ABSTRACT
At the moment, Individuals from culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) background living
Australia experience a lot of challenges in accessing health and social services which result from
high illiteracy level, language barrier and high population growth rate (Agu, Lobo, Crawford &
Chigwada, 2016). The challenges can solved by ensuring that the CALD community have access
to education, the language for offering services is well understood through interpretation and
translation. Population growth can effectively be checked by use of family planning methods
which may include the use of contraceptives and use of condoms to control pregnancy. The
government can also chip in by enacting policies to control the population growth rate.

1. Introduction
Statistics of people show that the population within Australia is covered mostly immigrants from
different countries. These immigrants speak different languages and have diverse cultural
background. The increased immigrant population led to formation of the CALD. The CALD face
a lot of challenges in accessing both health and social services due to their background. Major
challenges in admission services include language barrier, high population growth rate and
immense illiteracy within the community. ( Hudson ,2014) The highlighted best solutions to the
problems are interpretation and translation of the languages, family planning methods and set up
of learning institutions and promotion of education respectively.
2. Findings
2.1. Problems faced by CALD
Some of the major challenges being experienced by the CALD community living in Australia are
Low health literacy, Language barrier and Rapid population growth. Most of the people within
the CALD community have little knowledge of health services. They don’t know when to access
medical services or the type of diseases affecting them. (Posselt, McDonald, Procter, De
Crespigny & Galletly, 2017). Most of them end up suffering in the long run for failure to adhere
to prescription given by physicians. They also fear and fail to go to medical centers and hospitals
leading to most of them suffering which can be also fatal.
Language barrier is another major challenge. Most of the services in Australia are done in
English language. Most of the CALD community come from regions where English is rarely or
not spoken at all. It becomes hard for them to communicate to individuals offering the medical

and social services since they have to converse in a language known to them which mostly is the
English language.
The unmatched population growth within the CALD community form another major barrier
where the services offered cannot meet the ever-growing population. The immigrants’
community within Australia form a bigger part population within the country. Some service
centers require a fixed number of people; an example is the number of beds within a hospital. If
number of patients becomes more than the beds then it becomes hard to offer medical services to
the individuals.
2.2. Possible Solutions
There exists solutions to problems that face humanity. They can either be at an individual level
or at a communal level. Some of the answers to the problems listed above may include the
following. Firstly, the setup of new learning institutions and provision of free education to the
CALD community can help to boost the literacy level within the community.( Roderick &
Stowell,2017) It will provide a community which is well en-lighted with knowledge and skills.
Eventually elites graduating from the learning institutions solve most of the problems.
Language barrier can be solved by incorporating translation and interpretation services.
Most of the gadgets including phones and computers can be set to have many languages as
default languages. It enables people from different backgrounds to access phone services and
many other services using their own native languages. System or human translators can help a lot
to breakdown the language barrier. The translators helps convert one language to another, which
is convenient to an individual. (Ali & Watson, 2018).

Population growth rate can be checked to using the family planning methods. It would include
the use of medication as advised by the physician to control pregnancy. The use of
contraceptives can also help to curb emergency pregnancies. Promotion of use of condoms
within the communities helps to prevent pregnancies. The government should put policy on
maximum number of kids to be within a particular household. It would ensure that the
government is able to provide free education to the CALD population.
3. Discussion
The immigrant communities within Australia experience a lot of challenges due to their cultural
and linguistic background (Truong, Gibbs, Paradies & Priest, 2017). They experience these many
challenges since they were not born initially in that country. The refugees within Australia are
many, with different languages. Their diverse languages makes it hard to access both health and
social services since the common language, English is not corporate to them. Services written
and offered in English it becomes hard for them to access and it is only through interpretation
and translation of these services to their native languages, which can help them. Most of the
population of the CALD lack education. It hinders them to have skill and knowledge to do tasks.
It leads to many to have wrong interpretation of health and social services due to their education
level. By promotion of education within the CALD community by building of schools and
institutions helps to create a learned population (Baker, Irwin, Freeman, Nance & Coleman,
2018). Immense population growth within the CALD community makes it hard to provide
services to all individuals. Only by controlling population growth within CALD community
through family planning that you can offer adequate health and social services to them.

4. Conclusion
There is an increasing number of CALD community in Australia. Many challenges are facing the
CALD community including inadequate health and social services. Only by finding suitable
solution to this problems you can help this marginalized community.( Gilani & Furler,2014) The
main solution to the problems facing this challenges can be provision of good education,
interpretation and translation systems and Family planning can help a lot to ensure adequate
health and social services to the CALD.
5. Recommendation
 Set up of learning institutions to promote education for CALD
 Ensuring that family planning is observed
 Promotion of use of Interpretation and translation machines and systems
 Enacting policies to regulate population growth by the government.
