Laila Shawa is a Palestinian painter whose work mainly describes the personal reflection in
terms of the political scenario of her country (barjeelartfoundation.org, 2018). Laila Shawa is
one of the most prolific and prominent artist of the Arabic revolutionary. The work of the
artist has received worldwide acclamation and has been displayed in many public and private
collections. Painter Laila Shawa highlighted the story of a suicide bomber that failed her
mission in the exhibition (octobergallery.co.uk, 2018). In this thesis, the painting of Laila
Shawa was studied critically in terms of the colours used for the painting as well as the props
such as the cactus and belt and the expression of the girl. The use of each of the colours in the
painting was criticized as it had deep inner meanings. The different colours used by Laila
Shawa were red, green and black that had different significance and highlights inner
meanings. The artist has mainly used dark colours that signifies blood and death that was the
main aim of the suicide bomber (youtube.com, 2018).
Face to face by Laila Shawa is a painting that about a suicide bomber who failed in her
mission. The following points below are a critique of how best the artist portrayed her
message and where she might have made mistakes (globalfundforwomen.org, 2018).
The painting highlights red as the dominating colour. The colour red has always been
associated with danger as red signifies the colour of blood.
The paining also contains neon green colour that signifies hope and nature because the artists
see hope in the girl that is in the picture and believes they can do better, something she did
after being released from prison (globalpropaganda.com, 2018).
The painting also includes a thorny cactus plant that highlights the hardship and suffering of
the Palestinian woman in the picture and the society. Because of the sharp edges of the
society, she makes the decision of being a suicide bomber (openlibrary.org, 2018).
