Hand hygiene is one of the ways that is crucial in breaking the chain infection in health
care facilities. All healthcare professionals need to have enough knowledge of the significance of
hand hygiene. They need to ensure they follow the tips for hand hygiene before contacting every
patient. In normal cases, bacteria stay on the body and in the surroundings of an infected patient.
In this case, hand wash with soap kills the bacteria from the hands of the infected individual,
thereby breaking the infection cycle (Bloomfield et al, 2012).
In this case scenario, the health care specialist must ensure they perform hand hygiene
after every period of providing care to Mary and John. Besides, they must ensure they encourage
the two patients to do hand hygiene after they touch their body. Thus there is the need for all
healthcare practitioners and patients to focus on hand hygiene as the action plays a critical part in
breaking the chain of infection in health care facilities (Mutaz et al., 2016).

Microorganism causing diseases are present in health care surrounding and can affect the
patients by contact. As results, health specialists need to maintain a clean environment that can
prevent chain infection. For effective breakage of the chain of infection, the contaminated patient
areas such as handrail or bed rails need to be cleaned with warm water together with powerful
detergents (Bloomfield et al, 2012). Besides, there is a need for the usage of personal protective
equipment when providing care to an infected patient. In the provided case, health care staff
needs to clean and sanitize all the areas utilized by Mary and John. Besides, there should be
proper training and documentation on areas that need to be cleaned and with which detergent.
