Cultural diversityCultural diversity can be defined as the variety of multiculturalism of a group or an organisation. This can include various types of social structures, strategies and belief systems that a culture uses for adapting to the life situations in many parts of the world. The variations in the race, ethnicity, language, religion, value system or the local cultures that make up various groups in a community also accounts for a diversified workplace. Cultural safety is best applied in the field of health care as people from diversified cultural backgrounds try to get access to health care. In most of the cases these people face inequalities in terms of access to health care. Hence a culturally safe care is required to ensure equalities. Example: Active listening and showing respect to all the patients irrespective of their culture is an essential step towards the provision of a culturally safe care. Stereotype A stereotype can be defined as a generalised belief that many people have regarding a thing or a group based upon their appearance. In most of the cases, these generalised beliefs are wrong and can arise due to a number of reasons. Some of the common stereotypes are related to mental health, ethnic minorities, and gender and LGBTQ people. Stereotyping aboriginal people or aboriginal health care workers is commo and is mainly done by the non-aboriginal co-workers or even some non-aboriginal health care professionals. These stereotyping gives rise to prejudices and racial discrimination against the aboriginals that deprives them from getting equal opportunities in terms of basic human rights. Example: In a health care setting a non- aboriginal nurse can bear stereotypes about the aboriginal people that will not only hamper his / her care delivery to the patients and will also demean his/ her professional standards for not abiding by the nursing codes of conduct which discourages all kinds of discrimination. 2

Cultural awareness Cultural awareness can be defined as the recognition or the understanding of other cultures and beliefs, by being respectful to otherculturesandacceptingother's opinion, feelings and rights. It is the cultural awareness that is the primary element of communication while communicating with people from different cultural or linguistic background. Traditional healing rituals and the use of the bush medicines are the cultural practices of the aboriginals. A nurse can be culturally aware of the practices and can take help of the traditional healers in developing a care plan for a palliative care aboriginal patient, to whom spiritual care can be provided with the help of the traditional healers. Example: Cultural awareness of the mangers ensure review of the organisational policies, such that their basic human rights are preserved. Cultural safety Culturalsafetycanbedefinedasan environmentthatissafeforthe vulnerablegrouppeople,suchasthe aboriginals, an environment where there is no challenge, assault and people leave with harmony and peace.
