Reflection: My Role as Part of a Work Group
Awareness
We formed a five-person research team at the start of the semester. We were given a
research project to work on which covered five weeks. It was a nice experience working closely
with my peers. Working in term assisted me to learn several benefits and disadvantages of
working with a team. The first positive thing that I learned about working in a group is that there
is performance. This because work can be divided among the group members hence saving on
time. For example, when we were given a project to work, we divided the work in such a way
that each person had his or her specific part to handle. Thereafter, each person presented the part
that they have researched elaborating their findings in detail. Another important thing I learned
about the group is that they aid in skill development. Being part of a team assisted me to develop
my interpersonal skills such as speaking as well as leadership skills. On the other hand, I came to
understand that working as a team also has its drawbacks. For example, a team leader may
encounter some stress from the team such as time. As the leader of the team, controlling and
directing the team was not easy because sometimes I was frustrated by the team. On some
occasions I found myself losing temper. I felt that working in a group is one of the best ways to
gain knowledge. Being in a group increases a person’s socializing skills. We make friends as we
interact throughout the group activities.
Critical analysis
Working in a group has impacted positively on my strengths. I am a confident person and
frank in addressing issues. Therefore, being the leader of a group made it possible for me to lead
my group and address issues confidently. Moreover, I am a committed person which made top

act as motivation to the rest of the team (Loo & Thorpe, 2002). This made our group do research
and submit assignments on time. As a business student, I am not good at calculations as I am at
theory. Therefore, working in a group assisted me to able to tackle calculations and understand
the concepts that I was not conversant with. I am a temperamental person and working with a
group assisted me on how to manage my anger. Being the leader of the group, I could be angered
when the team failed to show up for group discussion or did not do their research. However, I
learned to manage my anger to manage group discussions.
Learning
In my future professional practice, I still believe working as a team is the best way to
handle tasks. As an employee, working as a team will improve how I relate with my colleagues
and increase the accountability of every member. Moreover, in the future, working as a team will
improve productivity and efficiency. This allows sharing of work hence reducing pressure on
people and ensuring that the assigned task competed within the given time.
