Introduction
Darug is a nation in the Australia where indigenous Australian people live and share
strong ties of kinship. This nation is divided into “number of woodland clans” all that lives in a
certain areas. Australia has diversified culture with different languages and religions, but the
main contribution is of native Australians ((Parnell, Morris & Jacobs, 2017). These natives of
Australia are known as Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders. In order to understand the
problem of ATSI, the selected nation is “Darug”. The territory of this nation expanded to
Camden in South Sydney. The Darug is taken as the one of dialect and others are the language
spoken by the neighboring Eora. The nation covers 2,300 square miles, and took the areas of
Hawkesbury River, and Mount Victoria (Hunter, Keay, Brown & Ralph, 2016). The main aim is
to understand the problems associated with the indigenous people, which they face mainly in
darug. Further, the report highlights the impact of these issues on the childhood education and
the government policies for education and teaching in this region are made in order to overcome
the issues in Darug.
Issues in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander

Torres Strait Islanders live in this place due to consumption of alcohol in Darug, community is
facing high level of mental, social and physical problems. Due to higher consumption of alcohol
by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders, Australia loses $14.35 billion in health systems and
costs of justice because of accidents and lost productivity (Price & Rogers, 2019). Alcohol

continuously increasing the burden of injury and disease in Aboriginal and Torres Strait
Islanders. This also reduces the progress on economic issues and social issues that includes
employment, community safety and education (Carey, Dudgeon, Hammond & Smith, 2017).
Another issue that this nation is facing related to the poverty, Aboriginal and Torres Strait
Islander people are mainly affected by the poverty as average income of this group are only 65%
of non-indigenous group (Arthur, 2018).This is because of the gap that is widening between
indigenous and non-indigenous groups in Australia. Due to poor state of this group families and
communities are not able to fulfill their basic needs and requirements. Poverty rate in this nation
is increasing because of low skills and less full time employment opportunities for people. Life
expectancy gaps in between non indigenous and indigenous group are 10 years and 12 years for
females and males respectively. Further, mortality rates for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander
young children and infants are 2 times higher than other communities in Australia. From this it is
clear that lack of employment or full time job opportunities for this nation is another issue that
Darug people are facing (Grant & Greenop, 2018).
The main issues related to social determinants are poverty, unemployment, and excessive
consumption of alcohol. These issues are the main concerns for the educators while adopting the
education of the indigenous people. The educators are aware of their children through teaching
them through a way to overcome the mental and physical stress, by teaching them the importance
of hygiene issues related to consumption of alcohol. As alcoholic parents negatively affect the
growth of children. Moreover, domestic violence mentally affect the young and growing
children. Here the role of early childhood educators increases, as educators can build a sense of
belongingness amongst children, create an environment of diverse communities in order to make
