Case Study
Please read through the following case studies. Reflect on your learning and
your own research within this unit.
Prepare a response that responds to each of the issues presented below. Your
responses must reflect your knowledge, skills, and application for this unit.
1. You have been asked to prepare the cots in the cot room for the day. You
have 4 babies attending today and are required to set up the each cot. List
4 items you would check while preparing this?
Four of the items for preparing cots would be-
Firm and cozy waterproof mattress.
Cribs need to be babyproof.
Cushioned pillows and dry sheets.
Soothing colors and addition of mobiles playing relaxing music.
2. It is 9 am nappy time and you have been asked to change the nappies.
What steps should you take to ensure you change the nappies in a safe
and hygienic way for all involved? List a minimum of 8 steps.
The eight steps to change nappies in a safe and hygienic way includes the

following:
Wash hands with soap or alcohol rub
Place a paper on the change table
Wear disposable hand gloves on both hands
Remove the child’s nappy and dispose in a lidded bin
Clean the child’s bottom and remove the paper
Remove the gloves and put them in the bin
Place a clean nappy and dress the child
Remove the child from the change table and wash one’s hand and child’s
hand1
3. Referring to the question above. What step could you include if a child has
shown an interest in toilet training and the parents have advised you can
encourage this to see how the cope?
The steps that can be added if a child shows interest in toilet training are
as follows:
Help the child use the toilet
After the child use the potty, help to empty the contents into the toilet and
wash the chair with detergents
Children particularly girls should be taught to wipe from front to back to
minimize infection of urinary tract with bowel bacteria.
Help the child to wash their hands after toileting

Teach and explain the child why washing the hand is important after toileting
Make sure to wash one’s own hand after using the toilet2
4. You have been asked to prepare and heat a formula bottle for a baby’s
10am feed. What steps do you take too safely and hygienically prepare the
feed for the baby?
The following are the steps for safely and hygienically preparing the feed for the
baby:
While preparing a bottle, it is necessary to wash hands first and ensure that
work surface and other equipments are clean. The food contact surface like
benchtops should be washed and dried with a towel. All the equipments and
utensils should be washed and sterilized. While removing bottles, sterilized
tongs should be used to prevent recontamination. This will prevent any
possible of contamination during the preparation.
It is necessary to follow manufacturer’s instruction regarding cleaning
bottles and other equipments
While heating bottle, the following steps should be followed:
The bottle should be allowed to stand in hot water for more than 15 minutes
It is necessary to check the temperature of the milk by putting a little drop
onto the wrist before feeding to the child
The breast milk should not be microwaved
Thawed breast milk should never be refreeze
The warm milk should be used once only and the left milk should be
