AGING ADULT CASE STUDY
Introduction:
The assignment mainly talks about a patient who is 68 year old and has a height of 5’6’’
with a body weight of 210 pounds. She is independent in her activities of daily living and is well-
supported by families and relatives. This assignment would show how the nurse would be
helping her to develop healthier lifestyle choices so that she can overcome her conditions of
obesity and prevent occurrence of any chromic ailments.
BMI:
The body weight of the patient is 210 pounds and the height of the patient is 5’6’’. The
basal metabolic rate can be found out by the formula of
BMI = (weight in pounds* 703)/ height in inches2 = 33.9
It is known that patients with the BMI have the value of 30 and above is obese. The patient in the
case study has been found to have a BMI of 33.9 which shows that she is suffering from obesity.
Tools:
One of the nutritional assessment tool that can be used for the patient is the Mini-
Nutritional Assessment which is a screening tool that can help in identifying whether elderly
persons are malnourished or whether they are at the risk for the malnutrition. This toll would
help in developing knowledge about the nutritional status of the patient. Another tool that can be
also used is the subjective Global Assessment Form. This assessment helps in developing idea
about the nutrition intake of the patient and this would include history of recent uptake,
gastrointestinal symptoms, weight change and other clinical evaluation (Yumuk et al., 2015).
Adult pre-exercise screening tool can be found to be helpful in developing about the ideas of the

People are seen to gain weight by consuming
more amount of energy than their bodies
burn. Therefore consuming fewer calories or
energy actually helps individuals to maintain
a steady weight. Specific foods are higher in
calories than the others which are lower in
calories (Bray et al., 2016). It has been found
that lower portion of high calorie containing
foods contribute to a higher chance of
developing obesity and when individuals
consume more amounts of such foods, their
bodies store the excess calories. The
individuals are seen to gain weight and
develop obesity, therefore, patients need to

even though they are educated about how
exercises help in preventing weight gain and
maintain a stable weight helping individuals
to stay fitter, are found to lack motivation to
include any new changes in their routines

only suggestions and education to the
patients about the importance of weight
management might not enable patients to
