Activities

Activity 1.1.1 1.1.3

Estimated Time
30 Minutes
Objective
To provide you with an opportunity to review organisational processes,
procedures
and requirements for undertaking risk management in
Accordance
with current risk management standards.
Activity
What is the difference between the new ISO13000 and AS/NZS 4360:2004?
ISO13000 and AS/NZS aims in improving the advance risk management
processes and practises that is followed within an organization. The ISO
13000 defines risk as an effect of uncertainty in a project and is aligned
with AS/NZS 4360:2004. However, the difference is in the process of
implementation of a risk management process. In ISO 13000, framework,
there are five steps of implementation of a risk management process. It is
a planned process and therefore is true for certain specific risks

The AS/NZS 4360:2004 on the other hand is a generic guide that is used for
management of the risks. This framework of risk is applied to a wide range of
activities, decision and operations within an organization. The benefit if this
risk management framework is that maximum benefit is obtained by
application of the risk management process.

Briefly outline the legal framework.

ISO 31000: This framework of risk management increases the likelihood of
achieving the main objectives of project execution. This framework is
mainly used for certification process and also provides guidance for
different internal and external audit programmes.

AS/NZS 4360:2004: This framework, generally assists an organization in
effective allocation of the resources and treatment of the risks. This
particular framework is known for improving the organizational learning and
organizational resilience process.

Case study: Christine Finkel worked 13 hours a day, six days a week for three
months. She noted that the floor was slippery but decided to help a customer
before taking steps to clear the area. By the time that Christine returned to the
area, she had forgotten that the floor was wet. Christine fell and broke her leg.

What unsafe behaviour have you identified here?

The unsafe behaviour that has been identified in the above case is that a
high priority risk was not attested on time, leading to a much bigger risk.
Before attaining the customers, Christine Finkel, should have instructed the
office boy in cleaning the wet floor. It would have hardly taken a couple of
minutes and the customer could have waited for two minutes. If the floor
was cleaned on time, Christine Finkel would not have hurt her leg.

What could be the impact of Christine’s situation to the organisation?

Christines situation will have a very large impact on the current situation of the
organization. This is particularly because she is a dedicated employee who works
for 13 hours in a day, six days in a week for 3 months at a stretch. Since she broke
her leg, she will not be able to attain office for at least 3-4 weeks which indicates
business loss for the organization.

What would you do if you took a job as a supervisor and walked into a similar
situation?

If I had taken the job of a supervisor and had walked into a similar
situation, I would have arrange to sweep the floor as soon as possible. I
would have taken necessary steps to ascertain that similar situation does
not arise again by ensuring that there is no wet floor in the working
space.

Activity 1.2.1 1.2.3

Estimated Time
30 Minutes
Objective
To provide you with an opportunity to determine scope for risk management
Process
.
Activity
Do you believe understanding the different types of risk can assist you in
defining the scope?

The scope of a project identifies the accurate goals, deliverables and the
tasks that are needed to be completed after the execution of the project.
The project scope is generally identified and determined at the beginning
of the project so that the process of project planning becomes easier. Risk
and uncertainties are an integral part of a project. Therefore,
identification of the different risks and uncertainties can assist the
project manager in defining the scope of the project. Therefore, an initial
risk management is generally carried out at the beginning of the project
so that the scope of the project can be identified correctly.

When writing the scope, what should the writer consider?

While writing the scope of a project, the most prominent risks in the
project are needed to be identified; so that the project can b planned in
an effective manner. Apart from the scope, the main deliverables of the
project should be considered along with the assumptions and the
limitations of the project. The details of the exclusion and the constraints
related to the project should be considered as well while writing the
scope of the project. The assumptions, constraints and the risks are
considered to be main factors linked with the scope of the project.
