The six principles of support in health and social care are applied to ensure maximum convenience and
protection of service users without affecting their dignity and autonomy.
Maintenance of privacy
Privacy of service users and confidentiality of their personal details are to be maintained
As Jo, in the given case, is aware of health issue of Angela’s mother, Jo needs to keep such
information confidential to reduced possibility of humiliation for the individuals
Value uniqueness of individual
Each individual’s distinctive features are to be
accepted and respected
The moderate learning disability of Angela
should not be pointed out as a handicap
Parents of Angela, especially her mother needs
to be given give due credit for supporting and
empowering Angela
Value the choices and independence of service user
To promote independence of individuals, valuing their choices is essential
Angela’s choice of starting her own life is to be respected by care givers
Possible support is to be availed to Angela to function autonomously and fulfil her choices (Douglas et al. 2014)
Health care personnel might sometimes face ethical dilemma regarding whether to support client’s choice or ensure their
security
Ensuring clients’ security, while adhering to their choices in harmless manner is essential for caregiver.
Responsible practice to support each individual
Both Angela and her parents needs support in given situation
Support is to be customised as per needs of each individual
Angela’s mother is to be provided scope for relaxation by assigning a secondary
care giver by health and social care service (Ccpdignity.co.uk, 2017)
Care giver needs to be considerate of vulnerability of Angela’s father for being
dependent upon others
