History and cultural importance
Basketball is one of the most popular sporting events in Australia. It has attracted
numerous sports lovers of the country. This report will analyze the various aspects of this sports
and analyze how it has become very much intertwined in the lives of the common people in the
country (Scanlan, Dascombe and Reaburn 2014). The development of basketball has begun after
Australia put up a very disappointing show in the 2012 London Olympics and most of their
players had failed very miserably.
The sports management of the country has been very problematic for the country like
basketball, swimming and other sports. The cultural factors and role of the government will be
judged in this paper for better understanding in various ways. It is a game i.e. played in both
indoors and outdoors in the country (Scanlan, Dascombe and Reaburn 2014). According to the
surveys, one person among three has extreme importance in the basketball game. In Australia,
this game is played by one million men and women across the country approximately.
This game is definitely very popular and research studies have conveyed that basketball
is basically the second maximum team participation sport while cricket remains the first. The
golden age of basketball is ranged from the mid 1980s to the mid 1990s. This was the time when
the National Basketball league of Australia was at its peak time. This had motivated many
Australians to join the game also.
Still, it must be pointed out that the media attention and popularity of the game had
dropped down in the 20th century (Scanlan, Dascombe and Reaburn 2014). There was very
limited corporate support for building the infrastructure of the game also. It has to be said that
basketball was the most popular and celebrated sporting event in the province of Victoria.

According to the annual report of the Basketball Australia, it can be found that the
athletes of different levels including the Boomers have taken part in the Opals Asia Cup in their
continent. The Boomers acquired the Commonwealth Games gold medal spot. The sporting
event of basketball has catered to the development of the communities that are socially cohesive
in Victoria. The disability programs through basketball like VicHealth Cup, Junior United
Mentoring Program and All-Abilities Tournaments have been quite successful. Various tiers of
the government would look to provide the Victorian province to develop their ionfrasttructures
properly.
Government analysis
The commonwealth government of Australia has a huge role to play in bringing back the
lost glory of the Australian basketball. The Chief Executive Officer of Basketball Australia Larry
Sengstock has very recently granted an amount of $300,000 for the development of the
Australian basketball (Noel, Xuan and Babor 2017). This is definitely a very crucial moment if
the recent deterioration in the performance of Australian basketball team can be highlighted.
According to the several critics, it is confirmed that this process of reform will definitely add
colors to the development of the infrastructures and facilities to the players so they can take their
game to higher levels (Deans et al. 2016).
The government has also added a High Performance General Manager so he can address
all the challenges in the growth of the sports and take necessary actions to curb it down properly.
It is the responsibility of the Federal Government of Australia to take all the necessary steps that
would re-energize the growth of this sporting event in Australia. It has been said for a long time

that it was a part of their long term strategic plan that they would grant more money for the
overall development of the sports. The entire infrastructure, the salaries of the players and all
those important things would be discussed to make the condition better and raise the hope that
this situation can be made better ultimately (Macdonald and Burton 2015).
The Federal Government and the local government together are trying to make the
situation better through implementing the diverse team cultures within their society. The
association of the basketball has been trying their ever best to speak to the minister and find
some way out to implement them as their strategy. The Australian Sports Commission is trying
their best to make the best out of this situation (Pomfret 2016). They are always looking forward
to get the maximum support from the Federal Government in terms of more grants to improve
their training facilities in all the ways. They have communicated their objectives to the
secretaries of the concerned organizations of the Government (Morgan and Taylor 2017). The
Government is also very keen to come to a feasible solution of this matter. Though they get the
funding from the Government, this additional funding will indeed be very helpful for the
Basketball Australia also.
The Government along with the provincial government o Victoria is trying their best to
cope up with this situation. They are continuously in talks with several corporate houses so they
can arrange some funding for the local teams. The association has revealed that around 600,000
people in the country are associated with playing this game (Schaeperkoetter 2017). Therefore,
they will need a stronger strategic objective to cater to the needs of their development. Victoria is
called the basketball capital of Australia. They are also trying with their best efforts so they can
create a win-win situation for themselves as well as the basketball clubs of the country. The
Labor Government had been elected again at Knox and they will make the proper settlements

through which basketball game can be expanded massively in the various regions of the
province.
The Victoria provincial government at Knox would look to make the developments very
clear in their national women’s volleyball team. In order to do this, they will arrange some latest
training sessions and take the help of the video analysis so it can help their people completely.
They are also planning to make 10 community courts that would help them to train more players
in all age-based divisions. These are the processes that the government is taking to revive the lost
glory of Australia in basketball in future years.
