Theme:1 Concept of workplace discrimination
According to Choi and et.al., (2018) discrimination in the workplace is considered illegal
behaviour towards staff whereas they are treated unfairly. Generally, discrimination occurs when
employer or organization discriminated individuals in respect of work associated decisions and
other issues like recruiting, firing, promotions and availability of benefits. Currently workplace
discrimination become major issue for all staff members who offers its services in corporate
sectors because it increasing day by day which has already taken a place of crime. The reason
behind is that most of the time employees are highly discriminate by senior authorities which
reduces wellbeing of them and influences them to committee suicide. There are various cases
that associated with workplace discrimination. Discrimination takes place within workplace due
to some reason such as when a female works with male in that state employer offers them law
salary as compared male staff to think that they are female. While in other case when a person
who keeps difference from other people in term of culture, language, race and generations that
time also they are treated unfairly by senior authorities. Discrimination with staff members are
mainly found in corporate sectors whereas they lead diversity within workplace to gain high
profitability in it’s business.
As per other perspectives Rumrill Jr and et.al., (2019) there are four type of workplace
discriminations such as direct, indirect, harassment and victimization. Direct discrimination
refers as a when a person is treated unfairly by management rather than other staff due to it’s
gender or race. In direct discrimination takes place when employee is discriminated work related
decisions, promotional policies and others due to nepotism. Harassment in workplace is also
another major issue whereas female employees are harassed by senior authorities. Such type
discrimination can be seen in many corporate sectors. If any organization suffers from this issue
then it is not good for it’s growth because it directly impact it’s brand image in the business
market. To eradicate workplace discrimination issues has imposed various laws by government
so that individuals can work free form and puts their 100% in their working so that organizations
can achieve it’s growth which automatically influence GDP rate of country. Still there are
various corporate organization that have implemented rules but unable to practices which simply
impacts on their business operations and productivity negatively.

However, Achim, Rusdi, and Amin, (2017) have been criticized for above sated fact in
their published research paper that there are various employees who takes negative advantage of
discrimination policies such as they directly ask for hike salary without any ability and threats
them to be filed case of discrimination. Thus, type policies often give negative impact on
organization image. According to author to eradicate discrimination from workplace is not easier
process. It requires effective managerial skills and appropriate leadership approach which can
deal with this situation and can develop effective strategy to maintain equality within workplace.
There are various organization which have taken initiatives of equality within workplace but they
have failed because it requires huge investment in to develop anti-discrimination policies against
discrimination which are available in different forms and needs high level management
approaches.
Theme:2 Several factors that influences performance of employees in Tesco
As illustrated by Mohammadfam and et.al., (2017)there are various factors that helps
organization to feel individuals valuable in the company and proves effective in eradicating
workplace discrimination. Factors are organizational culture, communication, recognition, social
environment, safety environment and others etc. major stimulant in influencing employees’
performance. For example, organization culture includes beliefs, values and ethics that makes
culture effective within company. The approach of organizational culture helps company to take
all initiative in employee welfare so that they can work confidently within workplace and
cooperates each other in any situation. if an organization posses’ effective organizational culture
then discrimination can not take place within workplace. the reason behind is that an effective
organization culture provides understanding about individuals needs and helps management in
leading job satisfaction in individuals by fulfilling their all needs. Effective communication is
another factor that also plays huge role in negotiating individuals to put their more efforts in their
working so that organization gets high level of success. When organization keep two-way
communication that reduces conflicts issues and influences productivity of working. In that
situation as well, discrimination never takes place.
Man, Zhu and Sun, (2020), has illustrated in his published books that recognition is
another negotiating factor that supports company to make feel valuable to their staff members by
offering rewards in the form of negotiation which builds sustainable relationship between
Document Page
manager and employees. If management of organization gives recognition to those people who
put more efforts in peak time to achieve short-term and long-term as reward in front of entire
organization that encourages them to give honest performance and motivates others as well to
give high quality working performance within company so that they become part of the
recognition reward. If organization keeps transparency in offering recognition that attracts other
talented people to apply for the job and retains exiting employees within company for long time.
Social environment includes respect, cooperative nature, teamworking and entertaining work
culture etc. are important for the employee because such environment influences them to stay
with company with long time in every situation either it is favourable or non-favourable. For
example, when employees get high supports from their senior authorities that makes them feel
valuable for the company and encourages them to lead productivity in their working. Respect
and relationship are two important needs of human being because it helps them to work
effectively and makes them feel comfortable zone. If organization does not maintain such culture
that reduces wellbeing of staff as well as make them less productive for the company. Safety
environment is essential for the employee because it leads high productivity of staff within
workplace. For example, when organization offers workplace safety from discrimination,
harassment and others that encourages staff to give additional hours except working hours to
complete their tasks. These all above factors supports organization to overcome discrimination
issues within workplace and motivates staff to achieve all goals and objectives of the busines
within time frame. Management of Tesco have practisize all above factors to minimize
discrimination within workplace and leads satisfaction in them for their job responsibilities.
Managers keeps fair treatment with staff members in decision-making process, promotional
policies and salary infrastructure that builds trustful relationship between employer and
employees and influences their performance within workplace.
However, Mohamad, (2019) has criticized of all above sated statement in their published
research articles that to implement all above factors effectively within organization requires
effective managerial skills and policies then organization can practice these factors for improving
employee’s performance. if organization does not have top level management then cannot get
advantage after implementing these factors. In addition, Tesco have practiced all factors like
communication, recognition, organization culture and others effectively to influence
performance of employees but it can not maintain for long time.

Theme:3 Relationship between workplace discrimination and performance of Tesco’s employees
As per the view of Coyne and et.al., (2017), relationship between workplace
discrimination and employee’s performance are inversely proportional to each other because if
organization has high level of discrimination within workplace then employee’s performance
cannot productive or may be directly impact on organization’s profitability negatively. if
organization wants that it keeps discriminative behaviour with some staff members but after that
they give more productive performance within company then it cannot possible from practical
aspects as well as theoretical aspects. For example female staff who offers their services within
corporate sector like make staff but after that they do not get any promotional opportunity as well
as fair pay structure like male staff that automatically demotivates them to work with other staff
within organization and resists them to give high attention within company. Khan and Rainaye,
(2018) has expressed in their book about Tesco issues which it is facing from last few years such
as gender and age discrimination claim. There are some employees who claims that organization
discriminates it’s employees due to their age and gender. In other word, some employees claim
on organization that it does not keep gender quality within workplace which causes they don not
like to give their 100% efforts. While another some employees claim that it discriminated
employee on the basis of their age as well.
Kensbock and Boehm, (2016) have quoted in their published books about Tesco
initiatives. For example, Tesco is MNC company that offers it’s products services worldwide so
it maintains diversity within workplace so that it enables to understand needs and demands of all
customer segments for improving their purchasing behaviour. Whereas most of the young
generation employees are discriminated within workplace while offering promotions such as
management offers promotion only those staff who have more experienced or has spent more
time instead of new comers due to age. So, Tesco discuss with staff to resolve this issue then
management of company takes decision to develop new employment policies wherein mentioned
all rules and regulation against ethical behaviour. Thus, company reduces conflict issues in staff
and negotiates them to put more efforts in their working and become more productive so that
they enable to lead more success within company. Tesco implements anti-discrimination policy
to ensure staff members that no employees are discriminated by senior staff due to their culture,
sex orientation, language, race etc. that maintain existing employee’s wellbeing and attracts new
talents for the job perceptive. Management of the company keeps fair treatment in decision-

making process, promotional polies, salary pay structure and others that encourages diverse staff
to develop innovative working environment so that it enables to gain sustainable competitive
advantage from it’s competitors. Thus, Tesco company establishes effective organizational
culture and influences employee’s performance by conducting training session as per the
workplace requirements.
Secondary data
To gather overall desired data uses various online articles, books, research papers and
many more are used as main secondary sources which helps in gaining valid outcomes in
efficient manner.
Identify problem in project
From the above discussion can be analysed that workplace discrimination has become
major problem for the world because it is increasing day by day that causes productivity of the
companies reduces that directly impact on GDP rate of countries negatively. So, workplace
discrimination is also become major concern for the top-level businesses like Tesco. workplace
discrimination is not only impact on employee’s performance but also reduces organization
performance in it’s market (Arshad, 2020). While discussing about workplace discrimination in
the literature review has been found that there are several reasons which causes workplace
discrimination takes place within organizations. For example, when senior authorities of
organization gives salary to their staff member based on their gender instead of performance
ability that condition highlights discrimination. There are most of employees who are highly
talented and puts their more efforts but after that they get less salary and does not get any
appreciation from seniors due to their gender that demotivates them and make them feel less
confident. This case occurs when management of the company does not practice their effective
managerial skills or does not keep transparency in decision-making process. Currently workplace
discrimination become worldwide discussion topic so everyone aware about discrimination, in
that situation if any organization have discriminated workplace then it can get various allegations
from employees and other parties. It may possible organization does not get contract or project
due to workplace discrimination because no investors or contractors does not want to deal such
organization which already has negative publicity due to workplace discrimination. Due to this
problem it may possible organization unable to sustain in competitive market because employees
Document Page
do not want to give hundred percent efforts due to discrimination. So, it is essential for the
businesses like Tesco needs to address this issue time to time effectively and achieves it’s all
projected goals within timeframe.
CONCLUSION
The brief study has provided understanding that workplace discrimination is the negative
element for the organization because it directly impacts on organization’s performance and
reduces employees working capabilities as well. Workplace discrimination also led negative
publicity of businesses which directly impacted it’s selling revenue and busines expansion. So,
businesses need to address this issue effectively and requires to offer equal opportunity to
individual which makes them feel more confident and motivated within workplace.
Recommendation
To improve employee’s performance within workplace should provide training and
development session to the staff member that helps individuals to improve their sets of
skills and improves their proficiency which makes their working more productive. So,
businesses like Tesco must implement this approach per four months.
If organizations like Tesco has maintained diversity within workplace then it is required
to practices anti-discrimination policies that ensures individuals that no discrimination
will take place or if any employee discriminated by other employees or staff then top-
level management gives quick response over it. Such type approach is not only make
individuals empower but also influences them to give honest performance within
workplace instead of discriminating other for their race, sex, disability, age and others.
360 Degree Feedback strategy is another effective approach that organization practices
within company because it helps to understand employee’s viewpoint for their workplace
(Theresia and et.al., 2018). in addition, top level management enable to address that
employees are discriminated or not. With the feedback approach Top level management
like BOD, CEO enables to maintain effective organization culture and makes feel
comfortable to staff member that anyone cannot discriminated them within workplace.
This strategy improves productivity of staff within workplace that automatically rises
demand of products in it’s customers.
