1BUSINESS PROCESS MANAGEMENT
Part A
1) Business Process Management
a) Benefits and Shortcomings of BPM vs BPR
There are many benefits and shortcomings of Business Process Management as well as
Business Process Reengineering. The difference between BPM and BPR are stated below in the
table:
Business Process Management Business Process Reengineering
BPM model automates as well as reuses all
the processes in the existing system
Helps in recreating the processes from the
given scratch
The risk in BPM is very low This risk associated in BPR is very high
The change in the BPM model is continuous The change is not continuous, change that is
done in BPR is a big change and the change is
radical.
There must be business as well as IT
collaboration in the system
The business as well as IT collaboration is not
mandatory in BPR
More than one process are taken
simultaneously
One major process is worked at a time.
This is less expensive This is more expensive.

Advantages and disadvantages of BPM:
2BUSINESS PROCESS MANAGEMENT
Advantages: BPM has agility which states the ability to give respond to all the
opportunities or the threats in a real time system. BPM also helps the customers to get the
product quickly. This helps a business to go quick in a market. All organization can capitalize on
the feedback for next product or any upgrade they want. BPM also has transparency that states
the working procedure of the processes as also states how the product work in each step and how
the technology is used. Transparency helps to increase communication with the organization and
increases the efficiency of work. BPM has also the ability to eliminate all the waste resource as
well as helps in identifying the best solutions used for utilizing the fund of the products
development.
Disadvantages: The drawbacks that BPM has is sometimes the implementation of BPM
fails dues to communication lack in the organization. In this management process, changes
effects both the customers and the workers irrespective of BPR.
Advantages and disadvantages of BPR:
Advantages: BPR program mainly helps to identify the wastes in a business process. It
eliminates the steps, workers or the items from the business process that are not important. This
helps in encouraging the employee input as well as the participation along with the workers who
are associated with processes. BPR helps to reduce the cost of carrying out the business process
by cutting down all the unnecessary steps as well as the time required for completing a process.
Working with the advance technology, BPR helps to save money for the company.
Disadvantages: BPR mainly requires investment specifically in technology. The outdated
technologies cannot be used in BPR program. This helps to reduce the error and increase the
efficiency of the system. All the businesses cannot use the program of BPR as the processes

involved in BPR cannot be used by all the organizations. Another disadvantage that BPR can
make is all the workers cannot adapt the changes that happens due to BPR. There might also be
failure of management team in assisting the workers.
b) Phases of BPM discarded by BPR
Modeling, Monitoring as well as optimization are the three phases that are totally
eliminated from BPR. According to BPR, there is no particular one way to approach the
reengineering process. The three phases that is planning phase, design phase as well as
implementation phase are the three phases that are enough to carry out a process in a business.
The processes performed in BPR program are not monitored and the performance of the
processes are not measured in this particular program.
c) Combination of BPR and BPM
BPR as well as BPM are complimentary to each other while dealing with a process
instead of using it as a substitute. Both of them can contribute to value addition in an
organization. With the BPR, the vision as well as mission of the company is reconsidered as well
as redesigned. Combining both of them helps in changing the prevailing culture of the company.
