1COUNSELLING: ANALYSIS
Psychological counselling, in clinical terms, can be defined as a speciality in
psychological practice that creates and maintains a focus on facilitating personal and
interpersonal functioning across the lifespan (Woolfe, 2016). In generic terms, counselling or
psychotherapy can be defined as a personal and individual process where a trained
psychologist seeks to offer emotional, psychological and cognitive assistance to an individual
or a community to change or modify their attitude and/ or behavior so that they can cope with
certain mental illness or psychosomatic illness (Kennedy & Arthur, 2014). However, the
paradigm of counselling has a broader base in today’s world where people are hiring
counsellors for social, vocational, health related, developmental and organizational concerns
(Galbraith, 2017). The respective article is an analytical essay of psychological counselling of
a patient called Chelsea due to her increased anger and the ambiguity she faces in
understanding the reason behind her short temper. The analytical essay delves into the
societal problems Chelsea faces due to the reason why she developed certain psychological
issues and the way by which that can be coped. The essay is analytical and also intuitive
because it delves deep into the personality traits of Chelsea and tries to understand what sort
of human being she is and what kind of counselling advice would be better for her to cope
with her life and mental illness.
The world of psychology and its scope is infinite and multidimensional in nature.

tension and competition that are sometimes fueled by certain social evils, human beings tend
to become skeptical about life and psychological illness such as depression, anxiety disorder
and bipolar disorder creep in the life of the individuals that reduces the quality of their life.
Such issues need to be dealt immediately with the help of a mental health professional who
needs to be compassionate, an unprejudiced observer and a stoic listener who will delve into
the problems of the people and find out solutions against it. Psychological counselling has
become a part of the normal life discourse of modern men and women. It has become an
indispensable tool for the present generation to feel balanced and at ease with all the
complexities they go through in their life regarding education, ambition and personal life.
Case formulation
Chelsea is a graphic designer, which means she has a strong creative bent of mind and
therefore, she has opted that as her career. However, as she is finding less scope in this area,
she is taking up administrative jobs which is not her genre. It is making her completely
drained out and she is also not finding interest in her job, even though she finds some
freelancing graphic designing work for her, that too, seldom. It means that Chelsea is not
satisfied with her career. Apart from that, Chelsea is also not happy with her personal life.
She has been facing a lot of unpleasant and undesirable acts and behavior from the part of her
family members. As she has never seen her real father, her mother, who is married to another
man, who has two children, a son and a daughter, seemed to be a bitter pill for her. The
reason was that the step brother of Chelsea has been sexually harassing her lately that has
turned traumatic for her. When she talked about her sexual harassment case to Wendy (her
mother), she seemed to be supportive towards her yet she was in a condition that she “did not
know what to do”, which means that Chelsea has not recieved proper help and support from
