CHANGING GLOBAL MEDIA LANDSCAPE

Introduction
The presentation is about the changing global
media landscape and its international impact in
the 21st century. It will include first, an
introduction to the term ‘global media’ because
without understanding what constitutes the
global media, we cannot understand its
changing landscape or its impact.

Global Media
The term ‘global media’ is used in the 21st
century to refer to the innumerable media
agencies around the globe.
However, this is the traditional definition of thie
term as global media now is defined as the
media that involves the digital platform.
By digital platform, it means the social media
platforms, the various applications that are used
to communicate with others and disseminate
information.

Media in the past
The media that dominated the scene in the past mostly included
print media.
In this regard, we owe a lot to Johannes Gutenberg, the man
responsible for starting the ‘printing revolution’ in Europe during
the mid-15th century.
This allowed people to pass on information more easily, as
compared to when people had to walk miles to pass or receive
information.
Gutenberg’s invention of the movable type led to the instant
popularity of the print medium, which still has not lost its
significance in some countries.

Television and Radio
After print came the television and
radio. While radio provided audio
information to people, television did
both – audio and visual.
It was thus evident that television
and radio would soon dominate the
global media scene.
While print media was restricted to
national and local boundaries, radio
and television transcended these
boundaries.
People had the opportunity to learn
about the events happening in other
countries without having to be there
