1SUSTAINABILITY POLICY AND PROCEDURE ASSESSMENT 5
1. Task 1 – Sustainability Implementation Report
1.1. Analysis of Staff Results and Achievements against Targets
One of the main targets of the sustainability policy drawn up was to make the staff
members of Grow Management Consultants aware of the importance and the significance of
sustainability measures and initiatives. The sustainability policy is not only aimed at assisting
in the conservation of the natural environment in Australia but also to make people in the
country, particularly those working for the company aware of the necessity of engaging in
eco friendly practices in order to ensure the wellbeing of the surrounding natural
environment. The policy has been successfully circulated among all the staff members who
are working at Grow Management Consultants including the four new members who have
joined the company very recently. It can be said that the policy is one that has been well
received on the part of all of the staff members right from the top level management to the
most junior of employees at Grow Management Consultants. All of the staff members agree
that the policy is adequate for ensuring environmental sustainability that it should be
implemented fully in order to help in the conservation of energy and other environmental
resources thus preventing a drain and strain on the natural environment. Staff members of
Grow Management Consultants have been proactive in making sure that lights are switched
off when not being used, that the use of bright lights is opted for, for the most part, that
fluorescent lamps are always used in the place of incandescent lamps and that energy
efficient heating and cooling systems, including the new air conditioning systems that
consume less power are made use of, for the sake of environmental sustainability.
1.2. Analysis of Energy Audit Data and Achievements against the Targets
When it comes to the use of electric energy in particular one of the main aims of the
environmental sustainability policy at Grow Management Consultants was to bring about a
Document Page
2SUSTAINABILITY POLICY AND PROCEDURE ASSESSMENT 5
reduction in the use of electric energy by as much as twenty percent within a period of six
months. An energy audit was carried out at Grow Management Consultants after the
implementation of the workplace sustainability policy over a period of six months and the
results of the energy audit are largely positive in nature. It was found that prior to the energy
audit being carried out, electrical energy consumption at the organization amounted to as
much as 18 tones year, with special reference to green house emissions and that the power
bill of the company on an annual basis amount to as much as % 2415. After six months,
following the energy audit, it was seen that the power bill of the company stood at $ 1800
annually and that green house gas emissions had fallen to just 10.2 tonnes a year. A
significant reduction was therefore seen in both the amount of the energy bill and the rate of
green house gas emissions signifying that the target of bringing about a reduction in the use
of electric energy by at least twenty percent within a period of six months is something that
Grow Management Consultants was able to achieve, upon implementing its workplace
sustainability policy. After a period of one year, however, another energy audit was carried
out and it was seen that the power bill of the company stood at $ 2215 a year and the rate of
green house gas emissions stood at 14 tonnes a year, which is still less than the figures of $
2415 and 18 tonnes of green house gas emission, which had been the case prior to the
sustainability policy being implemented. The slight increase in the consumption of electric
energy over a period of six months following the first energy audit can be accounted for by
the fact that the company hired four new employees in this period of time.
1.3. Recommendations for Additional Actions based on the Data above
Some of the additional actions that can be taken on the part of Grow Management
Consultants in order to improve its workplace sustainability policy is to opt for the use of
more efficient inverter units in the place of the existing air conditioning systems, to replace
halogen lighting with even more efficient lighting systems and to avoid using electricity for

the purpose of heating water and opt for the use of instant solar heating panels instead for this
purpose. The solar panels are one of the most important features of eco friendly living today
and are inexpensive to procure as well as easy to install. Grow Management Consultants will
be able to bring down its power bills by an even higher degree if it opts for the use of instant
solar panels in the place of electric energy. Where water conservation is concerned, all
employees of the organization need to be aware of the fact that taps need to be turned off
when water is not required and that all the wash basins and other areas of the organization
where taps are installed need to be surveyed and monitored on a regular basis to avoid
something as disastrous as leakage. The pipes in the bathroom areas will also be monitored
very frequently to make sure that these are not prone to leakage or wear and tear.
1.4. Summary of the Success of the Sustainability Policy and Procedures
based on Analysis
Based on the data given concerning the implementation of the sustainability policy and
procedures at Grow Management Consultants, it can be said that the sustainability policy of
the company is one that has been largely successful. The company has managed to bring
about a huge reduction in its annual power consumption, which is something that the
sustainability policy had set out to do in the first place. Although the company has ended up
hiring a number of additional employees since it put the workplace sustainability policy in
action, this is not something that has interfered with the goals of the sustainability policy. The
power consumption of the company is far lower now than what it used to be before, and each
every staff member at Grow Management Consultants is aware of the increasing importance
of eco friendly living. The necessity of conserving the natural environment of the country and
having a suitable workplace sustainability policy in place for this purpose is something that
has been successfully pressed upon all of the employees who are working at Grow
Management Consultants including the ones who have recently joined the company. As a

result, all of the people working for the company take the implementation of the workplace
sustainability policy very seriously indeed. The employees of the company, including the
members of the top level management are careful to make limited use of lights and fans,
turning these off immediately when not being used and they are also exceedingly careful and
restricted in their use of water resources, given how scarce water is becoming day by day
with lakes and rivers drying up around the globe. Air conditioning systems are being used
only when required as are heating systems.
1.5. Updates to Sustainability Policy and Procedures to Account for
Recommended Improvements
Some of the updates that can be made to the existing sustainability policy of the company
to account for the recommended improvements is to get rid of the existing air conditioning
systems in place at the company immediately and replace these instead with energy efficient
inverter units. The inverter units are capable of operating even in the event of a power cut or
a load shedding and will enable the company to keep the office space cool while engaging in
the reduced use of electric power at the same given time. The sustainability policy of the
company will also now include regular purchase and maintenance of solar heating panels that
will be used to heat water, and which can also play a vital role in keeping the rooms of the
office warm in the cold winter months. The halogen lights that are currently in use in the
different rooms of the office right now will also be replaced with light bulbs that are more
energy efficient in nature. While these may not be as bright and as powerful as the existing
bulbs, their use will lead to limited use of power and electricity, which is something that is
required as a part of the company’s workplace sustainability policy. The company will also
engage in the increasing use of recycled products by adding three more recycle bins to the
existing number of recycle bins and a green purchasing policy as well as a green
transportation policy will be adopted. For instance, staff members who reside in areas that are

close to the office will be encouraged to walk to office instead of taking a cab or a personal
private car in order to get to work, thus leading to reduced fuel consumption in the immediate
vicinity of the office.
2. Revised Sustainability Policy and Procedures
Grow Management Consultants is a company that will make a concerted effort to
engage in the use of energy efficient inverter units in the place of the existing air
conditioning systems in the different rooms of the office. While this may appear to be
an expensive move, it will help the company to reduce power consumption by an even
further degree than what it is able to at the moment.
Instant solar heating panels shall be purchased and installed in the office space for the
purpose of heating water. The company will refrain from engaging in the use of
electric energy for heating water even in the cold and bleak months of winter and will
rely solely on the use of solar panels to achieve this end, given how friendly and
beneficial the use of solar panels is for the surrounding natural environment.
While the halogen lights that are presently in use in the different parts of the office are
quite effective in reducing power consumption and are therefore excellent for
ensuring environmental wellbeing, efforts will be made on the part of the company
officials to locate lights that are even more energy efficient than the ones that are
currently being used. If located, the company will be prepared to make the substantive
investment that is needed to buy and to install such energy efficient lights in the
different rooms of the company’s office.
The energy efficient heating systems that are in use in the office now will be
maintained regularly in every three to four months so as to avoid problems such as

damage or wear and tear. The energy efficient heating systems will be replaced
immediately with new ones if seen to be completely worn out.
The company will engage in the purchase of three new recycle bins, to facilitate the
use of recycled materials and to ensure environmental wellbeing in turn. The three
new recycle bins will be bought and then set up in strategic corners of the office
space.
Staff members are to switch of lights, fans, air conditioning systems, heating systems
and taps when these are not being used. The importance of environmental
conservation and preservation is something that will continue to be pressed upon staff
members at the company.
Energy audits are to be be carried out in every six months to make sure that the power
consumption at Grow Management Consultants is something that continues to remain
at an all time low.
Staff members at the company are encouraged to make use of public modes of
transportation in order to get to work instead of driving to work, thus saving on fuel
consumption and fuel costs. Those who live in and around the vicinity of the office
should consider walking to work every day and back if their health permits them to do
so, given that this can go a long way in ensuring a cleaner and greener natural
environment.

7SUSTAINABILITY POLICY AND PROCEDURE ASSESSMENT 5
Hello all,
I hope this email finds you well. I am pleased to let you know that the implementation
of the workplace sustainability policy at Grow Management Consultants has generated very
successful results so far. We have been able to bring about a reduction in electronic
consumption by more than twenty percent within a period of a year of implementing the
policy and all our staff members today are more than just aware of the important and
necessity of environmental conservation and preservation, and are therefore fully committed
to upholding all the rules and regulations that form an integral part of our workplace
sustainability policy. Based on the success of the policy, we have introduced a number of key
changes to it that we believe will enhance the policy and make its impact far better than what
it is at the moment.
The first important change that has been made to our workplace sustainability policy
is the fact that we have decided to do away with the old air conditioning systems in the office
space and will have these replaced at the earliest possible instance with energy efficient
inverter units. The latter is capable of keeping the office rooms without consuming as much
electric energy as the existing AC systems are seen to do. The restricted use of lights and fans
in the office space will continue as usual, but the office will now make use of instant solar
heating panels in order to heat water in the winter months instead of electric energy. This is
also a move that we believe will go a long way in helping us cut down on the use of electric
energy.
The existing halogen lights are energy efficient but if we are able to locate lighting
systems in the market that are more energy efficient than these, we will not hesitate to have
them installed immediately. The workplace sustainability policy of Grow Management
Consultants is also going to focus a lot on the recycling of waste materials, thus preventing
Document Page
8SUSTAINABILITY POLICY AND PROCEDURE ASSESSMENT 5
the latter from getting absorbed back into the natural environment. The company is engaging
in the purchase of three new recycle bins for this purpose, at the earliest possible instance.
The workplace sustainability policy at Grow Management Consultants will also focus on the
implementation of a green transportation policy, with employees of the company being
encouraged to either come to office on foot if they live nearby or to make use of public
transport rather than cars in order to engage in reduced fuel consumption.
I hope that the key changes that we have made to our workplace sustainability policy
at Grow Management Consultants are something that you are all on board with, and that you
will give us the support we need to take matters forward.
With my thanks and best wishes,
James
