Insights into the ways in which culture influences communication
Various cultures have various ways in which their people communicate and exchange ideas.
These cultures often make communication difficult between two parties. Below explained are the
factors the lead to the communication barrier because of cultural issues.
Cultures are either low-context or high-context: Different cultures holds different ways to
communicate. Some cultures are based on personal bonds, and agreements which are informal
whereas others are far more binding than any formal contract. In some cultures, the meticulous
wordings or legal documents can be seen as paramount. In high context cultures such as Slav,
central European, Latin American, Asian etc. leave its messages much unspecified, which later
needs to be understood from context, between the line-interpretations of what is said etc.(Locker,
and Kienzler, 2000)
Cultures are either synchronic or sequential: There are cultures which thinks of time
sequentially or as a commodity which is linear to save, spend or waste. Other cultures in that
context view time synchronically like a kind of flow which can only be experience in a moment
and something which cannot be contained or controlled.(Maes and Icenogle, 1997)
Cultures are either neutral or effective: A reason and an emotion both play important role in
international business dealings. Whatever dominates is entirely depends upon whether we are
affective as readily showing our emotions or are emotionally neutral in our approaches.
