The research gave priority to publications highlighting the facts on drug addiction such as; age
and gender that commonly misuse drugs and the comparison between people who use different
drugs.

According to the author, addiction is the state whereby the brain’s metabolic
functions have been altered. Drugs, chemical substances, play a major role in the
alteration of the brain’s functions. Drug addiction refers to functional impulse and
mental dependency. It is persistent and continuing consumption of any medicine or
compound element without prescription from a certified medical doctor. Drug addiction
leads to mental illnesses and instability. Families are also greatly affected by drug
addiction thereby leading to separation in marriages. Drug addiction and trafficking has
affected millions of people in the world, especially young adolescents. The youth are

deeply engaging in illegal trafficking of drugs.
The most commonly abused drug is alcohol. The rate of alcohol consumption in the
society is very high among the youth and even older people. However, men consume a lot of
alcohol compared to women. High school graduates are mostly addicted and involved in drugs
according to a lot of surveys. A common drug abused by the youth is cannabis. Cannabis
causes mental incapacitation thereby leading to poor educational accomplishment. Due to poor
academic achievement, many youths opt to drop out of school. According to the author, age
and gender is an imperative influence in psychological health.
