The writing style of the picture book is a verse novel
which is told in first person and in present tense. The
language is simple and lucid which makes it easy for
the young readers of level 2 to access the literature.
The character Toby is the protagonist of the picture
book who experiences trouble after the death of her
sister Leah. His mum and dad wants to leave the
farmhouse where they resided for many years. The
atmosphere of grief created in this book is
emphasised by the perfectly nuanced poetic devices.
Moreover, the narrative is very real like which helps
the children to understand the concepts of reality in a
perfect manner. In addition to that, the language of
the picture book is also powerful that easily conveys
the traumatic incident of Toby’s life and evoke
emotions in the minds of the children.
The teaching focus should be on three aspects of this
study –
a. Tenses – The present tense in this case
b. Verses – Poetic verses
c. The importance of language and social interaction
The primary aim of the teacher is to decode
the languages used in the picture book. The
children need to understand the text and
interpret the images simultaneously which
will help them to understand the difference

young readers as they find it interesting. An example
of rhythm from the text is “The start and stop of the
motorbike” in page 5.
Onomatopoeia – It is the word used in exact
resemblance of the sound for instance the sound of
hissing.
The text provides an interesting combination of
various poetic devices which helps in explaining the
text in a better manner comprehensible to the
students.
The teacher should design the plan
strategically and discuss different texts on
similar topics so that the students learn to
differentiate and find connections between
the texts. Moreover, the teacher should
discuss the texts with other students in the
class for encouraging critical thinking.

Overview of Leave Taking: Leave Taking is a touching story where the main character is Toby. After his sister’s death, Toby’s parents decides
to leave the farmhouse they have been staying for so long. The story reflects the emotional difficulties of Toby who finds it hard to bid goodbye
to the place he has always called home. They have to sort the things out that needs to be kept and the ones that need to be thrown away. The
place is filled with memories of Leah, his sister that made it very hard for him to leave. However, with the help of his best companion, Trigger
the dog, he starts to learn how to move on.
