MASTERS BY COURSEWORK THESIS ASSESSMENT CHECKLIST
The assessment elements below are some of those that should be considered in the examination
of the thesis. As an examiner you are at liberty to vary these to suit the thesis you are examining,
but please clearly indicate any changes in your report. A tick in a column indicates your rating
of the elements of the thesis; column headers indicate a sliding scale from 1 to 5 where 1
indicates the lowest level (i.e. the candidate does this poorly) and 5 the highest level (i.e. the
candidate does this well). Please tick the boxes where appropriate indicate a numeric score. A
copy of this checklist will be provided to the candidate with a copy of your written examiners'
report.
Research question and aims 1 2 3 4 5 N/A
Is there a clear and well developed research question?
Are the aims of the thesis realistic and achievable?
Do the aims of the thesis allow the research question to be
addressed?
Are key terms clearly explained?
How well does the thesis deal with any problems or constraints
in relation to the development of the research question/aims?
Does the first chapter clearly set out for the reader what to
expect in the rest of the thesis?
Is the significance of the study clearly justified and defensible?
Poor examples would be complicated questions that are difficult to understand or confusing, aims
that are really methods, significance that is poorly argued, etc.
Literature review 1 2 3 4 5 N/A
Is the literature used in the thesis relevant and appropriate to
the research?
Is the literature used in the thesis comprehensive and up-to-
date?
Does the thesis present a critique (critical review) of this
literature that justifies the research being undertaken?

Does the literature review demonstrate the relevance of the
literature cited to the research question and aims?
Poor examples would be a chapter that simply described the literature, didn’t guide the reader or
construct an argument from the points in the relevant literature. If you didn’t know why you were
reading something, then this would be a clue
Methods 1 2 3 4 5 N/A
Are all of the methods fully described clearly?
Are the methods appropriate?
