INTRODUCTION
Management plays important role in every organisation which signify roles and
responsibilities for each members at workplace. In this context, operation management is
concern with conversation of raw material into finished goods (Helleno, Pimentel and Simon,
2015). It is essential to enhances efficiency and ability for developing organisation resources to
deliver goods and services. Present research is based on Metcalfe's food company Ltd. which is
operating its functions in different parts of the world.
For gaining insight knowledge of the organisation, present report defines and compares
different roles and characteristic of the leader as well as manager of the firm. Furthermore, report
applies theories and models of leadership approaches which include different types of systems.
Moreover, it analyses and differentiates between role of a leader and functions of manager with
different theories. In addition to this, report explains key approaches to operation management
that essentially play by manager and leader.
TASK 1
(a) Define and compare the different roles and characteristic of leader and manager
Leaders and managers plays important role within the business to achieve their goals and
targets. Leaders motivate employees to attain each and every activity in an effective manner. On
the other hand, manager of the company focuses on effective results by managing every business
process to attain profits at the workplace (Ming, Kun and Daoxin, 2013). Managers are the only
person who can control loopholes within the business environment. In Metcalfe's, leaders and
managers has difference to operating their functions. They are as follows:

Leadership and management both are important elements to earn profit in Metcalfe's.
They both take decisions regarding business goals and objectives in a systematic manner. The
cited firm is a food business and it is privately owned. In food products, customers are ready to
pay amount which are charged by the company. Thus, manager needs to keep high standards in
their products and services which they deliver to their customers. In different situation, they play
different role in to determine business activity and action. Management techniques and leaders
responsibilities differ from each other (Helleno, Pimentel and Simon, 2015). Following example,
the company can includes actions and activity within the firm to determine roles and
responsibilities of manager and leaders respectively:
With the help of internal structure of Metcalfe's, employees of the firm make products
for their customers. They serve in an effective manner so that the enterprise can make
the customer loyal towards the business (Ming, Kun and Daoxin, 2013). Each and every
employee make schedule to complete targets of the company. On the other hand,

profitability at the workplace.
In addition to this, in crises situation, employees are also discouraged by the magnitude
of problem. In this condition, they do not work effectively which creates negative impact

Metcalfe's leaders are takes position to develop effective environment at the workplace.
They motivate and encourage their employees to attain business objectives.
At Each level, leaders are required to working effectively within the business
environment. On the other hand, manager is responsible to manage staff at the
workplace. They have to take strict action towards business to manage staff within the
enterprise (Cooper, Dowsett and Rogers, 2013). Manager is responsible to recruit skilled
person within the enterprise to manage profitability.
Roles of manager
Planning: Manager of Metcalfe's possess role to make plan for operating functions
within the enterprise. In respect to this, they are set objectives and goals through
planning. For example, if the company want to launch new products, they have to make
strategy and time-frame to accomplish it.
Organizing: Another function of manager is organizing, in this aspect they are frame
plan to determine goals. Hence, they are take strategy for achieve objectives at
workplace.
Leading: To attain business objectives, every manager lead with operations for utilizing
optimum resources. In this aspect, Metcalfe's can easily launch their products in market
and target to people through utilizing resources.
Controlling: For achieving the best results, manager demonstrate control to each and
every activity which assist to deliver positive results and outcomes.
Role of leader
Monitor: Leader is playing very important role to monitor business performances and set
target to business outcomes. In respect to this, business goals can be achieve through
asses performances.
