Introduction
A health professional is trained nurse who diagnose, treat and prevent different kind of
illness of the patient. It’s the duty of the nurse to simplify the medication usage, meal planning
and blood glucose monitoring training given properly to the patient. Before assisting the patient
the nurse should be well versed with the disease history, prescribed medications and patient
physiology. Patients who received better diabetes education have shown better hemoglobin
levels, less emergency visits, and good overall health in comparison with patient who did not
received the education.
More than 30 million people are suffering from Diabetes in Canada, The disease is
targeting youth and children between age of 5 and 20 with type 1 diabetes. There are more than
2100010 patients in Canada making it an epidemic. Diabetes occurs when the glucose in the
blood level is not observed by the cells increasing the sugar level in the blood. Insulin is
hormone which monitors the entry of the glucose in the cells. It is found in pancreas in the beta
cells. Type 1 diabetes is when the pancreases are not producing insulin due to not having a beta
cell. The beta cell is killed by its own cells due to the understanding of the cells that it is a
foreign substance. This is very common in children and young adolescence (Care, 2019).
The teaching plan
The goal of the diabetes teaching plan is to educate the patient about the lifestyle change
that will result in stable glucose level and healthy life. The method followed will put the patient
in the centre and not the physician. The learning for a diabetic patient is complex it includes,
monitoring the glucose level, medication, exercise, eating habits.
As the patient is an adolescent it will be better for him to come for the first session in a
group discussion that will minimize his trauma , next session shall be followed with one on one
meeting (American Diabetes Association, 2016).
Teaching methodology for the Patient:
Analyzing the patient- It’s not only about understanding the disease but to under the patient.
Here the health care professional is required to look into patient’s age, language ability, food
preferences, ethnicity and learning style. There are instances where the patient is not able to
understand the course in English or is illiterate. I will be asking about his formal education and
language desired to communicate. More often we make assessment based on our assumptions.
Instead of assuming things I will be preparing chart of what is his likes, dislikes, foods choice,
daily routine and other related things (Orchard et al, 2015).

Focus on the objective- There is so many things to talk about diabetes management to the
patient but its best to clarify the objective of the learning session. The objective will be to
educate him about the disease, preventions, cares and proper control technique (Htike et al,
2017).
I will make the objective of how he can control his diet.
What should he do when the sugar level rise or decreases and how to take insulin.
To helps him to have normal physical as well as emotional growth.
Techniques of teaching
It will be
helpful for the student to understand the delicate situation of surviving with type 1 diabetes.
Prepare him to control any critical situation that he may face in future. The method of teaching
will include facts representation with the help of graph, occasional role play by the help of other
patient or staffs, encouraging him to attend group discussion to eliminate any doubt, lastly one-
on-one session contained of lectures, workshops and el learning (Silviay,2016).
To control
the eating habits and what foods to keep in the diet and what to avoid , guiding him on the daily
routine for a healthy living, the meaning of high sugar level and low sugar level shall be
explained through role play. Whom to approach when feeling uneasy through lectures, What are
the roles of his parent and associates, how he can take help from them. Through e learning and
workshop I shall be educating him about what activities to avoid (Hoffman & Osipoff, 2016).
In short, kids with type 1 diabetes should be taught:
Teaching to take insulin as prescribed
To encourage eating a healthy, balanced diet and to check the carbohydrate counts.
Should know to check blood sugar levels
Follow a regular physical activity
Instructional strategies to be followed
To create an effective teaching outcome it is important to understand the preference of
the patient. There are several instructional tools to explain the task so I may prefer video, poster,
demonstration materials, charts and displays. This will make his session easier to understand the
objective of the learning. In the one on one session lectures will be given with the help of video
so that while watching he may be able to understand the topic. The instruction of injecting the
insulin will be done with the help of role play and Anatomical models.
