Short Exercise 3.
Quotations
1. Sweet soul music became the perfect accompaniment of Civil Rights Movement as it
made great social changes and orchestrated the upheaval (Guralnick 6).
2. Everything becomes insignificant when we sleep the big sleep and all that had mattered
fades away into oblivion as stated by Chandler.
What did it matter where you lay once you were dead? In a dirty sump or in a
marble tower on top of a high hill? You were dead, you were sleeping the big
sleep, you were not bothered by things like that. Oil and water were the same as
wind and air to you. You just slept the big sleep, not caring about the nastiness of
how you died or where you fell. Me, I was part of the nastiness now. Far more a
part of it than Rusty Regan was. But the old man didn't have to be. He could lie
quiet in his canopied bed, with his bloodless hands folded on the sheet, waiting.
His heart was a brief, uncertain murmur. His thoughts were as gray as ashes. And
in a little while he too, like Rusty Regan, would be sleeping the big sleep
(Chandler 178).
Chandler further notes that, he was part of a nastiness unlike Rusty Regan but what
remains is only for the time being until he too sleeps the big sleep.
3. He, no more had to escape as the police had already caught him but he was still unsure
what was he running away from (Himes 188).
4. Nerds are able to make friends when they find people having similar interests and
passion. Vowell emphasizes that Nerds are able to engage in conversations when are

allowed to talk about the things they fancy like she did when she was a teenager. I have
seen that nerds are usually introverts who often get repelled by small conversations.
Whereas, it can often be seen that they are able to pour their heart out in interactions
when they get to talk the things which arouse their curiosity (Vowell 188).
