Our teamwork starts at 7 am in the morning. Since I am engaged in domestic
assistance, I take care of the hygiene and health department. Initially in the morning,
my job was to carry the used old clothes to the laundry for washing. Then the used
utensils were taken for washing. Since we worked as a team, we had different break
timings for keeping on with the work. My break timing was from 12 noon until 1
pm. After the lunch, we used to keep the things in places and help the old people
with their daily works. My departure time was 5 pm in the evening.

There were many tasks that were individually performed. I had the task of washing
the clothes in laundry, making them dry and keeping them in places for the use of
the old people. The health and hygiene of the aged people were maintained by
strictly following certain rules like changing the bed sheets everyday, making them
wear fresh and washed clothes everyday. There diet was also maintained and was
restricted to least oily and soft foods. This would aid them in chewing and
absorption of their food. Their rooms were kept cleaned.

facilities available to the people. Facilities like the pantry service, catering service,
laundry service, room service were present.

There are many practices that needs to be maintained for a safe environment for an
elderly person. There should be a fire extinguisher kept on each floor of the
organization building. Each aged person must be taughtthe technique of using the
fire extinguisher. Any kind of rugs should be moved from the rooms of the old
people and cleanliness must be maintained. Electrical cords must be removed from
the walking area.
The most common workplace physical hazards include noises and vibration, falls
slips and trips. Other biological hazards include bacteria and viruses that can cause
serious health effects. Choking is another hazard that the old people are most prone
at. They should be monitored while they are having their meals.
Emergency procedures include immediate response and referral to a hospital for
admission in case of emergency health issue. The community emergency medicine
clinician should provide the basic crisis support and brief needs assessment.
Emergency procedures must include excellent communication, mutual respect, clear
referral pathways.
What process do I follow
if I am unwell for work
placement?
If I am unwell for the work placement, I should immediately inform my teachers
and my co worker students. The team members should know about my sickness in
advance so that they can share my part of the job. My part of aged care if left out
might hamper with the daily living of the old people and affect their health. So, they
must carry out my work and coordinate the services with the older people.

Treatment of confidential
information
The confidential information should not be disclosed to anyone. Following this
strategy would help maintain respect towards the old people. Our behavior and
treatment procedures with the old people has made them rely on us and share their
private and confidential information with us so that they can get appropriate
measures and policies from us to cope up with their problem. We should maintain
the confidentiality of this information and should not discuss with others as this
might make the aged person uneasy and might not rely further on us for when they
require.

Overview of the tasks the
students will need to
perform
We needed to perform domestic choirs for old people living in community. All types
of household works needs to performed. Dish washing, clothes cleaning,
maintaining hygiene and cleanliness in the society and environment, cleaning of the
rooms, educating the old people to keep themselves clean, providing them with
nutritious and soft foods so they can ingest easily and also digest easily. The
students can support the old people in their view points and help them do with their
dressings. Brief exercise should be included in their daily routine to keep them fit
and healthy. The students need to keep the aged people engaged the whole day so
that they do not feel isolated and alienated.

There are many skills and knowledge that is required to be developed by us. We
must develop the mindset of working with diverse people with diverse perceptions.
We must be open to different strategies and adopting to those within the
organization to deliver best service to the old people. We should have the skill of
coordinating with all the people living in the society so that there is no
communication gap among the people. We should be aware of managing the legal
and ethical issues faced by the organization and the individual working members.
We should support and promote individual independence and well being. Safe work
practices should be maintained by the workers towards the client. We should
develop the skill of facilitating the empowerment of the older people. We should
focus on meeting the personal support and needs of the old people. Individual
service planning should be facilitated and delivered. The interests and rights of the
client must be prioritized for ensuring best service to the old people. The old people
who are at risks of developing certain ailments should be under utmost care and
attention. Person centered interventions must be implemented to avoid any kind of
health risks.

There are many other things that can be carried out to facilitate individual care plan.
The interests of the old people should be respected. Relationships must be
established between the client and their family members. We should personally talk
to their family members so that they can devote a particular time period of their
busy schedule to their elder group of people present in their family. This would
decrease the chances of developing depression and other related ailments that are
common to the elderly population. Family support and care is of the most important
parameter that affects the health and mind of the aged. Palliative care approach
should be established for each old client to receive best results. We should develop
and maintain networks among the workers of the organization and the family
members of the client.

I think I am doing well by adopting the methods and rules which are followed
in the organization and executing them in a timely manner. I am developing
my personal traits and punctual in delivering services to the client. Since, I am
in charge of the laundry department, I am doing good with this department by
carrying out the washing of the clothes, making them dry and keeping them in
places, changing the used bed sheets and the rags of the old people within
certain intervals of time.

I think I am shy and fear the option of rejection among the public. This fear
has made me to work independently without any consultation and collaborative

Did the first day induction cover the things you needed to know for this placement? YES
What else would you include to make the induction even better?
Time management policies and time frame must be provided for the task in the induction procedure.
Individual members of the team must be allocated individual tasks so that there is no scope of any type of
problem or issues later on while addressing the task. Every detail of the task must be explained to the worker
individually. All issues faced by the worker regarding the task must be addressed by the teacher to avoid any
misinterpretation of information or miscommunication. The training should meet the needs of the workers.

What tasks did you enjoy the most?
I enjoyed maintaining hygiene for the old people. They required that most in their daily activities. Any type of
contamination can lead to development of the disease. Fresh washed clothes and proper healthy diet are the
two most crucial factors for maintaining hygiene. Another part that I enjoyed the most was interacting with the
old people. I was able to understand their perspectives of life and other important factors that shaped it. It was
revealed that they wanted to be engaged in some activities or other that would make them happy. They needed
attention and appraisal for their each move.
What tasks were the most valuable to you personally? (They may not have been the ones you liked or the
ones you found easy)
The most important task was maintaining hygiene and providing soft food rich in nutrients to the old people
in correct time. They are required to eat their meals in correct time is adequate amount. Time is an important
factor for consuming meals. People who are prescribed with medicines must consume those medicines in
correct time to avoid any type of side effects of delayed medications. The foods must be strictly nutritious
and soft so they the old people can chew the food easily and digest it. Usually old people have weak
digestive system and poor gums and weak teeth. They also suffer from gastritis problems due to constipation.
Defecation must be prioritized for these people. It should be taken care of by the workers and accordingly
measures must be adopted to address this issue.

Do you feel you were adequately supervised? NO
How could the supervision have been even better?
I was not adequately supervised. The teachers could have used other methods for explaining the details of
task. They could have used visual methods, posters, presentations that would have a greater effect on our
mind. Every details of the work and their specific timings could have been discussed. The condition and
environment of the old people and the societal organization could have been discussed. This would have
provided us with the details of the scenario where we would work.
IMPROVEMENTS / COMMENTS
Overall, how could the work placement have been even better?
The work placement would have been better if the population targeted comprised of adults. Old people are
little bit difficult to handle as they are short tempered and wants perfectness in each case. Everything needs to
be done according to their perception. The old people are too strict and stick to their ways and perceptions.
They do not allow any change in their customs and perception. On the other hand, the adult population are
flexible and can be made to understand different ways of development and healthy living.
Would you recommend this workplace to other students for work placement?
Yes, I would definitely recommend this work place for other students. The old people are strict and adhere to
their ways and culture but are amiable. They students can keep the old people engaged. The students get to
learn new things and cultures from these old people. Maintaining hygiene for a community of old people is

also a type of social work. Students will be able to learn new techniques and adopt new measures and
implement them when required. Students will also be able to take decisions in emergency cases. This work
placement can help to maintain discipline in the lives of the student. Students will be able to learn to give
instant response to different situations in their lives.

The old people living in the society belong to different
communities and culture. There is a huge diversity in the
culture of the organization. There are many people who are not
able to talk or walk properly. For them, it is required to use non
verbal communication and aid them in their transport and
movement from one place to another. The difference in the
culture and diversity of the old people leads to
misunderstandings and miscommunications.
One old person has the habit of visiting the church every
evening to offer prayers. He needs to assisted in locomotion
from his home to the nearby church.
Another old person is not able to hear properly. So assistance is
required in the form of visual representations so that the
patient gets to understand.

Another problem faced by these old people is
forgetfulness. They forget where they keep their
belongings and cannot find them when they require it.
Our team provides palliative care for each person who is
in need. We specialize in coordinating the services with
the old people so that they do not face any difficulty in
their daily routine.

There are many ethical and legal issues which arises in
case of managing older people. The biggest legal issue
regarding the older population is their health safety. In
case of emergency situation of any kind of ailment, The
doctor needs to proceed with the diagnostic procedure
without the consent of the patient as well as family.
Another problem of ethics arises when any kind of
intervention is incorporated on an old person without the
permission. The old person might not allow the supervisor
or the worker to interfere with his personal life and
belongings.
There are many strategies that can be developed to solve

Older people are at high risk of contracting any kind of
bacterial or viral infection. The old people have a weak
immune system. They are also prone to develop breathing
problems and cardiovascular diseases. They are also at a high
risk of fall and fractures. The vulnerable older people are at a
risk of developing cognitive impairment or inadequate
housing.
Their diet and medications was given importance and
administered in correct time period.
They were made to wear clean and washed clothes everyday
to avoid any kind of contamination related infection.
The diet considered of fibers that would help them in
defecation. Proper defecation is another factor that is
responsible for maintaining good health of the aged.
