INTRODUCTION
This report aims to understand the built environment with help of an example in the
construction industry. The built environment is built by a human in our surroundings. It is
different from the Natural environment but one thing keeps in mind it does not include
construction as well as it includes building infrastructure, and parks. Infrastructure includes
many activities like transportation networks, flood defence, telecommunication, etc.
construction industry is very extensive it includes civil engineering, infrastructure, and all
building (Gilbert and Stephens 2018). The construction industry adds a new feature to their
work it is digitalization which gives strength to the built environment. The construction
industry uses these tools for their work. Now every construction industry makes a plan and
they execute their plan digitally to give a digitally constructed view. The new feature has now
become a part of every construction industry. The built environment is to be an important and
useful term it includes the human-made environment. The population is increasing so they
want a built environment it gives a chance for the life in small place a large number of
people.
The construction industry is not a small term it includes various things are residential
and commercials industry, schools, and housing when it talks about the residential industry
then humans make a small plan but when construction industries think about commercialism
which improved large specified area for the welfare of people in UK. Where construction
industry open malls and various apartment which give revenue. The responsibility for the
built environment is increasing day by day because of population increase so it is very
important to maintain the environment and increase sustainable development (Cao, Næss and
Wolday 2019). It is identified that the built environment depends on various factors including
the clear cause of actions, clear communication, inspirational vision, and appropriate
governance model strategies or objective. These things give direction to the construction
industry for making a successful project. The built environment is a very important term in
our lives without this there is no life. This report will cover the discussion of the built
environment and after this will select a project that will help in understanding the built
environment.

Investigate the various sectors of the built environment
Infrastructure: The built environment includes various sector government defense in
constructor local authority education housing etc hair will be a discussion of mainly three
important sectors. Infrastructure is the most important sector of the built environment because
it plays a crucial role in the built environment. It is identified that the increasing demand for
public transport becomes a big challenge for the UK. To solve this challenge, the built
environment needs to work on infrastructure projects which are rail, motorways, and stations
airports. It becomes very difficult to maintain an environment with development. Now the
government also focuses on sustainable development so it becomes a big challenge for the
built environment (Beemer and et.,al., 2021). UK Government focuses on transportation and
infrastructure because they think health and safety are the priority of the public at all times in
that case provide in first structure as per according to the customer requirement. The health
care system is very challenging because the population is growing day by day and their
lifestyle is very lavish so every people is lazy.
Health: They are not thinking about their health so they require medical treatment the
construction industry focus on the resources on time the NHS plays an important role in the
healthcare department but now NHS facing various problems. The project is Cambridge to
hunting done improvement testing scheme major bypass to South of hunting done and
upgrade to a 14. Work started on November 2007 and the new road is open on the 5 May
2020 it is a large project which run by the UK. This project is made by the action industry for
people's welfare
Cambridge to Huntingdon Improvement Scheme is an important project that will
discuss in this report. It is the improved and maintained England motorways. Our vision is to
make root strategies for connecting and internationally. The construction industry is managed
and developed a strategic road network which is very important for every people who live in
the UK now they are easily going anywhere with this route and it gives health solutions also.
It means any vehicle is going anywhere. Government means is provide infrastructure
facilities to their people, in that case, they launch various schemes for the welfare of people
they make roads make hospitals for the welfare of peoples. Infrastructure is a very essential
part of any country (Liddicoat, Badcock and Killackey 2020). Country success depends on
infrastructure it gives luxury and maintains a standard of people. This Highway is giving

various opportunities to people some people are working and they go to another City so they
easily go anywhere because of this route.

One of the impressive engineering projects in East Anglia is Cambridge to Huntington
Improvement Scheme. It is the project of the infrastructure sector which is undertaken to
describe the benefits and challenges for them. It includes the upgradation of 21 miles of the
A14. It is the construction of new road networks and bridges that provides flexibility to the
people so that they can move from one place to another place very easily (Wieser and et.al.,
2021). It is identified that Cambridge to Huntington Improvement Scheme is found to be 750
m long via duct and also includes the rerouting of over 100 KM of utility cabling and pipes.
This project is a joint venture between Costain, Carillon, Balfour Beatty and Skanska. It is the
project of £1.5 billion Highway England that is due to be completed in 2020. It is expected
that once it is finished the upgraded a14 will increase the capacity. In addition to this, it also
cut the journey time for road users, boosts transport infrastructure and improves regional
connectivity in the UK.

This project is officially started in November 2016 and it was completed in 2020 the
new road opened to traffic on 5 May 2020. This project includes when important activities
such as it are the A14 trunk road between Huntington and Cambridge. It faces traffic
congestion and delays which becomes worst in the future. It is expected that approximately
85000 vehicles use this stretch. The government found to be announced the A14 Cambridge
to Huntington Improvement Scheme as a told option in July 2012 (An and et.al., 2019). They
also give a Fastrack delivery status in 2013 June. They make a public consultation which was
held between September and October 2013. They come to the conclusion that it should not be
tolled. After that, the highway agency of the United Kingdom begin to review the scheme.
They made a formal pre-application consultation between April and June 2014. Afterwards,
the DCO application which is known as a development consent order application submitted
in date 2014. It was accepted in January 2015 for the purpose of review and the decision of
the state secretary was announced in May 2016. It included many important activities such as
the widening of 3.5 m stretches between Alcon bury and Brampton. It is identified that one
important Huntington certain bypass is proposed that provides a two-lane dual carriageway

between the A1 at Brampton and Alington. It included a 12.5 mil bypass which will very
important because it provided a three-lane carriageway between Swavesey and Brampton.

In the class, we studied the project life cycle which is playing a very important role in
order to successfully managing a project from start to finish for project managers (Dixit and
et.al., 2021). It is identified that the Cambridge to Huntington Improvement Scheme is not a
small project as it is an important engineering project for the UK and a large project which is
necessary to manage effectively so that company will be able to achieve the set goal. In
addition to this, with the assistance of the project life cycle, the Cambridge to Huntington
Improvement Scheme was able to complete its project within the time limit. So the project
life cycle phases are mentioned below:
 The first stage is initiating which is found to be very important as it includes the two
important processes such as project charter and stakeholder register.
 The planning phase is the second stage where the project manager is focusing on

budget constraint in order to achieve their goal and objective. The Cambridge to

 It is very clear that this project comes under the highway agencies of the United
Kingdom and they are mainly responsible for the completion of this project. The first
form was the responsibility of the highway agency to analyse the road structure so
that they are able to get information about requirements. It is identified that the
highway agency is data survey and predicted that it will become very difficult for the
people to suffer on a road because it will get congested and found to be heavy traffic
congestion.
 One of the important responsibilities of the Highway agency is to ensure that they
should make a blueprint of the scheme so that they can discuss it with other

professional bodies of government for getting approval of this scheme. It was also an
important responsibility.
 The roles and responsibility of the Highway agency include the analysis of their
planning because if it was get failed then they will not able to make a project and it
resulted in a heavy loss (Yang and et.al., 2022). So it is the responsibility of the
highway agencies to analyse their plan in an effective before comes into the execution
phase.
 It is identified that one important responsibility of the highway agency is to be very
transparent in the project so that people are able to trust and the government was not
facing any losses. It was very important for the highway agency to ensure that the day
project will be delivered benefits to society and their people. They also need to make
enjoy that the project should not only provide a social benefit but also able to provide
an economic benefit. Without this, they definitely were not able to complete this
project.
 It is the responsibility of the highway agency that their project should be successfully
delivered within the time limit they set (Dixon and et.al., 2021). It becomes necessary
to make sure that the project is delivered in 2020 because they decided in the planning
stage and if they were not able then they will have to face many losses. But they
played up good responsibility and they make sure the completion of the project
successfully.
So these are important responsibility which was very well played by the government
and Highway agency of the United Kingdom. It is important to know that without this they
will not be able to complete their project on time and achieve the goals and objectives they
set.
4 social benefits that the project has brought to the local community
The Cambridge to Huntington Improvement Scheme provides many benefits to the
local community (Herrmann-Lunecke , Mora . and Vejares 2021). This is necessary to
understand what type of benefits are provided by the Improvement Scheme. So the four
important social benefits of the Cambridge to Huntington Improvement Scheme are
mentioned below to the local community:
 It is an award-winning scheme because it combats congestion. The local community
is able to get benefit from combating the congestion which is found to be necessary

for future survival. Every day the traffic congestion is increasing which results in
delays in delivery and transportation. But with the help of this scheme, the local
community is able to timely deliver and enjoy the reduced congestion on roads.
 It is also identified that the local community is able to get improved safety (Klinsky

customers which will result in increased trade because of reduced transportation time.
 It is very important to both the local economy as it reduces the transportation time that
increases the businesses of local organisations.
 With the help of this came the UK economy will be able to enhance its National
economic growth.
 It is able to improve the environment by de-trunking the existing route through
Huntington (Cheng and et.al., 2022). This will able to improve the air quality and
reduces the road traffic noises.

local economic growth.

From the above discussion, the project is related to the construction industry it is one
of the important activities for the business. The purpose of the project is to provide safety and
security to their people. There is various factor included in the built environment the project

manager needs to consider various factor first the factor is project is complete on the time.
There are different types of projects which are very important for the UK people. The
government takes initiative to decrease the problems and give solutions to their people for
this they create infrastructure which is a very important tool for the economy. It gives
strength and many other things. The construction industry is not based on the short term it is
based on the long term because many projects are made by the construction industry so that
peoples are like. The project is running in the Cambridge to Huntingdon improvement
scheme. The government provides a good infrastructure to increase sales in infrastructure.
The project is very wild it gives various benefits to their people. It goes to the local economy
or reduced time on the journey. This highway connects communities and improves the
environment. It creates a positive legacy which is required for the region The project is a very
essential part of the UK it gives a road transfer corridor between waste material and East
Angela it connects with local regional National international lines which give economic
growth. Infrastructure is the basic need of any country they make malls, schools, heritage.
