Bruyneel, L., Li, B., Ausserhofer, D., Lesaffre, E., Dumitrescu, I., Smith, H. L., &
Sermeus, W. (2015). Organization of hospital nursing, provision of nursing care,
and patient experiences with care in Europe. Medical Care Research and
Review, 72(6), 643-664.
This research discusses previous findings of research into nursing outcomes. The study
claims that patient experiences are a vital part of the structure and process of nursing
care. The research found that leaving less clinical care activities undone and having
more bachelor-prepared nurses brings about more significant effects in patients
expressing nursing excellence. Patient experiences were found to be a strong indicator
of deficiencies in the nursing care process.
The research analyzed RN4CAST data in a cross-sectional design, where surveys were
collected from patients and nurses between 2009 and 2010 in eight countries. Nurses
gave data on nursing care, staff characteristics, their well-being, and their last shift,
while patients gave data on their encounter with hospital care.
The study concluded that there is a need for reinforcement in nursing management in order to
implement strategies that enhance quality care by allowing nurses to spend more time
directly caring for patients.
Edvardsson, D., Watt, E., & Pearce, F. (2017). Patient experiences of caring and person‐
centredness are associated with perceived nursing care quality. Journal of
Advanced Nursing, 73(1), 217-227.
The main objective of this study was to find out the association between patient’s ratings of
perceptions of the caring and person-centeredness, and perception of quality of
nursing care. The research employed a descriptive non-experimental correlational

method for data collection and analysis. A survey was used to collect self-report data
from patients. In addition, descriptive statistics we used together with hierarchical
linear regression and Pearson correlation.
The study discovered that there was a strong correlation between the patient’s perceptions of
person-centeredness and caring and the quality of nursing care. Therefore, assessing
health services and the quality of nursing care can be enhanced through inclusion of
self-report data from the patients about their experiences of care services. The
assessment data can also be used to improve the quality of care. The study also found
that factors such as communicable staff, environmental support and knowledge
impact patient’s perception of quality if nursing care.
Hanse, J. J., Harlin, U., Jarebrant, C., Ulin, K., & Winkel, J. (2016). The impact of
servant leadership dimensions on leader–member exchange among health care
professionals. Journal of nursing management, 24(2), 228-234.
This research aimed to examine the effect that servant leadership dimensions has on leader-
member exchange amongst healthcare professionals. A cross-sectional study that used
a questionnaire as the data collection tool was done in four hospital units where two
hundred and forty employees were study subjects. The study ran on the hypothesis
that support from leaders and the quality of dyadic leader-employee relationships are
significant in relation to the work environment and in determining the turn over
intentions in healthcare.
The results of the study revealed significant correlation between leader-member exchange
and all dimensions of servant leadership. However, the correlation between humility
and leader-member exchange was the strongest, followed by empowerment and
leader-member exchange. Roughly 50% of the variance in leader-member exchange

was covered by humility, stewardship and empowerment after a hierarchical
regression analysis was done.
The results of this study can be used to identify and develop servant leadership dimension
that allow development of stronger exchange relationships between leaders and
subordinates in a health care setting.
Rouleau, G., Gagnon, M. P., Côté, J., Payne-Gagnon, J., Hudson, E., & Dubois, C. A.
(2017). Impact of information and communication technologies on nursing care:
results of an overview of systematic reviews. Journal of medical Internet
research, 19(4), e122.
The objectives of this study included summarizing evidence from systematic reviews in
relation to effects of Information and Communication Technologies on nursing care,
and Finding out whether specific Information and Communication technologies, their
characteristics and their reason for use have any effect on nursing care. The research
considered four types of ICT commonly used by nurses that include computerized
decision support systems, communication systems, information systems and
management systems.
Since nurses make up the largest group among health care providers, use of ICT by nurses is
bound to have significant impact on nursing practice. The researchers claim that use
of ICT has the ability to improve the quality of care by promoting patient-centered
healthcare, and educate both patients and health care professionals. The review can
also serve as a starting point for other researchers that seek to compare and contrast
the positive and negative effects of ICT on nursing care.
