Development Needs Analysis
Introduction
Developmental need analysis enables individuals to assess and re-assess the needs
that they have in order to become a fully qualifies professional (Ritter et al., 2018).
Professional development is not only dependent of the skills and knowledge related to the
course or intended career but also soft skills that are necessary for becoming a truly
successful person in future (Hurrell 2016). The scope of this paper is two-fold. In the first
part, the paper analyses the needs for professional development and presents a developmental
plan which is supported by self-analysis and career development till date. The paper analyses
the professional and academic goals that I have and how they are important. The paper then
goes on to explore the learning ability and skills that I have that will enable me to achieve my
goals in future. Finally, a developmental plan is created based on my present skills and
learning to give structure to the things that I want to achieve and help me to achieve my
goals.
Analysis
Background
My academic goals include becoming a successful relationship manager in the
hospitality and tourism industry. Given the academic degrees that I have gathered, I possess
all the technical necessities to become a successful relationship manager. As a relationship
manager I will need to manage the customer requests and align their demands with company
policy. The role of a manager is to establish strong and positive relationship with the
customers and with the academic skills that I am gathering, in tend to do so. The role of any

management designation is to manage people as well. In this regard I will be responsible for
managing the teams that will work under me and train them so that they are able to customer
requests and booking processes. I may also need to train staffs that will deal with customers
directly where I will need to instill in them the necessary soft skills that are necessary for
such posts (Matteson, Anderson and Boyden 2016). I might also consider inventory manager
and finder for my future career. this enables me to look after the inventory and manage them
so that the operations of the organization runs smooth. In future, my career aspiration is to
establish an online tourism and hospitality business where I will be able to apply my
entrepreneurial skills and leadership skills further.
Strategic learner
Through self-analysis of my learning abilities I have found out that I am a
combination of auditory and tactile learner. While I am quite good at developing
understanding and knowledge through hearing things from people and instructors, I also learn
through practical experiences. This is why, most of my abilities were built through the
practical learnings that I had on the job (Panadero, Brown and Strijbos 2016). As an auditory
and tactile learner I am prone to depend on learning from hearing recordings, lectures and
discussions rather than reading textbooks. Hearing makes it easier for me process information
and memorize them. The tactile component helps me in learning on the job. Practical
applications or real life situations teach me better than anything else.
Kolb’s theory of experiential learning explains four stages of learning (Sudria et al.,
2018). The concrete experience where individuals learn through doing something or having a
hands on experience, reflecting on the experience to analyze it and thinking about what
happened and why, abstract conceptualization where people learn from the experience that
they have had, thinking about the good and bad things that happened and what they could
have done better and active experimentation, where individuals try out the things that they

have learned thorough the experience and reflection (Tomkins and Ulus 2016). According to
the theorist, individuals need these four stages to learn something completely. This method
helps in strategic learning through self-reflection. This also establishes the ground for self-
learning and independence.
Another learning theory that is related to developmental process is the connectivism
approach. The theory proposes that human beings learn new things by connections (Goldie
2016). When we receive new information we try to decipher the meaning of it by forming
correlations with previously learned ideas and information. This learning style is particularly
important in the new light of digital age as there are continuous flow of information and
people learn continuously. For example, while working as a sales manager I leaned
communication skills that have trained me in becoming more professional in my approach
with clients.
Both the theories that facilitate learning have helped me develop my current skills.
They have continuously aided my development through different stages. It prepared me to
learn from situations and perform better by working through challenging situations. In my
future professions these learning styles will help me in learning new things and handling
situations better. The connectivism theory is based on the idea of chaos (AlDahdouh, Osorio
and Caires 2015). It opines that human beings live in a perpetual state of chaos and it is
through this chaos we learn to interpret things in our own way. In many cases, the situations
that we are thrust into cannot be controlled by us and thus we must learn to adopt methods of
learning and acting which will not create disruption to our desired outcomes and adapt
ourselves with the new environment.
Due to the media such as Facebook, Wikipedia, blogs and browsers, people are
gathering new information and concepts every day. The global scenario is shifting every day

and nothing remains fixed for long. In such a state of change, people need to make sense of
the influx of information and for that the auditory and tactile learning technique is best suited.
It gives me better process the data that I hear and learn things by immersing myself into the
job.
Skills analysis
I have completed my Travel and Tourism Level 2 degree from Lambeth Academy and
Business level 3 in the same university. I also have Hospitality and Event management
degree from Ealing, Hammersmith and West London College. Currently I am pursuing
International Hospitality and Tourism Management from Coventry University. Throughout
my learning process and work experience, I have gathered many skills and honed some that I
owned from the beginning. The best skill that I have is my communication skills and listening
skills. These two skills go hand in hand as one without then other is quite useless. A person
who only listens but does not contribute and a person who only speaks but does not listen
cannot be good team players. Workplaces have become extremely global nowadays and this
means that people need to work on teams where communication skills are necessary (Khan et
al., 2018). I also have a developed interpersonal skills and flexibility. These two skills allows
me to establish relationships with other people working with or around me and take into
account their perspectives and emotions.
I also have good leadership skills that enables me to direct people to a positive
outcome. Being a goal oriented person, I am able to inspire others to perform better. This
leads to an overall improvement of standards. While working with a team, leadership abilities
are important abilities as it helps individuals to establish their position (Aga, Noorderhaven
and Vallejo 2016). Good leadership qualities also helps then organization that is related to
them. I have a fairly analytical mind and I am inquisitive. I actively seek out information
about issues so that I can make informed decisions. In any challenging situations, I analyze

the situation and create some alternative solutions. Taking all things into account, I choose
the optimum solution that will solve majority of the problems. I am also a competent self-
learner who can learn from reflections.
My work experience till date has taught me team work. While working in any
organization, team work is considered the best way to work as it reduces the load and creates
a bonding among the members. Certain soft skills are required for successful team work and I
possess almost all of them (Davidson 2016). I have the zeal to work harder and complete my
tasks within a stipulated deadline. My language skills are quite good which is useful for
tourism and hospitality industry as well as any other global organization. Many studies have
suggested that in the volatile world that we live in today, the soft skills are much more
important than the hard skills (Stewart, Wall & Marciniec 2016). The hard skills make you
eligible for a post while the soft skills land you with the job. Further developmental plan has
been developed to address the issues that are still there.
Conclusion
From the above discussion it can be concluded that self-developmental process is an
important part of career planning. It enables us to look back and apply self-learning through
reflection. The skills that we gather throughout our experiences are honed due to this learning
method. Other than the academic degree or industrial trainings that individuals receive, soft
skills such as communication, active listening, interpersonal and flexibility are also needed
for doing a job successful. The industry that I have chosen, the tourism and hospitality
industry, is extremely client oriented and here these skills are more necessary. Thus, the
learning and the experience I have gathered so far and through the reflection and
developmental plan I will be able to achieve my career goals.
