A Case Study on Implementation of Prince2 Methodology_1

Organization AIntroduction: Organization A is a manufacturing organization that manufactures high techmemory chips. It is headquartered in USA and has 2100 people working for it. The objectiveof the organization is to develop new markets in North and South America. The organizationis already using Capability Maturity Model Integration (CMMI) for managing is IT and hasreceived a certification for the same. The company is now in the growing phase and isexpecting more IT projects coming their way. To management these projects better, theorganization wishes to adopt a professional project management methodology considering thevariety of benefits they have to offer. However, while adopting a new methodology in theorganization, the company is likely to face many challenges that the company would need toovercome. This report would explore those challenges and adapt to the new methodology[ CITATION Com152 \l 16393 ].Proposed Methodology: Considering the fact that the company already has CMMIcertification, it has a process already set for managing its IT projects. Thus, if the companyhas to adapt to a new process, the new methodology needs to be able to complement this andeasily integrated with the CMMI processes. The adoption of new methodology should notresult into conflicts in management while integrating the two methodologies. PMBOK is amethodology that is easily adapted for any IT projects and as it is a guideline, it can easily beintegrated with any other existing methodology that an organization may be using. On theother side, PRINCE 2 is a framework which would need adoption of a new culture and itcannot be integrated easily with the CMMI methodology. Thus, PMBOK has been chosen asthe right methodology for the Organization A [ CITATION Pet14 \l 16393 ]. Organization BIntroduction: Organization B is into a construction business and mainly works ongovernment infrastructure projects from European region. It has 300 employee working for itand the company is headquartered in Paris, France. The company wants to increase thenumber of projects it is taking. The Director of the organization wants its team to present abusiness case for every project under consideration so that right projects can be selected forthe growth. However, this needs the organization to have a proper framework for projectmanagement. Currently, the company is only following the Euro codes for its constructionwork and have no other formal standard. If the company can adopt a project managementframework, it would be able to use the same for planning, executing, and controlling itsconstruction projects in an organized way which would help improve the project performance[ CITATION Com152 \l 16393 ].Proposed Methodology: The organization has never adopted any formal framework formanaging its projects and thus, it has no people who could be aware about how projectmethodologies work. In such a case, the organization would need a framework that comeswith an extensive usage guideline which can make it easy for the teams to follow and adapt.PMBOK provides a very exhaustive guideline for project management and thus, can be used

here. PRINCE 2 would make a more complex methodology that would be difficult for thefirst time users to understand [ CITATION PMI10 \l 16393 ].Organization CIntroduction: Organization C is an 11 year old financial services organization located inAustralia and has 800 employees working for it. The company already has rich experience ofdelivery services and has attained a level of maturity. However, the organization needs toimprove its project delivery capabilities for which it is looking for a professional projectmanagement framework. Currently, the company makes use of Regulator PerformanceFramework that has been defined by the Australian Prudential Regulation Authority. Whilemanaging projects, the company gives complete authority to the project managers and thus, they have a structure supportive for adopting any project management methodology fromPMBOK and PRINCE 2[ CITATION Rut06 \l 16393 ].Proposed Methodology: The organization already uses a project management methodologywhich only needs an enhancement in terms of its capabilities. A way to do this is adopt thebest practices of project management that can be used for enhancing performance ofcompany projects. PRINCE 2 framework can provide guidance on best practices as well ascan be adopted easily for the company through tailoring. PMBOK on the other side wouldmake more exhaustive project management methodology that may not be needed as theorganization is already mature enough to handle projects [ CITATION Fer11 \l 16393 ]. The would be able use the methodology to formalize its project management process. Theprojects would be managed in five stages including start-up, initiation, control, stageboundary management and project closure. In the first stage, all the needed information forthe project plan development would be collected and using the same, an initiation documentwould be prepared. This document would be approved by the management after which workpackages would be identifies and a plan would be developed [ CITATION Tur121 \l 16393 ]. A control process would also be established at this stage. In the next sage, boundaries of eachstage would be identified and managed. The last stage of this project management approachis project closure in which the final delivery of the project is made and a closuredocumentation is done which includes lessons learned document, project review report, andproject acceptance. Once the project deliverables are accepted by the client, a final sin-offwould be done by the project owner which would mark its completion [ CITATION Dav122 \l16393 ].

ImplementationOrganization AImplementation of PMBOK project management methodology would require anunderstanding of the knowledge areas defined in the guide. It would also need exploration ofthe 47 processes that are covered in the guide. To gain this understanding, a project managercan have discussions with the staff and identify what processes should be used for theorganization projects. Once the project manager is able to identify the needed activities thatwould be adopted, a detailed plan for managing the project would be created. As theorganization uses CMMI methodology already, the processes would be chosen based on theexisting framework so that the integration between CMMI and PMBOK can be made smoothwithout any conflicts [ CITATION Mic141 \l 16393 ].Organization BPMBOK is more of a guide than a methodology and thus, it does not have specific steps toimplement. It has ideas and principles that can be used for managing projects for the betteroutcome. It has a global library that includes best practices to study. The processes defined inthe guide can actually be customized to deal with the current needs of the real estateorganization.Figure 1: PMBOK Processes [ CITATION Ric151 \l 16393 ]The guide would have an inventory of project activities that would be executed in differentstages of the project management including initiation, planning, execution, control andproject closure. These stages would have activities around 10 knowledge areas each of those
