According to the author, addiction is the state whereby the brain’s metabolic
functions have been altered. Drugs, chemical substances, play a major role in the
alteration of the brain’s functions. Drug addiction refers to functional impulse and
mental dependency. It is persistent and continuing consumption of any medicine or
compound element without prescription from a certified medical doctor. Drug addiction
leads to mental illnesses and instability. Families are also greatly affected by drug
addiction thereby leading to separation in marriages. Drug addiction and trafficking has
affected millions of people in the world, especially young adolescents. The youth are

deeply engaging in illegal trafficking of drugs.
The most commonly abused drug is alcohol. The rate of alcohol consumption in the
society is very high among the youth and even older people. However, men consume a lot of
alcohol compared to women. High school graduates are mostly addicted and involved in drugs
according to a lot of surveys. A common drug abused by the youth is cannabis. Cannabis
causes mental incapacitation thereby leading to poor educational accomplishment. Due to poor
academic achievement, many youths opt to drop out of school. According to the author, age
and gender is an imperative influence in psychological health.

The probe on drug misuse in Australian communities conducted by the Standing
Committee on Family and Community Affairs ended with an all-inclusive report. The
Government through its agencies stopped a lot of illegal drugs from entering into the
streets of Australia. Therefore, few people have succumbed to opioid overdose; many
parents are educating their children about drugs and the effects of drugs. Treatment for
drug addiction problems has also been found. The Government, through funding of
research on drugs and treatment possibilities, has sort to make Australia drug free.
According to the report, drug abuse leads to financial and societal effects on
families and communities. The safety of road transportation has been jeopardized, health
complications are common among drug users, ferocious and illegal aspects of drug abuse
and marketing has increased and the safety and efficiency in places of work has declined.
These are the significant impacts of drug addiction and misuse. The report suggests that
more schools and universities should be built so that young people can focus on
education, health care programmes fully funded, families aiding in drug eradication
campaigns and the media also campaigning against drug abuse.

Book/Book Chapter Citation
(Lindesmith, 2017)
Book/Book Chapter Annotation (Summary & Evaluation) (200 wds)
The author elaborates on the reasons why people are addicted to drugs. People who
have a physical dependence on drugs become addicted to drugs while people who do not
depend on drugs physically do not become addicts. Drug addiction leads to withdrawal
suffering and behavioural change. Addicts prefer to stay away from the normal people and
would instead opt to engage in petty crimes in the streets. People make the assumption that al
addicts should not be trusted. Some are usually honest even though addicts do not see the
sense in saying the truth. This, however, is not a habit induced by drugs.
The author also explains why those in hospitals do not become addicts yet they use
drugs regularly. While in hospital, patients use drugs on a prescription basis thereby justifying
the non-addicts theory. The author also explains that opiate type of drugs have severe impacts
on people compared to alcohol which is legal. Building a relationship or trust status with
addicts was, however, difficult for the author due to the withdrawal anguish of addicts. This is
because other non-addicts dealt with addicts in an authoritative manner and criticized them.

problems associated with it. All in the Mind explores the effects of ice to the brain and the
treatment preferences. There has not been a consistent increase in ice users. However, the
current users are upgrading from lower grade ice to high quality crystal ice. Ice has severe
impacts to the psychology of people. It leads violent behaviours and aggression. Ice is more
powerful compared to other substance drugs.
The drug is pleasurable therefore when a person engages in pleasant activities, it is
exhausted from the brain and the urge to use more ice is created. The violent and aggressive
reactions start manifesting after ice is exhausted from the brain. Majority of them people using
meth are often depressed and delusional. Meth is not safe at all considering that it is an illicit
drug. Addiction can, however, be reduced when one finds pleasure in other things apart from
drugs. Physicians should also understand drug users in order to help them.
