Introduction
Leadership is considered as an action, which helps in leading an individual or group of
individuals. It defines the complete process of leading and being lead by a leader (Holten and
Brenner 2015). It needed to be done by an expert as it involves the management of a whole
group and leading them in the right direction for the accomplishment of desired goals and
objectives. It is important for every organization to appoint an efficient leader so that the desired
operations of the organization can be accomplished in a productive manner. The GE (General
Electric) company of the US also focused on improving the performance of its employees as well
as the organization and they very well know that this can be achieved by appointment of
effective leaders and managers in the organization.
One of the best examples of effective leadership in GE organization is the leadership of Jeffrey
R. Immelt, who was the CEO and Chairman of GE from 2001 to 2017, which is quite a long time
to serve (General Eletric 2020). The leadership of Jeff Immelt at GE in his entire tenure is
analyzed in this study and on the basis of that some consulting points for efficient leadership in
the future have been explained in this consulting report for Jeff as well as leaders present in all
over the world. The report covered the elements like an assessment of Jeff’s leadership tenure at
GE, an explanation of leadership theories on the basis of Jeff’s behavior, the leadership
enhancement process for Jeff and concludes the report. This report is written with the motive of

organization (Mello, 35).
Assessment of Jeff Immelt's Leadership at GE
Leadership is a complex process that includes multiple steps and lots of effort from the side of a
leader as well as from the side of its followers (Carey and Philippon, 55). The leadership of Jell
Immelt at GE from the year 2001 to 2017 was a critical one as it managed the functions and
operations of GE in most crucial times when the market was not productive and the work
economy was also going down. Jeff still managed to hold GE among its competitors in a
productive manner. He led thousands of employees of GE in the toughest times of the
organization and holds the company compact from inside out. GE organization was going good
before the leadership of Jeff Immelt; however it was struggling to maintain its position in the
market. At the time of Jeff’s leadership the organization try to hold itself and among its

of some theories of leadership. These theories help in connecting the traits of leadership of Jeff
with the styles of leadership of that theory. There are many leadership theories as well as style
that directed the behavior of Jeff during his tenure at GE, however the most crucial one are
explained in following lines:
The Transformational Theory of Leadership: The theory of leadership that motivates
change through a well managed plan is known as transformational theory of leadership
(Juneja 2019). When one looks at the leadership style of Jeff it can be seen that from 201
to 2017, Jeff used various methods and policies to lead the behavior of its 300000
employees. He tried to take organization to new levels by introducing some ever

Leadership Theories based on Jeff Immelt's Behaviour
The behavior of Jeff Immelt during his tenure of GE’s leadership can be predicted with the help
of some theories of leadership. These theories help in connecting the traits of leadership of Jeff

changing policies and operations. The prevailing changes at that time inspired Jeff to
great extent and on the basis of that he took an initiative of transforming various elements
of organization like portfolio, operational style, marketing factors, etc (Maier, et al., 389).
The decision of Jeff points towards the presence of transformational theory’s features in
the behavior of Jeff, which facilitate complete transformation of GE at that time. It is
usually avoided by many leaders to bring change in the company and motivate their
teams to work towards achievement of that change; however this rigidness of resistance
from change in employees, management and customers of worldwide is transformed by
Jeff with his smart moves. Today it can be seen that with the decision of Jeff to take GE
to next level has benefited GE in many ways (Banfield and Kay, 71). Now the electric

includes the sharing of ideas and suggestions with the management of the organization
(Jr. and J., 121). The name of the theory suggests the participation of employees in the
decision making process of the management, which help employees in sharing of their
ideas, progress and suggestion with the management and the decision taking team. The
leadership theory which is inspired by participative approach is known as participative
theory of leadership. The leadership tenure of Jeff Immelt was also considered to be
participative in nature as he had given due importance to its employees. He had given
them right to provide their suggestions in front of the team members and leaders, which
can be assessed and them appropriate decisions can be undertaken (Eva, Newman and
Miao, 72).
Jeff also provided its employees the chance of implementation of their own decisions or

The LMX (Leader-Member Exchange) Theory of Leadership: There is another
theory of leadership that talks about relationship and the capability of members of a team,
who are productively leaded by specialist mangers and Jeff Immelt. In LMX theory of
leadership it is considered that the trust, relationship of a leader with its each team
member is different. It is so because human beings are dynamic in nature, no two humans
are same; hence the relationship of a leader with each of its members is also not same
(Merrilees and Frazer, 162). It differs based on the nature and traits of each member.
When it is looked from the point of view of Jeff, it can be seen that Jeff also had different
type of professional relationships with each of its employees. With some employees, who
are in direct contact with Jeff, he has strict relations, with some employees he was lenient
and with some employees he was both (Graen and Schiemann, 459).
It was based on the nature and capabilities of those employees. He assessed the capability
and want of each employee to treat them in the way they needed. This helped the
employees in growing and achieving their personal goals in effective and efficient
manner.

The strategies adopted by Jeff in leading a wide range of employees in General Electric
organization from 2001 to 2017 was good, which took company to new levels. However those
strategies were not enough to lead this big organization in this more challenging and volatile
atmosphere. It is expected by leaders of GE to adopt more diverse leadership styles and theories
to build up their leadership around them and act accordingly. In order to improve the leadership
of Jeff, which can help him in becoming a more successful leader Jeff with its old strategies, can
adopt few new effective strategies as well (Cloutier, Felusiak and Hill, 122). These strategies are
identified and discussed in following lines:
Self Driven Leadership: Jeff must adopt some methods to make himself a self driven
leader. It means that he must not need any person to motivate him to lead in effective
manner; however he should make himself to stay motivated always to lead a wide range
of employees. In this manner he can effectively motivate his employees and lead them to
new directions without must resistance to transformations. The self driven leadership also
help leader to bring changes in their capabilities and nature. It helps in directly their
theory of leadership that talks about relationship and the capability of members of a team,
who are productively leaded by specialist mangers and Jeff Immelt. In LMX theory of

help leader to bring changes in their capabilities and nature. It helps in directly their
targets to a focal point and a continuous reach to that focal point can help them in
achieving goals in more productive and positive manner (Hoch, 163). Hence in this way

employees in the decision making, operations, etc of GE organization. In this way Jeff
can have a team of highly motivated employees, which stay loyal with the company for
longer times. This can also help GE to achieve competitive advantage over other
organizations in the long run.
Provide Mentoring and Coaching: The another method of building a successful
leadership in the organization for leaders is that they must not only act as the manager of
employees but also act as the motivator by mentoring and coaching them about the
changing conditions and market. Jeff was a good leader during his time of control,
however he was lacking in some areas like he was not effectively mentoring or coaching
his employees, infect he was just offering them space to think and react but not direct in a
right way. it is important for leaders to be more than just the leaders (Dries, 279). It is
expected from them to mentor their members in the way which can help employees in
their future.
Emphasize on Increased Interaction: In order to be a more successful leader it is also
expected from Jeff Immelt to make each meeting or session with its team more
interactive and efficient. This can further help employees and leaders of GE organization
to discuss their ideas, problems and issues with the management or other employees in
more effective manner (Mendenhal, Weber and Arnardottir, 125). In this way Jeff can
become a more productive leader, which consider effective involvement of its employees

Enhancement of Jeff Immelt's Leadership Style
The leadership style adopted by Jeff was mostly inspired by transformational theory,
participative theory and LMX theory of leadership. On the basis of that Jeff took effective
decisions and took GE organization to different levels. He remade the organization in this
volatile market. His efforts was effective, however the market is not static it is changing on a
rapid pace. In this rapidly changing market conditions, it is expected from Jeff to continuously
bring changes in its leadership style to enhance its effects on development of company. In this
section a set procedure is discussed which can help Jeff in enhancement of its leadership style in

c) Actions Undertaken: When the plan is identified and builds up and in order to achieve
that plan the necessary actions must be identifying, analysed and them undertaken. These

togetherness among employees of the company and in this way Jeff can lead his
employees more productively.
d) Management of Implemented plan: When the actions are undertaken the next step that
Jeff must take is to management of implemented plan. The management of that plan
includes multiple functions like planning, organizing, directing, controlling and
coordination. It is expected from Jeff to follow these steps in the management of his
implemented plan for the achievement of established goals of the team (Krishnan and
Scullion, 435).
e) Accomplishment of Goal: The next step is to accomplish the set goal, which can be
achieved by proper management of implemented plan of the team by Jeff. This is already
undertaken by Jeff in previous step and in this the accomplishment of goal is included.
The goal which is set by team of Jeff which also fulfills the individual goals of the
members of the team must be achieved in productive and effective manner by Jeff
(General Eletric 2020).
f) Follow Up: The last step is to take follow up from members, the result of accomplished
goals, the supervisors, etc. This type of follow up can help Jeff in understanding the areas
where he was lacking, which can be added in next set goal of the team. In this way this
step never ends and goes on continuously. This can help Jeff with his advance leadership
styles to give organizations a strong competitive advantage over others in long run.
These steps can defiantly help Jeff Immelt in long run to enhance the strength of his leadership
and become a successful leader. The world is ever changing as well as the nature of humans is
also dynamic, hence it is expected from Jeff to work on the given strategies and discussed plan of
enhancement of leadership, which can help the team members and Jeff himself to become a
