Yours choice theatre application

Abstract
Purpose of the project has been to design the mobile application for a theatre which can help its
staff for booking the customer’s tickets. The design must meet at least the minimum requirement
specified such as booking tickets, getting an extension in parking time, print the ticket, etc. In
order to build the application, I have used Nielsen’s heuristic principle. As the output of the
application, I found that the design should be minimalist and every screen should contain only
the most important functionality. The prototype designed can be used for all the theatres to ease
the booking process for staff members. In the future, the app can be changed to have more
payment options such as paying through cash and option to get the ticket printed.
Introduction
The report focuses on the reflection of the design of movie ticket booking application named as
“Yours Choice”. For this application, some basic requirements were gathered and on the basis of
which the functionality of the application was identified. For the design of “Yours choice”, the
Neilson’s ten heuristic principles have been considered. The aim of “Yours choice “is to provide
its users remote movie ticket booking and some more functionalities such as parking extension,
ticket printing, and lost ticket printing. The staff member should be able to use this application in
the theatre itself to ease up the booking process. The ticket booking application should be used to
reduce the waiting time of users. There is Go-ticket platform which is built using cloud
environment where the users can get the ticket in digital forms and can use it for any kind of
event booking whether being music festival, movie or holiday booking (Block, Dicker & Steele,
2019). The movie ticket booking applications act to cover up the gap between theaters and
respective users. Before the advent of smartphones and internet, the user had to go the theatre,
wait in lines to manually book the tickets which wasted the time and needed the user to be
present manually at the booking desk (JAGANATH & KUMAR, 2018).

The user interface design of the application
The design of “Yours Choice” app has been made considering all the basic requirements of a
theatre application and by considering Nielson’s heuristic principle. To ensure the visibility of
system status, the application keeps on updating booked seats, new movies, offers, etc. the
language used matches with the real world. There are back buttons to allow emergency exits and
user control. The logo, description of the page, back and menu buttons and color of the text is
consistent in every screen. To eliminate the errors while paying through the card, alert boxes are
present. When navigating through screens of “Yours Choice”, there is no need for a user to
recognize anything because all the instruction and descriptions are clear. Every screen of “Yours
Choice” has been made by avoiding irrelevant information, for example, the screens have a logo,
description, back and menu button and only the major functionality in each screen. The payment
screen also has the option for saving the card information for faster payments. “Yours choice”
have screens like help, contact us and about us which provides help and documentation for the
users. Error messages have been written in a simple and comprehensive way.

How “Yours choice” meets user requirements
The basic user requirements of the application should be that the user must be able to login or
register with the system after which the user can proceed for booking the tickets for a movie. The

user should be able to view all the shows available, screens available and must be able to select
seats for a show accordingly. The user should be able to pay for the tickets booked by various
means such as card payments, cash or net banking. The users who book the tickets can extend
their parking by 2 hours for free. The users should also have the functionality of getting the
tickets printed and in case of the lost ticket. The design of “Yours Choice” meets the basic
requirements, for example, the application has a screen named as a Home page to navigate
through past bookings, parking extension and booking a show. The screen “Movies” shows all
the now showing movies, “Theatre” screen shows all the screens available and “Seat selection”
where the user is displayed all the vacant seats which he/she can book. The total amount is
shown at the bottom from where the user can move to the Payment option for paying the amount.
The screen “Parking page” has all the options present using which the user can extend the
parking by 2 to 3 hours. The screen named “Contact us” allows the user to enter the query or
feedback so that the application can be modified accordingly and made more user-friendly.
What factors influenced the design and how?
The most important factor which influenced the design was user requirements because an
application must always align to the user requirements. The user requirements define how the
application should perform which became the basis of design. The design has been made such
that it fulfills all basic requirements of movie ticket booking application. Restrictions in the
design included that it should not be inconsistent, avoid the error messages which are difficult to
understand. The other factors include Neilson’s heuristic principle which influenced the design
as those principles depict the properties of good design. Therefore to make the design better,
“Yours Choice” has been made focusing on ten heuristic principles. Other than that the main
focus has been on fulfilling business requirements that the application should provide remote
booking, ticket printing, and parking extension facilities. Competitors of the application who
influenced the design are flicks and Event Cinemas, both of the applications are quite popular for
movie booking.
Discussion on similar interfaces
The similar applications which have been considered for designing “Yours Choice” are flicks
(https://itunes.apple.com/au/app/flicks-com-au/id673861687?mt=8) and Event cinemas

(https://itunes.apple.com/au/app/event-cinemas/id299120285?mt=8). Both applications are
present on the Apple App Store. The design of “Yours choice” for screen “Theatres” has been
inspired by Flicks. The layout of the screen “Now showing” has been made by keeping in mind
the “Now showing” screen of Event Cinemas. The header and overall layout of the application
are similar to Flicks whereas positioning of images, placing labels and buttons, additional
screens such as Menu bar, past bookings are similar to Events cinema. The design of flicks is
unattractive as compared to “Yours choice” because the color scheme comprises of black color
only. “Event Cinemas” shows extra functionality at each screen which can confuse a novice user.
The application “Flicks” has the functionality which allows the user to watch the trailer of the
movie and Event cinemas provides a list of upcoming movies and pre-bookings for its users,
which are better than “Yours Choice” for providing extra facilities to its users.

Conclusion
The application “Yours Choice” is a movie ticket booking application whose design follows
Nielsen’s heuristic principles. The application has been influenced by its competitors, “flicks”
and “Event cinemas”, both of these applications are used to let the user book the tickets. users
can log in or register with them for booking the tickets for a movie. The user should be able to
view all the shows available, screens available and must be able to select seats for a show
accordingly.
