are of crucial importance in the present age. The employers hire employees on the basis of
their skills along with qualities so that they would be able to maintain a productive
workplace. This essay discusses about the business skills that are required for employers and
the strategies that the Universities can adopt to teach the skills to the undergraduate students.
It also discusses the areas where this skills could be employed.
Business Skills Required by Employers
Communication skills
Communication skills are of crucial importance for the employees and it helps them
in transmitting ideas either in oral form or by writing. Interpersonal skills can help them in
communicating with the clients and the suppliers. Good communication skills can help an
employee in getting hired, landing promotions and being successful in one’s career (Assiter
2017). It can help an employee in convincing a client about the merits of a product or
service.
Team work skills
Employers look for people who act as team players and can work well along with that
of other people. Employees who are not difficult to work with can prove to be an asset for a
company. Good skills related to team work can help in conflict management that helps an
individual in mediating problems between the different team members. The strong team
players will be willing to share the resources along with knowledge with that of other
employees. The collective approach in relation to co-working can help in strengthening the
players (Gresch and Janita 2017).
Occupation where these skills can be applied
The communication skills are crucial in the role of a manager of an organisation as
they have to co-ordinate important facts to the employees. Good communication skill helps
the managers in communication of plan of action that can help the employees in achieving
the goal. Team work proves to be greatly important in the arena of marketing and it helps
them in achieving their objectives (Martin, Richard and Lori 2014). Marketing requires the
communication between different marketing decisions and hence team work is very
important in this particular occupation (Storey 2016). It is the duty of those involved in

marketing to deliver the message to that of the public so that they can develop affinity with
the company.
Strategies that Universities can use to teach skills
The universities can teach communication skills to the students with the help of group
discussions. Group discussion in the class can help the students in becoming more confident
and they would learn how to interact properly with other members of the team. The current
system of education lays more emphasis on the theoretical aspects but practical knowledge
can prove to be of great use for the professional world (Huber and Nathan 2016). The
discussion on different kinds of topics can help them in gaining knowledge that can be of use
to them at the later stage of life. Speeches along with podcasts can be uploaded online which
the students can watch and understand the importance of tone along with body language. The
students can be asked to practice that of oral presentations in the class that can help them in
the field of mastering the communication skills (Hoffman and Steven 2018). Teachers can
teach teamwork skills to the students by making them practice different kinds of activities
that is independent of that of academic content. The teachers can create a rubric with the
students that can help them in guiding conversation (O'Sullivan and Kim 2017). The teachers
should be flexible with the rubric as new skills can be added from time to time. The teachers
in the universities can provide the students with different assignments along with projects.
Separate responsibility should be relegated to that of different members of the group that can
teach them how to effectively collaborate in a team (van Scheers and Johan 2014). The
university will thus be able to teach them regarding how to work in a team and be more
productive for the organization.

Interpersonal skills can be of great benefit for an employee for maintaining effective
communication with the clients and the supervisors. Team work can help an individual in the
process of conflict management. A manager needs good amount of communication skills so
that they can communicate significant facts. Team work is important in the field of marketing
as this occupation needs the co-ordination of different departments. Group discussion can be
made use of by the teachers at the universities that can help the students to evolve as
confident individuals. The teachers at the universities can provide the students with various
kinds of projects that will require the students to work in a co-operative manner. The
