1BUSINESS PROCESS MANAGEMENT
Part A
1) Business Process Management
a) Benefits and Shortcomings of BPM vs BPR
Benefits of BPM: Business process management has benefits of having the processes
automatically and then reuses all those processes in the present system. The risk associated with
the Business Process is very low compared to BPR. The changes that takes place in modelling of
BPM continues and BPM includes the business and the IT collaboration in the existing system.
BPM has the advantage of working with more than one process simultaneously in the system and
this modelling is less expensive compared to Reengineering of Business Process.
There are more advantages that BPM serves compared to BPR. The modelling of BPM
has very high agility that gives respond to the threats or the opportunities associated with a
system. BPM is generally used in real time systems and the organizations can also capitalize on
feedback for developing the next product or the service or they might even upgrade the system in
the organization. Another advantage that BPM provides is transparency. Transparency in an
organization help in increasing the communication within it and helps in increasing the work
efficiency in the organisation. BPM eliminates all such wastes that are not needed by the
organization. Wastes includes the resources that are not used by the organization, or the activities
that are obsolete in the organization. This gives the best solutions in an organization that it needs
to proceed the business process and increase the development of the products.
Disadvantages of BPM: With all the advantages, the BPM also has some drawbacks. In
most of the BPM business, there is lack of communication in organization. In the management
process, there is a communication lack which slows down the process in the organization. This

also includes changes in the business processes, and the changes effects both the workers
involved in the company and the associated customers which is not the case in Reengineering
process.
Benefits of BPR: BPR helps to recreate all the process in the organization from starting.
BPR helps to start a process and this the risks that are associated with BPR implementation are
very high. The change in this particular process is not continuous and the change initiated with
BPR includes a big change and the change that is initiated is radical. The businesses in an
organization is not mandatory with the BPR implementation and there should be IT collaboration
in the organization. With BPR only one process is worked at a time and the modelling with BPR
is more advantageous.
There are more advantages that BPR provides in the business process. There are many
waste resources and activities that are not needed in the organization and those activities are
eliminated by BPR program. This helps to encourage all the input of the employees as well as the
participation of the workers along with the employees involved in a business process. The
program of BPR helps to lessen the cost of carrying the business process. All the steps that are
not required in the business process are removed by the BPR and complete a process in time. The
BPR includes advanced technology and that results in to save the money in an organization.
Disadvantages of BPR: As BPR includes advanced technology, the organization needs to
invest more money on the latest technologies and update the technologies from time to time that
needs more investment from the company. BPR cannot use outdated technologies. The errors in
the organization are reduced generally and helps in increasing efficiency of business process.
The business processes that are used by BPR are not used by all the organization. The workers in
all the organization might also not adapt the changes that happens because of implementing BPR

in the organization. The management team might also fails in assisting all workers in the
organization with the user of BPR.
b) The phases that discarded by BPR from the BPM phases are modelling phase,
monitoring phase as well as optimization phase. The approach of BPR does not include these
processes as it believes that those phases increases the working pressure on the employees of the
organization. All the processes are not particularly measured in BPR program and the processes
are not monitored in this particular program. The BPR maintains only three phases that includes
planning phase, designing phase, and implementation phase that allows the organization to
complete a business process.
c) Most of the organization follows management program that include BPR and the BPM
together for completing their business process. Both the Business Process Reengineering and the
Business Process Management helps to add value in the organization and implementing both the
programs in the organization helps to change all the previously maintained culture in the
organization and increases the profit percent of the organization.

3) Intermediate BPMN
3.1) The figure given has two processes in the given system. The inner project has the
sub-process and there is an outer process. The outer process shows the starting of the process and
the process inside it will run till 5pm and then the process will end. The sub process that is inside
the parent process is checking the new complaints that the customer gives for the process. The
complaints has exclusive functions that has two outcome. The process of customer complaint can
be responded or gets terminated after two hours. If the customer complaint is responded, the
process stops and if the customer respond is not responded, the complaint automatically ends
after two hours. This whole sub-process shows a catch event that shows message handling
capacity for the process and after the message is catch, the process is terminated. There is also an
error message that show a new process of handling the escalation procedure.

To know the working process of the system process, the process description is needed for
a BPMN diagram. The process will last up to 5 pm and the sub-process in the main process will
run in a loop till 5 p.m.
3.2)
Mistakes Specification of BPMN
1.
Application returned to applicant in the
diagram throws intermediate event that is not
the correct format.
According to the BPMN specification, there
should not be a catch event. Instead of
catching the event, it should be thrown to the
outside pool. The message in the Application
returned to applicant should be thrown out to
the student pool.
2. The exclusive gateway should have two
conditions that will states yes or no answer
for the concerned process.
As per the specification of BPMN, the
gateway in the diagram should have two
output condition.
3. The gateway showing exclusive path
should have label on it.
Label should be present on every exclusive
gateway in a BPMN diagram as per the
conventional specification.
4. There are two process Evaluating Credit
History as well as Joining check housing
which should be parallel with each other.
Both the processes should take part parallel.
There should be exclusive gateway in
between the processes.
5. Proper labels should not be marked in the In the exclusive gateway BPMN, there should

exclusive gateway marked in the diagram. be proper labels.
6. There is no labelling the lane part of the
diagram.
In the specification of BPMN, the labelling
should be done in the lane diagram. These are
present in the specification of BMPN 2.0
7. Labelling of exclusive gateway is not done
properly.
One of the important conventional ways of
drawing BPMN is labelling the gateways. The
gateway should be labelled properly.
8. The sequence flow in the rejection
application is to be extended to external pool.
Proper communication should be established
with external pool having message events in
the provided diagram.
9. The rejection application does not have
proper labelling in the BPMN diagram
provided. The condition is not satisfied in the
diagram shown.
Proper labelling should be done in exclusive
gateway with a yes or a no.
10. The data objects in the given diagram are
not labelled properly.
Labelling objects in the BPMN diagram
should be done in the diagram.
11. The event named as Updated Application
Received should have message inflow from
intermediate event.
There should be message inflow from pool
that is shown in the diagram.
12. The start event in the diagram and the end
event in the diagram is different in the given
diagram.
The diagram shows that there is a message
start and therefore it should have a message
end in the diagram.

13. The gateway in the evaluation sector is
not used properly in the diagram.
The processes as well as end denoting process
should have an end. The end event should be
connected in the diagram.
14. The Reject application in the diagram
should also have an end process and it is not
connected with any end process.
Every process in a BPMN diagram should
have end process that should be connected
with end event.
15. The message inflow from the Prepare
student housing form is wrong in the BPMN
diagram.
The data object should not have any message
inflow and outflow.
