2ANALYSIS OF THE POLITICAL SPEECH- JUSTIN TRUDEAU’S VICTORY
SPEECH
Introduction
The election campaign and the result were as astounding as the victory speech of the
thirty third Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, twenty-third Prime Minister of Canada, and the
fourth among the Prime Ministers to hold the office consecutively. He has been the face of
the Liberal Party since 2013, leading from the front in matters of immigration. Racial
discrimination and, most importantly, climate change. However, the forty-third election
campaign was seen as the worst phase Trudeau faced in his political career, but this was not
surprising as his progressive and outspoken nature has been a source of discomfort for the
conservatives with his carbon tax. Nevertheless, words on the part of Trudeau did not match
up to his action. Older pictures of him with painted blackface emerged, which reflected in the
result with them forming the minority government, unlike their 2015 results where the
Liberals emerged victorious with more than fifty percent lead and formed a majority
government. The paper aims to analyze the victory speech of Trudeau addressed after his
victory from Montreal on twenty-first October 2019.
Discussion
The victory speech by Trudeau holds historical importance for the prediction showed
the Liberal party finally taking a backseat. It was chiefly due to Quebec being in front while
showing their frustration on the lack of action from the Liberals when it comes to the ban on
any religious symbols in the public sector. The speech broke the convention of the campaign
as it has been customary for the winning leaders to allow the losing party leader to address
their concession speech. However, the sight was different in Montreal at this election result
(Beaudin, 2018). The conservative leader, Andrew Scheer, who succeeded in maintaining
their position as official opposition, was the first one to break the convention when he started
his speech cutting NDP representative Jagmeet Singh’s speech. Despite the tension, Trudeau
displayed the composure as expected from ‘Sweet Woke Bae Prince’ (Somos, 2019). It was

short and sweet and addressed to the issues which people wanted him to address (Beaudin,
2018).
He addressed the speech directing his narrative directly on the parties who based their
campaign on the divided of immigration policies and stringent rules when it comes to races
and religion. It was very clear from the historical point of view that Trudeau addressed the
uncomfortable nature in which issues such as abortion and climate change which is one of the
strongest fronts of the Liberals. The language of the speech is directly in contrast to the result
which was delivered to the Liberal Party. Trudeau was able to maintain the government, but
for the first time in the history of the Canadian election, a winning party has with only thirty-
five percent of the vote, and it spoke in volume the citizen’s displeasure over the method of
working of the government in the past (Gutiérrez Haces, 2016). The clash in the House of
Commons came out in the invalid way as there was a time in the podium where three leaders
of the campaign did talk together, which could not be taken as reasonable. The Trudeau
government was handed the result from the citizens signifying their will that the government
should be adjusting. However, the first addressing of the leaders led to the massive upheaval
among the nation.
The speech was addressed not only to people who came out in support instead of
people who did not and cast their votes for conservatives. Trudeau has always been one of the
best orators one can see in world politics, and he took this opportunity to address to whole
Canada by declaring that the Liberal Party works for the country and Canadian as a whole.
Though the speech and the whole thing by the three leaders were criticized by the media,
Trudeau’s speech could be deemed as clever, for he communicated in very concise words his
action plans and to avoid further criticism addressed Quebec directly (Salicru, 2018). The
message was very clear from his side that the Party aims to work in the same direction as they
have been pushing the cause of climate change and supporting the cause.

SPEECH
Before the election, the prediction report from Saskatchewan and Alberta showed
their frustration over Trudeau’s government regarding their welfare. Their stance has been
familiar to those of nationalists and showed displeasure over immigration policies. Alberta,
unlike Saskatchewan Metis indigenous population, does possess the land, and their living
condition and social security stand to almost non-existing. Trudeau cleverly veils his
reference to understanding their position and promises to look and help in it. People of the
First Nation and the Quebec poll result showed their anger against the party by throwing
them to the minority position, which is acknowledged in the speech. Trudeau cleverly reveals
his understanding of the power yielding voters by recognizing the voice of the people through
their votes.
The message delivered by Trudeau was evident, for he mentioned Sir Wilfred Laurier,
whose political career carried various affinity to his own and was the first of the Liberal
leaders who worked for Saskatchewan and Alberta (Lotfi, 2019). The result of the speech was
seen in the latter days when soon after the result the Cabinet of Ministers was formed, and the
whole world’s eyes were on it, Trudeau aced it by revealing the mandate letter publicly rather
than in-keeping the usual way of releasing them on the federal level. The first week of the
office gave hope and trust to the voters on their decision, for he maintained his words on the
transparent working.
Conclusion
The victory speech by Trudeau, though, was not conventional in its approach, but the
message was delivered to the people of Canada very clearly. The words were chosen by the
re-elected Prime Minister reflected his competency in being able to read the ballot result and
with it the message delivered to him and his party by the people. Though his speech was
short, it addressed all the pivotal subjects. It ranged from the everyday issue of social security
to the equality issue of a single-parent to the graver points of guns, immigration, and the

recognition of indigenous people reflecting that the issues form the priority in the working of
the government. Though the result of the speech depends mainly on the action of the
government, it did establish in front of the world, the foundational concept on which the party
will work.
