Title for the Global Warming Essay – “Global Warming – Human Race against Human Activities”

Global warming is a challenge, a real threat that needs to be addressed, not a conqueror to succumb to. We must take up the challenge. In this essay on global warming, we will discuss in great detail global warming and its effect on humans and the earth.

What is Global Warming?

Global warming is the long-term warming of Earth's climate system that has been observed from the pre-industrial period as a result of human activity, predominantly fossil fuel combustion, which increases heat-trapping greenhouse gas levels in the atmosphere.
Human activities are thought to have elevated Earth's global average temperature by around 1 degree Celsius (1.8 degrees Fahrenheit), a number that is currently increasing at a rate of 0.2 degrees Celsius (0.36 degrees Fahrenheit) per decade. Human activity has unmistakably warmed the climate, oceans, and land.

Causes of Global Warming

As per the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), the causes of global warming are increasing in carbon dioxide concentration in the atmosphere, depletion of the Ozone layer, deforestation, presence of aerosol in the atmosphere, rise in the sea level, burning of fossil fuels, mining activities, air pollution and increase in the population.

Deforestation and livestock are the cause of 80% of global warming. As it is said, "Everything leads to something else”. It's a vicious cycle: due to increase in population; deforestation becomes the major medium for expansion but deforestation causes global warming, which in return causes ecological losses, and as a consequence human lives get severely affected."

Another major impact seen due to global warming is the acidity of surface ocean waters that have surged by around 30% since the beginning of the Industrial Revolution.  This rise is due to humans spewing more carbon dioxide into the atmosphere, which is then absorbed by the ocean in excessive amounts.

The increase in temperature is also due to stuck of Greenhouse Gases in the earth surface resulting in extreme temperature increase. Carbon dioxide, methane, and ozone are examples of greenhouse gases that trap the sun's radiation. This effect works as a natural "blanket," preventing heat from leaking into the cosmos.

Sulfate Aerosols is another gas emitted into the atmosphere. Global warming from sulfate aerosols occurs naturally, due to volcanic eruptions.

As there is a high demand for electrical products in the market and so the need of the electricity. But the production of electricity is directly proportional to the emission of Carbon dioxide gases. Approximately 40% of the emission of carbon dioxide is released from burning fuel while producing electricity.

Also, the carbon dioxide released from gasoline accounts for approximately 33%. Every day, the population is growing at an enormous rate and there is a substantial demand and use of fossil fuels for the supply chain management.

Due to the growth in the population in the 20th century, an increase in the demand for food products results in more utilization of chemical fertilizers to increase the quantity of the crops. The chemical fertilizer contains nitrogen for increasing the fertility of the crop. Nitrogen when combines with Oxygen it forms Nitrogen Oxides that release a high amount of heat approximately 300 times more than the release of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere, thereby harming the atmosphere as well as the health of human beings.

Another toxic gas that is a major cause of global warming is Methane Gas which emits from animals, Arctic sea beds, and the agricultural field. This gas is released when the Organic products are atomized to create the bacteria for the anaerobic decomposition. This process also takes place in the digestive systems of various animals especially; herbivorous animals.

A chemical known as black carbon is generated from human activities and its impact on climate change like Pollution from the industries, emission of smoke from automobiles, Biomass fuels, burning of fuels, or coals, etc. The atomic particles in the black carbon absorb the sunlight resulting in the heat in the atmosphere, thereby increasing global warming or the change in the climate.

If we humans didn’t develop a sense of emergency needed right now then in no time we will move towards the extinction of life.
Now let’s see how global warming is impacting the earth and lives.

Impact of Global Warming

The main adverse effect of Global Warming is the rise in sea levels due to the melting of ice in the Antarctica and Greenland regions. The rise in sea level results in floods, unseasonal rainfall, and extreme heat and cold of which we hear news daily. More frequent wildfires, prolonged drought periods in some areas, and an increase in the number, duration, and severity of tropical storms are all possible future repercussions of anthropogenic climate change.

Facts and Figures to prove Global Warming is no longer prediction it is happening right now

  • As of July 2021, the CO2 concentration in our environment is 417 parts per million which indicate that there are 417 carbon dioxide particles in a million particles of air. Too much atmospheric concentration of CO2 causes the Earth to get substantially warmer. This indicates a major environmental issue for our climate.
  • 2020 was the second-hottest year on record, with average global temperatures 1.76 degrees F (0.98 degrees C) higher than the 20th-century average.
  • Droughts, floods, heatwaves, extreme weather events, and sea-level rise are all repercussions of global warming that adversely affect 11% of the world's population accounting for 800 million people.
  • The mass of the Greenland and Antarctic ice sheets has shrunk. Greenland lost an average of 279 billion tonnes of ice every year between 1993 and 2019, according to NASA's Gravity Recovery and Climate Experiment, while Antarctica lost roughly 148 billion tonnes per year.
  • For the past few years, the average temperature has been steadily rising by 1.5 degrees Celsius which in return causes a rise in global sea level at a rate of 3 inches per year. However, if global emissions do not slow, temperatures could rise above three degrees Celsius by 2100, causing permanent damage to our ecosystems.
  • Over the last several decades, both the extent and thickness of Arctic sea ice have significantly decreased at the rate of 13 per cent per decade. the Arctic Ocean is predicted to be ice-free in the summer by or before mid-century.

Solution for Global Warming

Though the situation has slipped from our hands it can still be put under control. Today we are in a situation if we don’t find the right solutions then the whole globe will face its consequences. And to do so will it demand substantial changes in every facet of society.
Climate change is demolishing our chances of achieving long-term sustainability. Ours is a world filled with looming threats and dwindling resources. Sustainable growth provides the finest opportunity for us to correct our direction.

“Join Hands Together to overcome the Global warming issue”

The globe is on the verge of approaching a tipping point wherein climate change will become irreversible. Fighting Global Warming is not an act of a single individual. It requires human collaboration or maybe the whole world to confront this issue. Every human should pay their contribution to saving the world. Research and scientific study has warned humankind that if greenhouse gas emission keeps on increasing with the current pace, then in no time we will head on the path of extinction.

Barack Obama, Former US President said, “We are the first generation to feel the effect of climate change and the last generation who can do something about it.”

The great physicist of the century Stephen Hawking said "From space, one can see how the human race has altered the Earth. Almost all of the available land has been deforested and is currently being used for agricultural or urban expansion. The polar ice caps are melting, while desert areas are expanding. The Earth is no longer dark at night, but massive sections are lit up. All of this demonstrates that our exploitation of the biosphere has crossed a threshold. Human wants and expectations, on the other hand, are increasing all the time. We can't keep polluting the climate, poisoning the oceans, and depleting the land. There aren't any more left."

How an Individual can help fight Global Warming?

Every human on this planet has to do their part to bring the adverse effect of global warming to its knees. As an individual, cut down your consumption and waste and move toward a sustainable way of living. Cut down your energy requirements and move towards renewable sources of energy. As a citizen, use more of public transport which will help in reducing congestion and pollution, minimize the use of plastic. Plant more and more trees. The timeframe for finding global answers is shrinking. Only by collaborating and in agreement might we be able to develop adequate interventions.

Role of Government in controlling Global Warming

Seeing the nature of global warming as a complex and long-term problem, an individual or group of people would not be able to address this gigantic issue alone. Hence Government should step in to address the issue.

The Government both local as well as central should make the proper laws on how to prevent the results of global warming throughout the world. Government should promote climate change awareness in the community. Government should design and implement policies, investment acts, programmes to mitigate the risk and achieve an efficient and effective outcome. They should also initiate incentives to draw more awareness toward the issue. Moreover, they should regulate the emission of harmful gases and should fine large sums for violating the law.

Not only this all the countries in the world should come together to regulate and make policies to curb the global warming impact.

What Business can do to reduce Global Warming?

Businesses must bring new technologies and methodologies on how to use the resources sustainably and at the same time keep a check on the emission of harmful gases in the atmosphere.

Businesses can join hands forming communities by providing sufficient funds so that the right action can be adapted for Global Warming. They should take steps on their own and show the volunteer to reduce the emission of carbon gases in the atmosphere. The benefit of stepping forward with volunteer power is that neither the business nor the government will depend on each other for the funds or the programs that require economically high funds to fight global warming and climate change.
In the Whitehouse, it has been announced in Aug 2015 the series related to the regulations need to follow to address the issues of global warming. Also, businesses have taken active participation in removing the greenhouse effect or global warming from around the world.

This essay on global warming has been written to scrutinize the impact of global warming on the environment and highlight the major issues for the gradual increase of global warming. In the most basic terms, a person who denies it or is unaware of it is complicit. Is there a planet for us to live on? Unfortunately, we have been given only one planet capable of supporting life, and we have turned a blind eye to its misery over the years. Global warming is not an abstract concept; it is a real-world event that is unfolding slowly even now.
The whole point of this global warming essay lies in the fact that our planet is embedded with powerful capabilities and nature in itself possesses the healing power. Our planet will heal if we humans stop intervening in its natural process
