INTRODUCTION
This report reviews the population growth in New South Wales (NSW), the major contributing
factors to the growth in population, and the subsequent changes in the business environment.

NSW has the largest population in Australia and its capital city is Sydney with a population of
about 4.4 million people. New South Wales is situated in South-East Australia covering 10.4%
of Australia which is about 800,642 km2. The population of NSW is expected by the end of 2020
to reach 8.092 million.
POPULATION GROWTH IN NSW
The population of NSW has been increasing progressively between 2006 and 2016 as shown in
the figure below:

During the years 2006 and 2016, the population of NSW has been increasing as a consistent
growth rate ranging between 1.65% and 1.02%. This means that the NSW was adding between
120,000 and 80,000 people yearly to the overall population.

The major factors promoting the growth of the population of NSW between 2006 and 2016
include:
Workers Seeking Employment
The increased population growth rate of NSW is attributed to the movement of workers from
other parts of Australia to seek employment opportunities. During the period 2006 to 2016, new
industries such as financial services and information technology were greatly centered in Sydney
which encouraged young people to move to the city and look for employment. Additionally, the
Macquarie Park region of Sydney also attracted the headquarters of various firms in information
technology also was promising in terms of employment opportunities (Tam & Clarke, 2015).
This movement to seek employment in Sydney increased the population of Sydney making it the
most populated city with an approximated population of 4.4 million. The report from the NSW
Department of Home Affairs has indicated that the skilled migrants play a role in increasing the
