Key Terms
Mentor- A responsible senior practitioner who will mentor, assess and support the

The Foundation Degree: What is it?

To undertake this foundation degree, students must be in a social care work place
setting or working in a voluntary capacity within the sector. To successfully engage in
this work-based programme students must be able to evidence that their practice
can be aligned to the BASW professional capabilities framework. This is the
framework used in social work education for assessing social work practice.
Successful completion of this programme can facilitate access to a range of further
programmes of study that can lead to a professional qualification. Students need to
be aware that this does not imply or infer that successful completion of this
programme leads to an automatic progression onto a social work or other
professional programme. This programme is specifically developed to support
students who may be intending to work towards a professional qualification in the
social care sector.
Work based learning on the foundation degree
Students will undertake two work-based assessments of their practice over the
course of their study on the Foundation Degree in Health and Social Care. There is a
30 day assessment of practice in the work place aligned to the PCF and evidenced
in the WPET. The assessment of practice will be assessed by a work place mentor
who will be identified prior to collecting evidence for the WPET. During the students
second year on the programme a longer period of assessed practice will be
introduced. Students are not expected in their first 30 day assessed practice to meet
all of the capabilities in the 9 domains of the PCF. They will be expected to meet
these and add to their evidence of the capabilities in the second year.
During the placement students will gather sensitive information, and it is
essential that all identifying features of service users, including names,
addresses and dates of birth, are anonymised in the portfolio. Portfolios that
are not fully anonymised will be returned as a fail.
Mapping the WPET to Module Teaching and Learning. On the Foundation
Degree module learning is integrated into work-based learning. The

The role of the mentor in assessing practice: levels of performance’ expected
from the student and what tasks can be delegated to the student? (An
associate mentor can support you in the absence of your mentor).
The student will need to engage in focussed social care practice to evidence that
they have met the requirements of the Foundation Degree and the WPET. The
student must identify evidence in a timely manner in order that the mentor can
assess and verify the evidence. Following verification, the student completes the
relevant domain which can be found in the WPET document. Written evidence must
be cross referenced to the capability and must be signed off by the mentor. Informal
feedback should be given regularly by the mentor and associate mentors and should
be given in a constructive and non-judgemental way. We recommend that the
mentor provides formal supervision to the student. This should occur regularly at
prearranged times in a quiet environment free from the distractions of service
delivery. It may well be useful to schedule in formal supervision sessions to help
ensure that they take place on a regular basis.
