perform.
Interpretation and discussion: In the business unit, workforce is motivated to perform their
best when they have clear idea about the organizational criteria in relation to the evaluation of
performance. In the absence of having clear idea employees are not able to identify the bases on
the basis of which their performance is judged. For instance: in the business organization, each
individual feels that his or her performance is out of the box. In this, if personnel do not get
monetary rewards or recognition then it may turn into dissatisfaction. By considering this it can
be presented that personnel of feel dissatisfied because they do have idea about the evaluation
pattern or criteria. Thus, hotel unit requires to clearly communicating the base or aspects of
evaluation. This in turn helps in enhancing the satisfaction and motivation aspect of personnel.
On the other side, it has been assessed from investigation that by some of the respondents
presented that they have information about the criteria’s of performance evaluation.

Findings: From results of survey, it has been identified that 75% employees of Ritz Carlton are
not comfortable with excessive or long working hours. In contrast to this, 25% employees stated
that they do not have issues in relation to the long timing hours.
Interpretation and discussion: By considering the outcome of secondary data views of
respondents have been evaluated by scholar. Hence, literature review section clearly shows that
due to the long working hour’s people feels more mental stress. Moreover, now there is
significant changes in the lifestyle of individuals as compared to the before times. Now, people
plan parties with their friends and family members. Along with the professional aspect, social
life is highly important for the individuals. In this, if individuals spend more hours in hotel then
they do not have time to live their social life in the best possible way. Along with this, after the
specific hours employees are not in position to give their best. Hence, for maximizing the
productivity and profitability of personnel Ritz Carlton needs to make focus on setting suitable

Interpretation and discussion: Tabular presentation shows that due to having long timing hours
people are facing issues to a great extent. Brief thesis prepared from literature review section
entails that during the peak period or time personnel of hospitality sector have to work for long
time frame. This in turn closely affects the satisfaction or motivational aspect of personnel.
Moreover, employees are motivated to perform work for long time frame only when they get
monetary rewards for this. Thus, for enhancing the motivational aspect of personnel business
unit is required to appoint more candidates for different sessions. By this, business organization

CHAPTER 5: CONCLUSION AND RECOMMENDATIONS
Objective: concept of workaholism and work engagement
From this dissertation, it has been concluded that workaholic culture and work
engagement aspect is highly different from each other. It can be revealed from the report that
workaholic culture presents that employees are performing their work compulsively rather than
enjoying their work. Such kind of culture develops job dissatisfaction among the personnel and
hampers their performance to a great extent. On the other side, aspects of work engagement lay
more focus on developing positive image in the mind of personnel regarding the business
activities or practices. Further, in the case of work engagement business unit provides with the
easiest ways to perform task which in turn may result into high level of satisfaction among them.
It can be seen in the report that large number of employees of Ritz Carlton entailed that
workaholic culture affects their job performance, satisfaction and motivation level to a great
extent.
Objective: Factors that have high level influence on the mental health of professionals and
thereby organisation performance
Outcome of investigation presents that there are several factors which closely influence
the mental health of professionals. Such factors include excessive working hours, high
supervisory control and interference etc. It can be stated on the basis of respondent’s view that
employees feel uncomfortable when they work with supervisor. The main reason behind this,
when personnel perform activities under the close monitoring or supervision of higher authority
then it develops stress in the mind of personnel. Along with this, high level of supervision also
place high level of impact on the creativity aspect of employees. Moreover, sometimes
employees are compelled to perform activities in accordance with the instruction of supervisor.
This in turn negatively affects the motivational aspect of personnel. Further, in survey, most of
the respondents selected from Ritz Carlton hotel entailed due to high work load and excessive
working hours they feel mental stress. In primary data investigation, most of the respondents
presented that due to having long working hours they are not in position to spend enough and
quality time with their family members. Along with this, high work load is another major factor
that may cause of mental stress or illness among the employees.
