CAREER EPISODE – 3
a) Introduction:
CE3.1
Name of the project work: Spider Robot with Wireless Cam and Wi-Fi Data
Communication
Dates: September of 2010 to February of 2011
Duration: 6 months
Location: Sahrdaya College of Engineering and Technology
Name of the organization: Sahrdaya College of Engineering and Technology
Position Title: Undergraduate Student
b) Background:
CE3.2 Nature of the overall engineering project
Robots are machines that have capability to carry out complex series of
different actions in an automated manner. They could be conducted by the
external control devices or this control might be surrounded in the machine.
They can either be semi-autonomous or could be autonomous in nature and are
formed from the humanoids like innovative mobility and playing robots. Robots
are becoming the most significant parts of modern technologies with new
pathways and greater leaps for ensuring better development and success. In
this project, I have developed critical technologies, which would enable the
implementation and designing of autonomous robot, so that it can climb vertical
natural terrain. A Spider robot is being developed for exploring a secluded
location after detecting the different area parameter such as distance,
temperature and light. I have made the robot in such a manner that it can
process the area parameters and then transmit the gathered data to manage
the stations with wireless mean. Moreover, it can even sense the various object
within its path after verification of the outputs from IR and change their path
accordingly. I have provided a compact design to the spider robot, so that it is
helpful in verification of atmospheric situations within any specific area without
human intervention. It would be extremely helpful for space expedition or
military.
CE3.3 Objective of the project
While making the project work, I kept in mind that the robots are able to
provide better solutions to the military world. To complete my work regarding
development of a spider robot, I had developed few objectives for the project,
which are as follows:
To provide a compact design for a spider robot for exploring remote
locations after sensing the area parameters such as distance, light,
temperature and many more.
To process and transmit data that is being collected from the parameters
to the control station.

To make the spider robot in such a manner that it can detect the
obstacles in its path after verification of IR output.
To ensure that the embedded system software is including sensors such
as temperature sensor, light sensor, distance sensor and many more to the respective
microcontroller.
To confirm the atmospheric situations without any kind of human intervention.
To establish a proper communication protocol for communications between control-
room and remote system.
To ensure that the experimental results are matching with the expected outcomes.
CE3.4 Nature of your particular work area
This project was a part of my curriculum of my bachelor’s final year work. The
subsequent project team comprised of 5 staff from electronics and
communication department. Out group was highly focused for implementation
of a solution that covers telecommunication like signal processing and military
and industrial application. Out entire concept was being approved by the
respective facility committee and my project supervisor provided maximum
support and motivation for completing the project within correct timeframe.
Being a student of electronics and communication engineering department, I
have not faced any type of complexity, while performing the project work. I
ensured that my experience and knowledge is providing maximum advantages
to this project and the outcomes are as per our expectations.

CE3.6 Statement of your duties
I had a couple of responsibilities while accomplishment of this particular project
work. I was in-charge of designing algorithms for proper robotic arm movements

and programming with the help of C++ language. This was extremely important for
the project since it provided a step wise representation of the solution to the
provided issue that makes it extremely easy to understand. Being an expert in
algorithm and C++ language, I was able to provide a definite process and the arm
movements were appropriate. I was even responsible for finding out the issues and
complexities that are being faced by other team members. Apart from the technical
aspect of the project work, my duties even included to prepare presentations for
project overview and even procurement of parts and materials for this project. I had
to ensure that every material is with us, before we start our work. Finally, I had to
present our project weekly reports to the project supervisor for ensuring him that
our project was in progress and it will get completed within deadline.
c) Personal Workplace Activity:
CE3.7 Technical details of the work
The project of Spider Robot with Wireless Cam and Wi-Fi Data Communication was
one of the major and the most significant projects in my electronics and
communication engineering career. The project was to develop a spider robot for
exploring remote locations after sensing the respective area parameters. I had
presented an immobilization-based control based methodologies for spider such as
robot, which move quasi static process within the tunnel environment. A spider
robot comprises of the core capability of moving quasistatically even in congested
environments. I checked that several robotic task is suitable for legged robot and
interrelate properly for the achievement of stable locomotion. It helps in providing
surveillance of collapsed structures, inspecting as well as testing of the most
complicated pipe system and even maintaining any type of hazardous structure like
nuclear reactor. I wanted to provide better effectiveness and efficiency in the
existing technology of robots. Remote device follows the input from the controller
and shared continuous control.
I made the spider robot in such a manner that it comprises of the major benefit over
the wheeled robot, just similar to the fact that it can possess grip on different
surface types if it belongs to the mountainous or sandy type for firmly fixing it as the
robot has 6 legs. The monitoring sections were occupied with a wireless camera as
well as specialized sensors. This robot has a specific mechanical structure, which
comprises of servo motor for robotic movement and electronic circuitries that acted
as robot CPU. I made an algorithm for controlling robot movements, sensing of
ambient parameter and detection of obstacles or object with proper capturing of
images. I fixed the robot with several sensors for monitoring atmospheric
temperature, pressure, relative humidity and light intensity. An ultrasonic sensor
module was also used by me to detect the object or obstacle on time.
CE3.8 How you applied your engineering knowledge and skills;
I have used my electronics engineering skills or knowledge for making this
project a successful one. The first and the foremost skill and knowledge used
for this particular project work was C++ programming and data structures. I
was successful in providing an appropriate algorithm for the robotic arm
movement. My other significant engineering knowledge and skills involved logic
designing and microcontrollers. It helped me in designing the entire spider
