and the Hutu majority have raged the nation ever since its
independence in 1962.

Pierre Nkurunziza is the first democratically chosen president since
the 1994 civil war, and he is a former Hutu rebel leader (BBC, 2018a).
Burundi’s main economy relies on agriculture because of its
underdeveloped manufacturing sector. Burundi Franc (BIF) is the

Languages of Burundi
The official and national languages of Burundi are Kirundi
and French. Burundians also speak Swahili and English
(Embassy of Republic of Burundi, 2016).
Kirundi is a Bantu language that is spoken by the majority
of people living in Burundi. Burundi enjoys a linguistic
homogeneity that is rarely seen in Africa (Embassy of
Republic of Burundi, 2016).
